          Preface

This installation guide describes how to install VAX
Xway on the VAX/VMS operating system. It is for system
                   managers.

Keep this installation guide with your distribution
kit. You will need to refer to it again if you receive
any maintenance updates or need to reinstall VAX Xway.

The installation guide describes the installation
procedure step by step. The dialog is interactive. The
installation procedure prompts you to answer questions
and change volumes, and waits for you to tell it to
                   continue.

This installation guide does not contain the release
notes. The release notes are provided on-line. You can
display and print them from within the installation
                   procedure.

To read the release notes after the installation, type
                   or print the file SYS$HELP:XWAY012.RELEASE_NOTES.

          1 Preinstallation

This chapter describes how to prepare for the
installation of VAX Xway V1.2 software on your VAX/VMS
                   system.

          __________________________________________________________
          1.1 The Distribution Kit

You can receive VAX Xway V1.2 on two different media
types: MAG tape (16MT9) and TK50.

The installation procedure prompts you to mount the
volumes. To mount the distribution medium, see Chapter
3 ("Installing Software") of the VMS System Manager's
Manual for your system. The chapter also details
several options to the installation procedure. Be sure
                   to read it.

Each distribution kit includes all files needed to
install and execute Xway V1.2. Release notes about
the Xway installation and operation are available on-
line and can be displayed and printed from within the
                   installation procedure.

The VAX Xway kit contains three savesets:

                   o XWAY012.A

                   o XWAY012.B

                   o XWAY012.C

                                                                       1-1

                   Preinstallation

          __________________________________________________________
          1.2 Prerequisite Software

To run Xway V1.2 you must have VMS V5.0 or later on
                   your system.

          __________________________________________________________
          1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements

Before you can install Xway, you must have the
                   following:

                   o An Xway distribution kit

o Access to a privileged system manager's account

o A minimum of 2,200 free blocks during installation
and a minimum of 1,800 free blocks after
                      installation

o A minimum of 400 unused global pages and a minimum
                      of 10 global sections

o A proper license installed and loaded

          _____________________________
1.3.1 Checking for adequate disk space

You need at least 2,200 free blocks before attempting
this installation. 1,800 blocks of this will be space
                   permanently allocated to Xway files.

Use the following command to determine if you have
enough free blocks on your system disk (or target disk
                   system) to install Xway:

                      $ SHOW DEVICE SYS$SYSDEVICE

                   Preinstallation

          _____________________________
          1.3.2 Checking the System Parameters

Before you install Xway, you must compare the required
number of global pages and global sections with the
values on your system. The installation procedure
checks these system parameters. If a parameter does
not meet the minimum value, the installation will
terminate. See the VAX/VMS System Manager's Reference
Manual for information on modifying GBLPAGES and
                   GBLSECTIONS values.

To determine the number of global pages and sections on
                   your system, do the following:

1 Invoke the INSTALL utility by entering:

                         $ INSTALL :==  $INSTALL/COMMAND_MODE
                         $ INSTALL

2 Determine the number of available global pages by
                      entering:

                         INSTALL> LIST/GLOBAL

This command determines whether enough global pages
are available to install Xway. It displays a list
of all currently known global sections. At the end
of the list is a summary of the number of global
sections used, the number of global pages used, and
the number of global pages unused.

Xway requires approximately 400 global pages. If
there are fewer than 400 unused pages, you can
delete an existing known image by using the INSTALL
utility. You can also increase the GBLPAGES system
parameter with the SYSTEM GENERATION utility by
using AUTOGEN.COM. For more information on using
AUTOGEN, see the VAX/VMS System Manager's Reference
                      Manual.

                                                                       1-3

                   Preinstallation

                                                Note

Record the number of global sections used
because you will need this information when
                         checking the global sections.

3 Exit from the INSTALL utility.

                         INSTALL> EXIT

4 Determine the number of available global sections by
using the SYSGEN utility. Enter the following:

                         $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSGEN
                         SYSGEN> USE CURRENT
                         SYSGEN> SHOW GBLSECTIONS

These commands determine whether enough global
sections are available to install Xway. The first
number displayed is the maximum number of global
sections. Compare this number to the number of
global sections in use displayed by the INSTALL
                      utility.

Xway requires 10 global sections. Therefore if the
amount displayed plus 10 exceeds the system maximum,
you must increase the number of available global
sections before you can install Xway.

