DECpage, Version 3.1 SPD 26.29.09

DESCRIPTION

DECpage is a style controlled batch formatter offered as a VMS layered
product. DECpage is available as an option to WPS-PLUS/VMS and ALL-IN-1.

Using WPS-PLUS documents for input, DECpage produces high-quality text, or
high-quality integrated text and graphics output to Digital Equipment
Corporation's laser printers.

DECpage uses normal, italic, and bold fonts in a variety of proportionally
spaced typefaces in several character sizes. DECpage produces most types
of standard office documents, including:

oo Memos
oo Reports
oo Business letters
oo Directories
oo Announcements
oo Newsletters
oo Overhead Transparencies

DECpage formats an entire document, with or without graphics, by performing
automatic typeface selection, line justification, and pagination based on
the user's selection of any of the 41 professionally designed print styles,
or styles created by the user.

Features

oo WPS-PLUS Integration - DECpage is an option to WPS-PLUS/VMS and
ALL-IN-1. DECpage appears on the WPS-PLUS Document Processing Menu and
document selections can be made directly from the DECpage menu.

oo Graphics Support - Users can incorporate PostScript (R), Sixel,
ReGIS, or GKS files into their output document by specifying a size (small,
large, and landscape), a caption if desired, and the name of the
graphic file to be included in the final output. DECpage locates the
graphic file and positions it in place or, if necessary, floats it to
the top or bottom of the current, facing or following page.

DECpage supports PostScript graphics created using the Adobe
Illustration (TM) package, ReGIS and Sixel graphics by mean of
translation software, and GKS graphics. Note: DECpage only supports
GKS on PostScript printers (ScriptPrinter, PrintServer 20, PrintServer
    40, PrintServer 40 Plus).

Sixel files must conform to the Sixel graphics extension of the Video
Systems Reference Manual (DEC-Standard 070). An LN03 or LN03 PLUS
laser printer is required for Sixel graphics support.

Although an LN03 can handle simple business graphics, it is recommended
that an LN03 PLUS be used for maximum results.

oo Clip Art - Users can insert directly into their DECpage document any
one of ninety-nine PostScript graphic files. These PostScript files
were created by Studio Advertising Art and are known as Studio's Click
and Clip library. This artwork contains a wide variety of art ranging
from baseball caps to portraits of George Washington.

oo Logo Support - 26 PostScript logos can be accessed using the expanded
dead key sequences. These logos allow the user to create a boarder
effect for both landscape and portrait output. Users can also include
watermark text to appear on each of the printed pages, for example,
CONFIDENTIAL, TOP SECRET, PRIORITY, and DRAFT.

oo User Designed Styles - Provides the user with the ability to copy any
of the provided 41 DECpage styles and then modify the following
    document attributes:

    - Page width and depth
    - Placement of top and left margins
    - Location of crop marks
    - Block width and depth
    - Minimum and maximum block depths
    - Trim margins
    - Logo width and depth
    - Typefaces
    - Space above and below elements
    - Point size
    - Line depth
    - Paragraph indents
    - Paragraph numbering
    - Left margin indents
    - Line width
    - Automatic label text
    - Graphic dimensions
    - Super/subscript characteristics
    - Optional page numbering
    - End notes
    - Optional hyphenation
    - Appendix text
    - Column headings
    - Rendition selection
    - Footnote characteristics
    - Literal text characteristics
    - Landscape text characteristics
    - PrintServer 40 bin and tray selection
    - PrintServer 20 bin and tray selection

Once the desired modifications have been made, users can test and build
    their own style.

oo DECstandard 169 Support - Complete support for DECstandard coded
graphic character sets for hardware and software.

oo International Scope

    - Paper Sizes - DECpage is designed to format and print documents on
either ISO paper sizes (A4/A5) or American paper sizes
(7x9/8.5x11). At installation time, the option is offered to load
the corresponding style files on the system.

    - Multi-national Character Set - In addition to the ASCII,
Technical, and Line Drawing character sets, DECpage supports the
Multi-national Character Set (MCS), providing the characters
needed by various European languages (accented vowels, combination
         characters, and so forth).

    - Multiple Language Hyphenation - Provides separate hyphenation
procedures for American-English, British-English, Danish, Dutch,
Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish
and Swedish. Through the use of WPS-PLUS print control blocks, it
is possible to change the hyphenation procedures within a
document. This enables the printing of documents containing
         multiple languages.

