PATHWORKS integrates PCs, Macintosh servers, NOSs, net-Fwork transports, and protocols and provides the foundation for client-8server applications and corporate information exchanges.FPATHWORKS provides a framework for integrating personal computers intoCan organization's total information system, so that different typesCof users can share information, large system resources, and network(services across the entire organization.DPATHWORKS for OpenVMS (Macintosh) allows Alpha and VAX[TM] computersCrunning the OpenVMS operating system to offer file, print, and mailEservices to Macintosh clients. By using an Alpha or a VAX server sys-Dtem, Macintosh users can share applications, data, printers, and re-Csources; access information from remote systems on the network; and1apply that information in Macintosh applications.CPATHWORKS for Macintosh software allows Macintosh clients to accessFfile, print, and mail services on OpenVMS. This software also includesEapplications for terminal emulation, X display services, TCP/IP util-Gities, DECnet[TM], and mail. PATHWORKS for Macintosh is used with PATH-FWORKS for OpenVMS (Macintosh) and is required for Macintosh client ac-4cess to these OpenVMS based services (SPD 31.53.xx).C May 1997C AE-PJBDF-TE FeaturesEPATHWORKS for OpenVMS (Macintosh) provides the following features and
capabilities:o DECshare file serviceso DECshare print services o Server management and controlo PATHWORKS Mail Servero AppleTalk[R] for OpenVMS(o AppleTalk-to-DECnet Transport GatewayServer SoftwareFPATHWORKS for OpenVMS (Macintosh) provides the Macintosh user with the*following features of the server software:Co DECshare File Services - The Macintosh user is provided with ac-D cess to remote OpenVMS file systems as a transparent extension ofD the client's local disk facilities. Macintosh files are stored onC the Alpha and VAX systems and accessed as if they were stored onE the user's local disk. DECshare file services are based on the Ap-D pleTalk for OpenVMS V3.2 network transport and are compliant with+ the Apple[R] Filing Protocol (AFP) V2.1.GDECshare file services assign the Macintosh type and creator attributesCto files that were not created on a Macintosh. The creator and typeCdetermine the icon that is displayed on the Macintosh desktop. WhenCa Macintosh user selects a file that was not created using the Mac-Cintosh, DECshare file services uses a lookup table to assign a typeEand creator based on the file's extension. This table may be modified,to tailor the server to site-specific needs.CEach Macintosh file stored on the file server is stored as an Open-EVMS file in RMS Sequential file format. These Macintosh files are ac-Fcessible to OpenVMS users and applications that can interpret the con-Ctent and organization of a file written by a Macintosh application." 2 DThe file server can read all RMS file types that can be read sequen-Ctially, allowing Macintosh applications to read files written by anFOpenVMS application. Each read issued by the Macintosh application re-Esults in the presentation to the application of the next n bytes con- tained sequentially in the file.FAFP byte-range locking is supported for Macintosh applications access-,ing files provided through the file service.ESystem administrators can create file services that appear in any oneDof the local AppleTalk zones, which provides flexibility in your en-Evironment. System administrators can also limit the number of connec-Gtions to a file server volume and set a timeout value for inactive con-Fnections to a file server. The file server can detect unauthorized in-.trusions using the OpenVMS Intrusion database.Do DECshare Print Services - Remote printers appear to the MacintoshD user as a transparent extension of the client's local facilities.C Macintosh users can access OpenVMS print queues to print to bothC Apple LaserWriter[R] and DIGITAL PostScript[R] printers. The Ap-I ple LaserWriter can be accessible to OpenVMS users via a LocalTalk[R]-E to-Ethernet router, a direct Ethernet connection (for those Laser-D Writer printers that support this), a terminal server (LAT) port,@ or a direct connection to a serial port on the server system.CThe system administrator assigns a service name to the print queue.FThe Macintosh users select the printer from the Chooser as they do lo-Ecal printers. Then the printer I/O is directed to the defined and se-lected DECshare print service.HDECshare print services include support for the DECshare Receiver, whichMhandles print requests from the Macintosh. The Receiver stores the PostScriptCdata it receives from the Macintosh in a temporary OpenVMS file be-Efore sending the data to the OpenVMS print queuing system. System ad-Gministrators can choose to disable the Receiver so that Macintosh usersFcannot print to a specific LaserWriter. System administrators can alsoDhide a LaserWriter from the Chooser, so that users who want to printFto a specific printer are required to print through the DECshare printservice." 3 GDECshare print services also support the DECshare print symbiont, whichJtransfers data from Alpha and VAX systems to an Apple LaserWriter printer.DThe DECshare print symbiont also converts an ASCII file submitted byFan OpenVMS user to PostScript data before transferring the data to theEprinter. The symbiont does not support full ANSI conversion. DECshareDuses the DECprint[R] Printing Services to transfer data to a DIGITALPostScript printer.FThe MSA$MANAGER utility is used to create print services. Print queuesEfor DIGITAL's printers must be previously defined on the OpenVMS sys-Etem. LaserWriter queues using the DECshare print symbiont are createdby the MSA$MANAGER utility.Go Server Management and Control - When a server offers a file resourceD for use, the system administrator can associate an Access Control6 List, which specifies privileges assigned to users.EWhile the software may be running on more than one node of a VMSclus-Dter[TM], each Macintosh volume served can only be served from a sin-Igle file server in the cluster. As a result, there is no cluster failoverof a served volume.FAn administrator's utility (MSA$MANAGER) is provided to allow the sys-Dtem administrator to add and remove services and show resources. TheFsystem administrator can also manage a remote server using the SET RE-