To increase the number, you must increase the
GBLSECTIONS parameter with the SYSTEM GENERATION
utility by using AUTOGEN.COM. For more information
on AUTOGEN, refer to the VAX/VMS System Manager's
                      Reference Guide.

If the amount displayed plus 10 is less than the
system maximum, you can install Xway.

          2 Installation

This chapter explains how to install VAX Xway and
describes error messages you might receive during
                   installation.

          __________________________________________________________
          2.1 Installing VAX Xway

This section contains the steps you follow to install
Xway. You will have to log on to the system manager's
account and make a backup of the system disk, checking
all parameters. You should install Xway in stand-alone
mode. You will have to make sure all users have logged
off of the system and that all batch jobs are complete.
Then you will shut down the DECnet network and invoke
                   VMSINSTAL to install Xway.

VMSINSTAL prompts you to enter information. Most
queries require a simple YES or NO answer. Respond with
Y or N, as appropriate, or press <Return> to choose the
                   default.

Enhancements to VMSINSTAL in future releases of VMS
might result in additional prompts appearing during
the installation. Although such prompts might not be
documented in this installation guide, the installation
                   will proceed normally.

                                                                       2-1

          2.2 Installation Procedure

1 Log on to the system manager's account. Set the
default directory to SYS$UPDATE by entering:

                         $ SET DEFAULT SYS$UPDATE

2 Make a backup of the system disk and check the
                      system parameters.

3 Start the installation by entering:

                         $ @VMSINSTAL XWAY012 [device] options N

[device] is the name of the device on which you
will mount the Xway distribution media (for example,
                      MUA0:.)

VMSINSTAL displays information similar to the
                      following:

VAX/VMS Software Product Installation Procedure V5.0

                  It is 22-JUL-1990 at 08:08.
Enter a question mark (?) at any time for help.

Are you satisfied with the backup of your system disk [YES]?

Enter a question mark (?) at any prompt to get
                      on-line help.

If you have not made a backup of your system
disk, type N and <Return>. You will exit from the
                      installation procedure.

If you have backed up your system disk, enter Y or
just press <Return> to continue the installation
                      procedure.

VMSINSTAL checks to see if users are logged on to
the system. If so, VMSINSTAL displays a warning
message. You can stop the installation by pressing
<Return> when prompted to continue the installation.

4 Mount the first installation kit volume when
VMSINSTAL displays a message similar to the
                      following:

Please mount the first volume of the set on [device]
                  Are you ready?

5 After mounting the volume, type Y and press <Return>
to continue the installation. VMSINSTAL displays the
                      following messages:

on your screen. If you select Option 2 or 3,
VMSINSTAL prompts you for a queue name:

                  * Queue name  [SYS$PRINT]:

Enter a queue name or press <Return> to indicate the
                      default output print device SYS$PRINT.

If you select Option 4, VMSINSTAL does not display
                      or print the release notes.

                                                                       2-3

                   Installation

VMSINSTAL asks if you want to continue with the
                      installation:

Do you want to continue the installation [NO]? :

7 Enter N or press <Return> to stop the installation.
                      Enter Y to continue.

If you enter Y to continue the installation,
                      VMSINSTAL displays the following message:

                          Version: 1.2
                          Release Date: 19-JUL-1990

                  * Does this product have an authorization key registered
                    and loaded? yes

8 If you have already registered and loaded the
VAX Xway license, enter YES. The installation
will continue at Step 9. If your license is not
registered and loaded, enter NO. VMSINSTAL displays
                      the following message:

                   Installation

You do not have the Xway license currently installed on your
system. You may continue with this installation, or you may
stop to load the license at this time. If you do continue,
you will not be able to use the Xway product until the
                  license is loaded.

                  * Do you wish to continue with the Xway installation? [N]? YES

                      a. You can elect to continue the installation
even though you have not loaded the VAX Xway
license. If you enter YES, VMSINSTAL displays the
                         following messages:

It is recommended that the IVP be run after the license has
                  been registered

The installation then continues at Step 9.

                      b. You can choose to stop the installation at this
point by entering NO or by pressing <Return>
so you can load the Xway license. VMSINSTAL
displays the following messages and ends the
                         installation.

