Any differences in product features are indicated in separate sections that follow. DESCRIPTIONN The DECwindows desktop environment provides a graphical user inter-O face to the OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS Alpha operating systems. DECwin-N dows incorporates the OSF/Motif user interface as the design centerO for DECwindows applications. OSF/Motif is a graphical user interfaceN widely acknowledged as the industry standard. This interface allowsR users to interact with the OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS Alpha operating sys-O tems using a point-and-click technique. DECwindows includes a set ofN integrated desktop applications that demonstrate the ease-of-use ofO this user interface and provides OpenVMS Alpha users with a base set of desktop tools.O DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS supports both the DECwin-P dows XUI and the Motif Window Manager. Although the Motif Window Man-Q ager is the default window manager, users can switch easily to the XUIP Window Manager. The DECwindows desktop productivity applications haveN been converted to use Motif, but they also work with the XUI WindowP Manager. The DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS layered prod-S ucts also contain run-time support for the XUI, OSF/Motif Release 1.1.3,N DIGITAL January 1995 M DECwindows Motif[R] Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS SPD 42.19.02O Release 1.2.2, and Release 1.2.3 Toolkits. This means that users canP run XUI and Motif applications, including native applications and, onN OpenVMS Alpha systems, translated applications. (See the TranslatedP Image Environment section of this SPD for more information about run-) ning translated applications.)O DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS is based on the X Consor-P tium's specification for the X Window System[TM], Version 11, ReleaseN 5 (X11R5) and OSF/Motif Release 1.2.3.[*] X Window System standardsO supported as part of DECwindows Motif include the X11 network proto-O col, a base set of workstation fonts, the C language binding for theQ Xlib programming library, and the C language binding for the X Toolkit library.P Support of the X11 network protocol in the client library and displayO server components provides the OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS Alpha operat-P ing systems with the ability to interoperate with other X11-compliant, systems in a distributed fashion.O DECwindows supports the client/server distribution inherent in the XN Window System. This client/server model provides for running X Win-O dow clients on one node and displaying output to another node, usingR a transport to communicate between the nodes. The DECwindows Motif Ver-Q sion 1.2-3 for OpenVMS product provides four transport interfaces: lo-Q cal shared memory, DECnet, TCP/IP (using Digital's TCP/IP Services forR OpenVMS product or other third-party products such as MultiNet and Wol-P longong), and LAT. Users can also provide their own transport subsys-) tems and transport interfaces.R To determine whether a separately orderable DECwindows Motif based lay-P ered product or X application runs on or can communicate with DECwin-O dows Motif for OpenVMS VAX or OpenVMS Alpha systems, consult the ap-4 plication's Software Product Description. ____________________O [*] Software supplied by the Open Software Foundation (OSF) may not be? upward compatible with future DECwindows releases.- 2 M DECwindows Motif[R] Version 1.2-3 for OpenVMS SPD 42.19.02Q The DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS user environment consists of four ba- sic components: 1. Session ManagerP Session Manager provides the top-level user interface to a DECwin-N dows workstation. From Session Manager, users can start applica-N tions, customize their session, and perform security management.N Session Manager also lets users specify the language user inter-N face for supported DECwindows applications if they have ordered,O installed, and are licensed to use the appropriate DECwindows Mo-Q tif for OpenVMS language variant kit(s). The DECwindows Mo-P tif language variant SPDs also contain information on specific lo-N cal hardware and software support provided in the language vari- ant kits. 2. Window ManagerR The Window Manager lets users control the size and placement of win-P dows. The OSF/Motif Window Manager is provided as the default win-O dow manager; users can choose instead to work with the DECwindowsN XUI Window Manager. The window manager can be chosen by an indi-F vidual user or by a system manager for an entire system. 3. FileViewP FileView, a graphical interface to the OpenVMS file system, allowsS users to navigate the file system and to perform operations on files.' 4. DECterm Terminal EmulatorR The DECterm terminal emulator provides workstation users with a tra-Q ditional character-cell interface for existing OpenVMS features andN applications. It is a VT320 terminal emulator. It supports ReGISP and sixel, but is not fully VT340 compatible. The user interface definition filesiP produced by this compiler contain the data that describes the form ofP DECwindows applications. These UIL files also allow OSF/Motif ToolkitP widget and gadget information, such as menu item labels, to be storedN separately from the toolkit and application run-time code. This ca-N pability allows application developers to prototype and easily mod-O ify user interface designs, to separate form from function in appli-oP cations, and to support translatable products that do not require re-' compilation of source files.t, Digital's Extensions to OSF/MotifT The DECwindows Motif product adds value to the standard OSF/Motif ToolkitO by including a library that contains a set of Digital-developed wid- P gets and run-time routines not available from OSF. These pro- P grams can perform virtually all user-mode functions on DECwindows Mo-O tif for OpenVMS Alpha systems.