MOTE command.CA second administrator's utility (ATK$MANAGER) is provided to allowCthe system administrator to set up and maintain AppleTalk for Open-2VMS and the AppleTalk-to-DECnet transport gateway." 4 Do PATHWORKS Mail Server - The mail server included in PATHWORKS forG OpenVMS (Macintosh) provides Macintosh and PC clients with the abil-C ity to send and receive electronic mail messages. A mail accountD must be established on the OpenVMS server for each client, unlessG an account already exists. Mail can be sent to this account by otherF Macintosh clients as well as users of any mail system that can com-C municate with OpenVMS mail software. The mail server then routesD messages to the appropriate client when the client logs in to the
server.CThe PATHWORKS for OpenVMS (Macintosh) mail server provides the Mac- Cintosh user with folders, distribution lists, and delivery capabil-Gities. Notification of new messages occurs when the Macintosh user logsDin to a network session and the PATHWORKS Listener is running on theclient.TNetwork ConnectivityEo Appletalk for OpenVMS - AppleTalk for OpenVMS V3.2 is an implemen-oE tation of Apple's AppleTalk Networking protocols and interface li-pE braries for OpenVMS systems. AppleTalk for OpenVMS allows an Open-WD VMS system to communicate with an AppleTalk network. The DECshareD file and print services use this network transport. The AppleTalkE for OpenVMS protocol stack includes support for the following pro-kF tocols: ADSP, AELAP, AARP, AEP, NBP, ZIP, RTMP (full set), ATP, ASPE (server only), and PAP (client and server). The ASP client and the F AFP protocols are not implemented in the AppleTalk for OpenVMS pro- tocol stack.KEAppleTalk for OpenVMS V3.2 supports AppleTalk Phase 2 protocols. Only EMacintosh computers connected to Phase 2 networks can access servicesausing AppleTalk for OpenVMS.EAppleTalk for OpenVMS also allows routing, or tunneling, through DEC-dGnet. When tunneling, AppleTalk packets are encapsulated in DECnet pack-nGets, so that the AppleTalk network can be extended, and Macintosh usersDcan access remote AppleTalk networks and servers as if they were lo-cal." 5o aFThe router provides AppleTalk Internet routing, zone management, rout-Cing table maintenance, and name-binding broadcast request handling.iDWhen routing, or tunneling, datalink speeds below 56 kilobits/secondFare not recommended and speeds below 19.2 kilobits/second are not sup-Eported. The datalink speed must be capable of handling DECnet and Ap-9EpleTalk traffic (including all protocol overhead) without congestion.TEThat is, there must be sufficient bandwidth to maintain reliable com-emunications.Eo AppleTalk-to-DECnet Transport Gateway - AppleTalk-to-DECnet Trans-rE port Gateway, which is OpenVMS software, connects a Macintosh witheD a DECnet service on any DECnet node. As a result, Macintosh usersE who have only AppleTalk connectivity, but no DECnet resident soft-vD ware, can participate in task-to-task applications. Macintosh ap-E plications that are written to take advantage of the AppleTalk-to-tE DECnet gateway can participate in AppleTalk-to-DECnet task-to-taskoD communications. The gateway provides bidirectional conversion be-F tween AppleTalk ADSP and DECnet NSP protocols. The gateway supportsG up to 1000 connections from client applications - provided that suf-E ficient system CPU and memory resources are available. SignificantF system tuning will be necessary if the number of sessions is raised& appreciably from the default of 32." 6p Restrictions and LimitationsEBecause PATHWORKS for OpenVMS (Macintosh) uses AppleTalk Phase 2 pro-tFtocols, services provided by PATHWORKS for OpenVMS (Macintosh) serversDwill only be accessible to Macintoshes that are connected to Phase 2Fnetworks. Phase 1 networks can coexist with Phase 2 networks, providedFthat Phase 1 to Phase 2 transition router is suitably placed somewhereCin the network. Use of Phase 1 protocols anywhere in the network is 2not recommended due to the increased network load.GWhile AFP byte range locking is supported among Macintosh clients, onlyMDfile locking is supported with other types of clients (MS-DOS[R] and	OS/2[R]).sFFor a serially connected LaserWriter, the following characters in fontCfamilies are not available: Ctrl-C, Ctrl-D, Ctrl-Q, Ctrl-S, Ctrl-T.cEThese characters are used by the PostScript interpreter for handshak-pHing purposes. Attempts to print these characters result in a space char-Eacter. This restriction does not apply to AppleTalk printers directlyp#connected on Ethernet or LocalTalk.dEThe PATHWORKS mail server restricts folder names to 39 characters. IfcCa user creates a folder name with more than 39 characters, the named&is truncated after the 39th character.EThe DECshare implementation of AFP V2.1 does not support Blank Accessl+Privileges or the AFP Cat Search functions.nSOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS :For Systems Using Terminals (No DECwindows[TM] Interface):-o OpenVMS Alpha Operating System V6.1 - V7.1 -o OpenVMS VAX Operating System V5.5-2 - V7.1 $For Workstations Running DECwindows:-o OpenVMS Alpha Operating System V6.1 - V7.1 " 7 u-o OpenVMS VAX Operating System V5.5-2 - V7.1 'PATHWORKS for Macintosh Client Software DPATHWORKS for Macintosh V1.3A (SPD 31.53.xx) is recommended for bestFcompatibility and performance on the latest Macintosh computers.