You have chosen to quit this installation. To install the
                  Xway license, use the procedure:

                          SYS$UPDATE:VMSLICENSE.COM

%VMSINSTAL-E-INSFAIL, The installation of XWAY V1.2 has failed.

                        VMSINSTAL procedure done at 11:11

9 This installation procedure provides an automated
Installation Verification Procedure (IVP). You have
the option of running the IVP automatically after
                      the installation.

                  * Do you want to run the IVP after the installation [YES]?

                                                                       2-5

                   Installation

Digital recommends that the IVP always be run after
an installation. However, if the VAX Xway license
is not already loaded, then the IVP will fail. If
you answered NO to question 8 above, you should also
                      enter NO to this question.

10 During this installation, VMSINSTAL provides new
files to replace existing versions. You should purge
the older versions to save disk space. (You can keep
them if you feel they might be useful.)

                  * Do you want to purge the files replaced by this installation [YES]?

Press <Return> or enter Y to purge the old version
of Xway from your system. Enter N to keep the old
                      version of Xway.

11 VMSINSTAL asks you where you want to place Xway
V1.2 library files. You should place them in the
directory SYS$COMMON:[XWAY], which is the default
                      location.

If you do not have enough space on your system
disk, you can specify another location by entering
a valid VMS directory specification in the form:
                      device:[directory].

If the directory you specify does not exist,
VMSINSTAL will create it. VMSINSTAL will equate
the system logical XWAY$LIBRARY to the directory
                      that you specify.

If the directory SYS$COMMON:[XWAY] currently exists
on your system, VMSINSTAL displays the following
                      message:

The directory SYS$COMMON:[XWAY] currently exists on your system.
This is the recommended location for the Xway V1.2 library files

                   Installation

The Xway required files are copied to the Xway library
                  (XWAY$LIBRARY)
                  Enter ? to get help.
                  * Specify Xway library location [SYS$COMMON:[XWAY]]?

12 Enter the device and directory you want to use.
If the device you specified does not exist on
the system, VMSINSTAL repeats the prompt. Specify
                      another device and directory.

VMSINSTAL continues the installation without asking
any more questions. VMSINSTAL optionally runs the
Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) after it
                      completes the installation.

VMSINSTAL displays the following messages as it
completes the installation and the IVP:

All questions necessary for the installation of Xway have

          4.1 Modifying the SYSTARTUP_V5.COM File

The installation procedure for VAX Xway V1.2
will add the command file for starting Xway
                   (SYS$STARTUP:XWAY$STARTUP.COM) to the SYSMAN startup
                   database.

You should remove any references to XWAY$STARTUP.COM
from your SYSTARTUP_V5.COM procedure. If you do not,
the command procedure will be executed twice at system
                   startup.

          __________________________________________________________
          4.2 Xway Logical Names

The VAX Xway V1.2 installation procedure creates the
                   following directories:

                      XWAY$LIBRARY
                      XWAY$EXAMPLES

The logical XWAY$LIBRARY defaults to SYS$COMMON:[XWAY].
However, the installation procedure creates it on your
system according to the answer you gave during the
                   installation.

                   The logical XWAY$EXAMPLES defaults to
                   SYS$COMMON:[SYSHLP.EXAMPLES.XWAY]. This directory
contains simple examples of how to use the Xway
Callable Interface to perform conversions from user
programs. These examples are the source programs used
                   during the Installation Verification Procedure.

                   Both logicals are defined in
                   SYS$STARTUP:XWAY$STARTUP.COM.

                                                                       4-1

          __________________________________________________________
4.3 Using Xway in a VAXcluster Environment

If you are using Xway on other nodes in a VAX cluster,
you must also perform the following steps to insure
that VAX Xway is available to other licensed nodes:

1 Replace the DCL tables on the other nodes.

2 Run the Xway startup command procedure on each node.

To do this, you should use the SYSMAN utility by
                   entering the following commands:

                       $ SYSMAN :== $SYS$SYSTEM:SYSMAN
                       $ SYSMAN
                       SYSMAN> SET ENVIRONMENT/CLUSTER
                       SYSMAN> DO @SYS$STARTUP:XWAY$STARTUP.COM
                       SYSMAN> DO INSTALL REPLACE SYS$LIBRARY:DCLTABLES.EXE
                       SYSMAN> EXIT
                       $
