          ________________________________________________________________

This guide describes how to install DECimage Storage Manager
on the VAX/VMS operating system. It is intended for system
managers. This guide applies to Version T1.0-4.
Before continuing with this guide, please note the following:

o Keep this guide with your distribution kit. You will need
to refer to it again should you need to reinstall DECimage
                Storage Manager for any reason.
o This guide describes the installation procedure step
by step. The procedure, for the most part, is self-
explanatory. The system prompts you to answer questions
and change volumes, and waits for you to tell it to con-
                tinue.

o All user-entered commands are shown in bold letters.
o For information on reporting problems with DECimage
Storage Manager, see the section Determining and Reporting
                Problems later in this guide.

              o  This document does not contain release notes information;
instead, release notes are provided on line. You can
read the release notes before you install the DECimage
Storage Manager product and at any time after the product
                is installed.

                                                                         v

                                            NOTE

To gain access to the release notes before you in-
stall the DECimage Storage Manager product, follow
the installation procedure up to step 4, in which
you can choose to read or print the release notes
                    and discontinue the installation procedure.
Although the release notes file installed by
VMSINSTAL has a unique name from maintenance up-
date to maintenance update, take care not to delete
                    previous versions of that file.

To read the release notes after the installation, display
                or print the file SYS$HELP:ISM010.RELEASE_NOTES.
The HELP file also directs you to the release notes file.
After the installation, enter the following:

                  $ HELP ISM010 RELEASE_NOTES

For more information on installing the DECimage Storage
Manager product on VAX/VMS systems, see the Guide to
VAX/VMS Software Installation and the VAX/VMS System
                Manager's Reference Manual.

                is present

          _________________________________________________________________
1.2 Accessing the On Line Release Notes

The DECimage Storage Manager product provides on line release
notes that you can choose to display or print during the
             installation procedure.
The prompt to display or print the release notes appears in
the installation procedure, as noted in the description of
step 4, only when you invoke VMSINSTAL with the OPTIONS N
             parameter.

To gain access to the release notes before you install
DECimage Storage Manager, follow the installation proce-
dure up to step 4, in which you can choose to read or print
the release notes and discontinue the installation procedure.

To read the release notes after the installation, display or
             print the file SYS$HELP:ISM010.RELEASE_NOTES.

The HELP file also directs you to the release notes file.
After the installation, type the following:
               $ HELP ISM010 RELEASE_NOTES

          _________________________________________________________________
          1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements

Before you can install the DECimage Storage Manager product,
you must have the following privileges and resources:

o SETPRV privileges, or CMKRNL, WORLD, and SYSPRV privileges
o At least 2500 blocks of free disk space during installa-
tion, and ???? blocks of disk space after installation

o 9 Mbytes of physical memory (minimum configuration)
o Approximately 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your type of
                media and your system configuration

          _________________________________________________________________
1.4 User Account Quotas and Privileges

To use the DECimage Storage Manager product, each account
             must meet the following requirements:

              o TMPMBX and PRMMBX privileges
o AST limit (ASTLM): 24 (minimum)

              o Buffered I/O quota (BIOLM): 18 (minimum)
o Buffered I/O byte count quota (BYTLM): 4096 (minimum)

              o Direct I/O quota (DIOLM): 18 (minimum)
o Enqueue quota (ENQLM): 30 (minimum)

o Open file quota (FILLM): 50 (minimum)

o Paging file quota (PGFLQUO): 10,000 pages (minimum)

o Working set size (WSDEF): 300 pages (minimum); 512-1024
                pages (application dependent)
          _________________________________________________________________

          1.5 Special Requirements
The ISM system manager needs CMKRNL and SYSNAM privileges to
             run ISM$SERVER_START.COM and ISM$SERVER_STOP.COM.

This procedure creates identifier entries in the RIGHTSLIST.DAT
             file.
This procedure prompts for the location of the server direc-
tories and files. As the ISM software requires a large amount
of disk space, select this device carefully.

This procedure prompts for the type of installation: server,
client, or both. A server installation installs the ISM
server software on this node. A client installation installs
the ISM client software on this node (provides access to the
ISM language independent call interface). Both installs both
the client and server software on this node.
The installation verification procedure (IVP) attempts to do
a loopback test when you install both the server and client.
First, it attempts to connect to the server through proxy
access (using the installing account). When this fails, it
prompts you for your password and retries.

          _________________________________________________________________

          1.6 Using VMSINSTAL
VMSINSTAL is a command procedure that installs this product.
In step 2 of the installation procedure, described in the
next section, you must invoke VMSINSTAL.

The VMSINSTAL command line has the following format:
                     $@SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL ISM010 ddn: OPTIONS N

             ISM010
Refer to the label on the DECimage Storage Manager distribu-
             tion kit.

             ddn:
Represents a device name for the DECimage Storage Manager
installation media, where dd is the device code and n is the
unit number. You do not need to use the console drive. CSA1:
is the device name used in examples in this document.

             OPTIONS N
Represents the qualifier you should provide if you want
VMSINSTAL to prompt you to display or print the release
             notes.

