Com-Cputer conferencing is a proven, computer supported, electronic mes-Fsaging technology that lets users participate in open discussions withFpeople in different locations and at different times. Compaq Notes forCOpenVMS Alpha helps save travel time and money because participantsDcan join in a discussion from their own desks at a time of their ownchoice.DCompaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha can be used for a variety of applica-Ftions such as an electronic bulletin board, collaborative document au-Cthoring and review, and internal classes or seminars. One major ad-Fvantage of Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha is that the conference main-Itains a detailed record of the proceedings of a discussion. These recordsDcan later be searched by a variety of criteria, such as name of par-Cticipant, subject, or keyword. Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha elim-Dinates reinvention of the wheel by providing a mechanism for sharingDexpert knowledge across the enterprise. In general, Compaq Notes forCOpenVMS Alpha enhances the communications flow across the corporate
hierarchy.DCompaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha is implemented as a client/server ap-Dplication. The Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha clients can run in oneEof two ways. Users can be on either the DECwindows platform with easyFaccess to functions through direct manipulation with a mouse in a win-Gdow, or the character cell terminal using a TPU interface. Compaq NotesC July 1999 Gfor OpenVMS Alpha servers run on OpenVMS systems in either a standaloneor networked environment.FThe Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha Full-function option allows the useFof all the features described below. The one exception is the PersonalCUse license that allows all of the features below except for accessEfrom remote clients. The Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha Client optionEallows all of the features described below with the exception of cre-Fation of conferences. The Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha for TeamLinksFoption allows Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha server features to be ac-cessed by TeamLinks PC Clients.FeaturesDistributed AccessCCompaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha has been designed for optimal multi-Enode access in a DECnet or TCP/IP network, using server technology toHachieve rapid response - even from distant nodes. Compaq Notes for Open-CVMS Alpha conferences can exist on any Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Al-Cpha or VAX server node in a DECnet or TCP/IP network and can be ac-Ccessed from any Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha client, Comapq NotesEfor OpenVMS VAX client, Conferencing for Windows client or Conferenc-Cing for Macintosh client in a DECnet or TCP/IP network, thus offer-Fing true distributed processing capability. Users on remote nodes needFnot have an account on the node where the conference is located in or-Fder to participate in a discussion. Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha canFalso be used on any single node OpenVMS configuration. Conferences canDexist on any node where the full function server is installed in ei-*ther standalone or networked environments.Moderator SupportCA moderator is a person responsible for managing a conference. Com-Gpaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha allows both public and private conferences.DFor private conferences, the moderator can restrict access to a spe-Dcific group of participants by specifying name and network location.DPublic conferences have no restrictions on who may participate. Mod-Ferators can send announcements of new conferences to participants, and" 2 Dhave the ability to delete notes entered by other participants. Mod-Gerators can also create special notices that are displayed for all par-/ticipants each time the conference is accessed.Ease of UseFCompaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha is designed with the inexperienced userDin mind. All functions can be accessed by easy-to-use commands, sup-Fported with on-line, context-sensitive help. Documentation is designedDto familiarize new users with Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha quicklyand easily.Choice of Editor InterfacesCThe character-cell interface to Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha pro-Evides three separate screen-oriented user interfaces for editing, al-Glowing users to specify use of EVE (an extensible interface), EDT-styleKkeypad interface, or WPS-style GOLD KEY keypad interface on ANSI-compatible
terminals.CA line mode editor also is included in Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Al-)pha for use on non-ANSI terminal devices.EUsers of the DECwindows interface can enter notes that contain graph-Fics and text by including entire compound documents based on DDIF fileformat.Topics and RepliesDThe structure of a Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha conference is sim-Dply a topic followed by replies to that topic, so there is no diffi-Gcult hierarchy to navigate. A conference may have more than 50,000 top-Cics, and each topic may have a similar number of replies. DirectoryJlistings show all topics by author, title, date, and the number of repliesEposted to each topic. All notes can be read either sequentially or atDrandom. Also, users may read only those notes that they have not yetGseen. Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha allows the user to search for var-Eious topics and replies using the SEARCH, DIRECTORY, and KEYWORD com-mands." 3 GThe DECwindows interface to Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha allows usersDto open multiple read windows per conference, as well as have multi-!ple conferences open at one time.NotebookHThe Notebook is a user's personal list of conferences of interest. UsersCcan easily add or delete conferences from their Notebook. The Note-Dbook allows users to define personal names for conferences and, in aGdistributed environment, allows remote conferences to be accessed with-Fout DECnet or TCP/IP node specifications. The Notebook contains an es-Dtimate of the number of notes the user has not yet seen. When a con-Eference is accessed, the Notebook determines whether or not new notesDhave been made since the last time the user accessed the conference.DThe Notebook also maintains a profile of user preferences, including@personal name, editor choice, and default printer specification.MarkersCMarkers are user-defined names pointing to relevant notes in a con-Dference. Markers can be used whenever a user needs to have a specialEreminder of things to do, or to recall notes that are frequently ref-erenced.KeywordsEKeywords allow the user to group notes that are concerned with a par-Cticular subject or do not have other attributes (such as title, au-Cthor, or time of entry) in common. Keywords are useful for groupingGnotes that may not have the keyword in the note text or title, but that.do address the subject the keyword represents.
Imported TextECompaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha allows notes and replies to be createdDoutside of Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha (using any editor that canGproduce ASCII or DDIF output files) and then later imported to the con-ference.Mail Integration" 4 GCompaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha uses the OpenVMS mail facility (includedEin the OpenVMS Operating System) to allow users to send notes or mes-@sages to other users from within Compaq Notes for OpenVMS Alpha.DEClinks - formerly LinkWorksHDEClinks allows the user to create links between notes in a Compaq NotesEfor OpenVMS Alpha conference as well as links between notes and otherFapplications that support DEClinks, such as the OpenVMS Alpha mail fa-Dcility. DEClinks is useful in establishing links between elements inCdifferent databases and also allows easy navigation along the paths Iestablished by the links. For more information regarding DEClinks, pleasepFrefer to the DECwindows Motif for (OpenVMS Alpha) Software Product De-scription (SPD 36.09.xx).iHARDWARE REQUIREMENTScProcessors SupportedEAny Alpha system that is capable of running OpenVMS Alpha Version 1.0p- 7.1.0Disk Space Requirements (Block Cluster Size = 1)*Disk space required for 11,000 blocks

Less memory may be re-fGquired on the client system (the system where the software is installedtCand executed) if the server (the component that displays the appli-pCcation) resides on another system. More memory may be required on asEsystem with several applications running or where it may be desirablee-to improve the performance of an application.nEThe minimum memory supported is 12 MB. However, the use of this soft-iEware in conjunction with increased memory capability improves perfor-rCmance. The memory size suggested for most typical hardware configu- rations is at least 16 MB.CLUSTER ENVIRONMENTCThis layered product is fully supported when installed on any validlEand licensed OpenVMS Cluster* configuration without restrictions.
