          Dear Customer:

          Thank you for purchasing the VAX Distributed File Service Ver-
          sion 1.2 (DFS V1.2) software product. This letter contains im-
          portant information that will help you understand and use the
          DFS V1.2 software and its documentation.

          Installation Information

          You can install and use DFS V1.2 on systems running VMS V4.6 or
          later. To install DFS V1.2, follow the instructions in the VAX
          Distributed File Service Installation Guide, which is included
          in your distribution kit.

          An incorrect version of SYS$LIBRARY:DNS$CLIENT.EXE was shipped 
          in VMS V5.2. This can cause unpredictable results when used with
          DFS V1.2. To ensure the proper operation of DFS V1.2 on a VMS 
          V5.2 system, follow the instructions outlined below.

          Before installing DFS V1.2 on a VMS V5.2 system, stop the DNS 
          Client software and delete the incorrect image: 
                             
    	  $ @SYS$MANAGER:DNS$CLIENT_STOP.COM !Stop the DNS Client software 
    	  $ DELETE SYS$LIBRARY:DNS$CLIENT.EXE;* !Delete the bad images
    	  $ DELETE SYS$SYSTEM:DNS$ADVER.EXE;*   

    	  Now install DFS.
                                            
          If you upgrade your system to VMS V5.2 after DFS V1.2 has been
          installed, you must:

    	  $ @SYS$MANAGER:DNS$CLIENT_STOP.COM !Stop the DNS Client software 
    	  $ DELETE SYS$LIBRARY:DNS$CLIENT.EXE;* !Delete the bad images
    	  $ DELETE SYS$SYSTEM:DNS$ADVER.EXE;*   

    	  Now reinstall DFS.

          VMS V5.x Information

          If you are installing DFS V1.2 software on a system running VMS
          V5.0 or later, you must also install the DFS Product Authoriza-
          tion Key (PAK).

          VMS V5.0 introduces the VMS License Management Facility (LMF).
          To use a Digital software product on a VMS V5.x system, you
          are now required to register product license information in
          the system's license database. The DFS V1.2 distribution kit
          includes a sheet of paper that lists the product's license
          information. For new DFS customers, this document is called
          a License PAK; for existing DFS customers, this document is
          called a Service Update PAK (SUP).

          Before installing DFS V1.2, use the LMF utility to register the 
          license information listed on the PAK into the system's license 
          database.

          Refer to the VMS License Management Utility Manual for more
          information about registering and loading the PAK and to the VAX
          Distributed File Service Installation Guide for more information
          on using the PAK with DFS V1.2.

          Release Notes Information

          Please read the on-line DFS V1.2 Release Notes before you
          install DFS on your system. These release notes contain in-
          formation regarding new features, restrictions, warnings, and
          corrected problems. To read these release notes before installa-
          tion, invoke VMSINSTAL with the OPTIONS N parameter and specify
          whether you want to view, copy, or print the release notes. Read
          Section 2.2 in the VAX Distributed File Service Installation
          Guide for information on accessing the release notes.

          Documentation

          Neither the DFS Installation Guide nor the DFS Management Guide 
          has been updated for the DFS V1.2 release. 

          Contents of This Kit

          o  Bill of Materials (BOM)

             Please read the BOM enclosed in this kit and make sure that
             the kit contains all the listed items. If any part of your
             kit is damaged or missing, please call your Digital represen-
             tative.

          o  Media

             The media, if ordered, is included in the distribution kit.

          o  Software Product Description (SPD)

             Your SPD provides an overview of the VAX Distributed File
             Service V1.2 product and its features.

          o  Documentation

             The documentation set for VAX Distributed File Service V1.2
             consists of:

             -  VAX Distributed File Service Installation Guide
             -  VAX Distributed File Service Management Guide

          o  Software Performance Report (SPR)

             Use the SPR form to report any problems with VAX Distributed
             File Service V1.2 (if you purchased warranty services).