If you do not supply these parameters, VMSINSTAL prompts
you for the product and device names. However, if you do not
include the OPTIONS N parameter, VMSINSTAL does not prompt
you to display or print the release notes.
When you invoke VMSINSTAL, it checks the following:

o Whether you logged in to the system manager's account - It
is recommended that you install layered software from the
                system manager's account.
o Whether you have adequate quotas for installing layered
products - VMSINSTAL checks for the following quota val-
                ues:
                 _ ASTLM = 24

                 _ BIOLM = 18
                 _ BYTLM = 18000

                 _ DIOLM = 18
                 _ ENQLM = 30

                 _ FILLM = 20

VMSINSTAL then checks to see if either of the following
conditions exist. If so, you should discontinue them before
resuming the installation procedure. The conditions are:

o Whether DECnet is up and running
o Whether there are any users logged in to the system

If VMSINSTAL detects either of these conditions, it gives you
the opportunity to stop the installation procedure by prompt-
ing you to continue. If you want to stop the installation,
             press the RETURN key.
          _________________________________________________________________
          2 Installing DECimage Storage Manager

This section contains excerpts from the installation proce-
             dure and provides explanatory text.
If you need to abort the installation procedure, press
CTRL/Y. When you press CTRL/Y, the installation procedure
deletes all files it has created up to that point and ex-
its. If you want to retry the installation procedure after
pressing CTRL/Y, you must proceed from step 2.

Note that enhancements to VMSINSTAL in future releases of
the VAX/VMS operating system may result in additional prompts
appearing during the course of the installation. Although
such prompts may not be documented in this installation
guide, the installation should proceed normally.
Step 1: Log in to the system manager's account.

          <RET>
               Username: SYSTEM
               Password: <RET>

             Step 2: Invoke VMSINSTAL.

               * Select option [2]: 4

If you select option 1, VMSINSTAL displays the release notes
immediately on your screen. If you select option 2, VMSINSTAL
prompts you for a queue name.

You can type a queue name (or press the RETURN key to indi-
cate the default output print device, SYS$PRINT).

If you select option 4, VMSINSTAL copies the release notes to
             SYS$HELP.
Next, VMSINSTAL displays the following prompt:

Do you want to continue the installation [NO]?: Y <RET>
If you type NO or press the RETURN key, VMSINSTAL discontin-

%VMSINSTAL-I-RELMOVED, The product's release notes have been successfully
               moved to SYS$HELP.

             Step 5: Select installation options.

               * Do you want to run the IVP after installation [YES]? <RET>
               * Do you want to purge files replaced by this installation [YES]? <RET>
The Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) runs tests to
check that the installation procedure was successful. Press
the RETURN key to run the IVP after the installation. If
you do not want to run the IVP, type NO in response to the
             prompt.

The files in SYS$SYSTEM and SYS$LIBRARY containing previous
releases of DECimage Storage Manager are replaced during the
installation with the new release. However, the old files
are not automatically purged. Purging is recommended. In
response to the purging prompt, press the RETURN key to purge
the files, or type NO to keep them. The system HELP files are
             updated in either case.
             Step 6: Read Informational messages.

%VMSINSTAL-I-MOVEFILES, files will now be moved to their
               target directories...
The installation procedure displays a number of information
messages. Be sure to read these messages.

If the installation procedure is successful, the files will
be moved to their target directory.

In addition, the SYS$HELP:HELPLIB.HLB is updated to include
the new version of the DECimage Storage Manager HELP text
             and the command-name command line definition, respectively;
and the DECimage Storage Manager release notes are copied to
             SYS$HELP:ISM010.RELEASE_NOTES.
The installation procedure creates or modifies a number of
files. For a complete list of files created or modified, see
Appendix A, Files Created or Modified by ISM Installation
             Procedure.

Step 7: The Installation Verification Procedure.
The installation procedure now calls the Installation
Verification Procedure (IVP) to verify that DECimage Storage
Manager was successfully installed. If this option was
chosen, the installation procedure calls the Installation
Verification Procedure (IVP) to verify that DECimage Storage
             Manager was successfully installed.

Step 8: End the installation procedure.

          5 Maintenance Updates

DIGITAL may periodically issue maintenance updates of
DECimage Storage Manager. Each update will consist of an
installation kit. You should install this kit as described in
this document or in any documentation that may accompany the
             maintenance update.
Each time DIGITAL releases a maintenance update, the prod-
uct's version number changes. For example, if the current
version is 1.0, the version number of the first maintenance
update will be 1.1. In addition, the maintenance update will
usually include changes to the release notes. The release
notes describe the changes that have been made to DECimage
Storage Manager since the previous release.

The update release notes are provided on line. You can read
the release notes before you install DECimage Storage Manager
and at any time after you install the product. For in-
formation on reading the release notes before installing

the DECimage Storage Manager product, follow the instal-
lation procedure up to step 4. To read the release notes
after installing the product, display or print the file
             SYS$HELP:ISM010.RELEASE_NOTES.

          6 Improving Product Performance

To improve the DECimage Storage Manager product's perfor-
             mance:
              o Install DSL$SHR.EXE.

o Vary the RUN command qualifiers in ISM$SERVER_STARTUP to
                allow greater system resource utilization.

          7 Determining and Reporting Problems

If an error occurs while you are using DECimage Storage
Manager product, and you believe that the error is caused
by a problem with the DECimage Storage Manager product, you
should take one of the following actions:
o If you have a BASIC or DECsupport Software Agreement,
you should call your Customer Support Center. (With these
services, you receive telephone support that provides
high-level advisory and remedial assistance. For more
information, contact your local DIGITAL representative.)

o If you have a Self-Maintenance Software Agreement, you may
submit a Software Performance Report (SPR).
o If you purchased DECimage Storage Manager within the last
90 days and this is a nonconformance problem, you can
submit a Software Performance Report (SPR).

If you find an error in the DECimage Storage Manager documen-
tation, you should fill out and submit the Reader's Comments
form at the back of the guide in which the error was found.
If you report a documentation error, specify the title of
the guide or manual and the section and page number where the
             error was found.
