Usage Scenarios

The OpenVMS CMS Support Module is compatible with any working CMS library. There are two broad usage scenarios:

Existing CMS library
You can continue using an existing CMS library (one created prior to installing NetBeans and the CMS Support Module) partially or exclusively within NetBeans.
You may need to modify the library if you want extended file specification and/or long variant name capabilities.
New CMS library
You can create a new library (created after installing NetBeans and the CMS Support Module) exclusively or partially for use with NetBeans.
You may want to create the library with extended file specification and/or long variant name capabilities.

Setting up an Example Library

Once you've installed and loaded the CMS Support Module, you are ready to start using it with a new or existing CMS library profile. You may wish to begin with a test library.

If you want to reproduce the examples in this help file, set up a new CMS library as follows:

$ create /dir [.mycmslib] $ cms create lib [.mycmslib] _Remark: %CMS-S-CREATED, CMS Library DISK$:[user.mycmslib] created %CMS-I-LIBIS, library is DISK$:[user.mycmslib] %CMS-S-LIBSET, library set

Adding Extended File Specification Support

The CMS Support Module can use long file names and the greater range of legal characters that are enabled with an ODS-5 volume. This creates two additional CMS library setup requirements:

You must specify extended file specification support at installation. (You can reinstall CMS to select this option.)
Refer to the CMS Installation Guide (3.3.7)

You must create or modify the CMS library using the /EXTENDED_FILENAMES switch:
CREATE LIBRARY <dir-spec> /EXTENDED_FILENAMES MODIFY LIBRARY <dir-spec> /EXTENDED_FILENAMES

If these two conditions are met, extended file specifications will be available via the CMS Support Module interface.

Note Extended file specification support is not necessary for simple mixed-case file names.
Refer to OpenVMS Guide to Extended File Specifications for more information.

Adding Long Variant Name Support

CMS Profiles the use of long variant names if you create or modify a library with the /LONG_VARIANT_NAMES switch.

If your library does not support long variant names, you are limited to single-character identifiers for variant branches.

Note If you try to use a long name in this case, you will receive an error in the output window.