    - Multiple Language Environment - Subject to availability of
secondary language variants, DECpage can be installed in a
multiple language environment (WPS-PLUS/VMS or ALL-IN-1) and can
support multiple language operations on a single system.

oo 1/2 Line Spacing - Supports half-line spacing in literal or landscape
mode using the standard WPS-PLUS user interface.

oo Table of Contents, Figures, Tables, Illustrations, Examples -
Automatically creates a table of contents within a specified report
style, as well as an automatic list of figures, tables, illustrations,
    and examples.

oo Table of Authorities (Citations) - Provides the ability to compile an
automatic table of authorities (citations) within a specified report
    style.

oo Indexing - Provides automatic indexing within a specified report style
using index markup and specifying an automatic index section.

oo Master Document - Provides the ability to create a master document that
combines a list of documents, in the order in which they are to
appear, into a single output document.

oo Appendix - Provides support of an automatically page numbered appendix
    section within a report style.

oo Section Number - Provides the ability to set the section (or chapter)
number for the page numbering in a document.

oo Document Preview - Provides the option of ``previewing'' the document
on a VT1XX, VT2XX or VT3XX terminal screen. Prior to printing the
document, users will be able to see heading positions, line endings,
white space indicating graphic positions, and page breaks. Previewing
is available for the following output devices: LN03, LN03 PLUS,
ScriptPrinter, PrintServer 20, PrintServer 40 and PrintServer 40 Plus.
DECpage saves the preview file, which can then be printed directly to
    an output device.

oo Wrapping Columns - Provides the ability to output wrapped justified
text within the columns of a table.

oo Table Column Headings and Continuation - Provides support for
continuing table column headings when a table breaks over a page
    boundary.

oo Print Style Library - The print style determines the appearance of the
final document. Designed by graphic artists, the print styles combine
font selection with professional document design.

DECpage allows a single WPS-PLUS document to be printed in a variety of
styles. A report, for example, can be printed in either block style or
two-column style with no revision to the input document.

oo PrintServer 20 Duplex Support - DECpage supports the duplex printing
feature of the PrintServer 20. Once customized by means of the Device
to Queue menu option, users will have the capability of selecting any
of the two sided styles which are shipped as part of the product to
    produce two sided output.

oo Attached Printer Support - Users can format their documents and print
them directly on LN03, LN03 PLUS and LN03R printers which are directly
connected to their terminal printer ports.

if printing to a ScriptPrinter, PrintServer 20, PrintServer 40, or
    PrintServer 40 Plus.

Note: When printing to the ScriptPrinter, PrintServer 20,
PrintServer 40, or PrintServer 40 Plus Helvetica, will
replace Triumvirate and Lubalin will replace Stymie.

oo Font Packages

Font packages are required when printing to an LN03 and/or LN03 PLUS.
The LN03 Basic or Complete Office Font Packages are specially-designed
font packages for use with DECpage and are available from Digital. Each
package is designed to coordinate with the DECpage print styles,
therefore, other fonts are not compatible with DECpage.

A font package is not required when printing to either the
ScriptPrinter, PrintServer 20, PrintServer 40, or PrintServer 40 Plus.

oo Keying Conventions

    - Documents printed with DECpage must be keyed according to the
         DECpage keying conventions.

    - Users familiar with Digital word processing will easily adapt to
the required DECpage keying conventions. DECpage uses returns,
rulers, tabs, underlining, and bolding to identify document
elements such as headings (up to four levels), paragraphs, lists,
         notes, and so forth.

    - Users can also utilize the WPS-PLUS markup for paragraph
numbering, headings, indexing, and table of authorities. DECpage
does not support tailorable markup characters. The markup
characters supported are the left and right brackets.

    - Users can specify alphabetic, numeric, or special character
superscripts and subscripts anywhere in a document.

oo The Formatting Facility

The Formatting Facility performs the following functions:

    - Vertical and horizontal text justification. DECpage determines
how much text to place on each line and how to position the total
number of lines on the page.

    - Hyphenation - DECpage uses logical hyphenation rules and supports
the WPS-PLUS invisible hyphen in making hyphenation decisions.
DECpage also uses exception word lists provided by Houghton
Mifflin Company for the American, British-English and German
         languages.

    - Pagination - DECpage tries to prevent separation of a heading from
associated text as well as single line breaks at the end and
beginning of a page (widows and orphans).

Components

oo User Interface - Provides a set of menus, forms and procedures to
manage the formatting and printing functions.

oo Translator - Translates the word processing formatting information
(rulers, tabs, returns) into an internal file used by the formatting
facility containing document element identifiers (DEI) for each text
    element in the document.

oo The Formatting Facility - Performs automatic hyphenation, horizontal
and vertical text justification, pagination and font loading
    instructions.

oo Print Style Library - Contains the individual print styles used by the
    formatting facility.

oo The Print Facility - Prints the formatted output file to the LN03,
LN03 PLUS, ScriptPrinter, PrintServer 20, PrintServer 40, and
    PrintServer 40 Plus laser printers.

oo User Designed Styles Facility - Allows for modifying and/or copying of
the 41 provided styles. These copies are then modifiable by the user,
    creating customized styles.
