              Convention______________Meaning____________________________

              <Return> In examples, a key name is shown
                                      within a box to indicate that
                                      you press a key on the keyboard.
                                      <Return> is not usually shown
                                      in syntax statements or in all
                                      examples; however, assume that
                                      you must press <Return> after
                                      entering a command or responding

              Preparing to Install DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS

              This chapter discusses the preparations and requirements
              necessary for installing DEC InfoServer Client Software for
              VMS.

              This manual applies to Version 1.0 of DEC InfoServer Client
              Software for VMS and all subsequent maintenance releases up
              to the next major product release.

              Your bill of materials (BOM) and indented bills report
              (BIL) specify the number and contents of your media.
              Be sure to verify the contents of your kit with this
              information. If your kit is damaged or if you find
              that parts of it are missing, contact your Digital
              representative.

              DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS provides online
              release notes. Digital strongly recommends that you read
              the release notes before proceeding with the installation.
              For information on accessing the online release notes,
              see Section 2.1. The release notes are also included as
              Appendix C of this document.

        1.1 Required Operating System Components

              The VMS operating system comes with a variety of support
              options, or classes. Classes include such features as
              networking and RMS journaling. To use DEC InfoServer
              Client Software for VMS, your system should be running
              VMS Version 5.0 to Version 5.3-2 software that includes the
              Base Operating System.

              For a complete list of the required classes, see the
              Software Support Addendum (SSA), which comes with the
              Software Product Description (SPD).

        1.2 Prerequisite Hardware

              DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS requires that the
              system have an Ethernet device installed.

        1.3 License Registration

              DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS does not require a
              license to be registered with the VMS License Management
              Facility. Every InfoServer is sold with license capacity
              for four concurrent client accesses. If this is found to be
              insufficient, contact your Digital sales representative to
              purchase additional client licenses for the InfoServer.

              ___________________________________________________________

              User account quotas are stored in the file SYSUAF.DAT. Use
              the VMS Authorize Utility (AUTHORIZE) to verify and change
              user account quotas. First set your directory to SYS$SYSTEM
              and then run AUTHORIZE:

              $ SET DEFAULT SYS$SYSTEM
              $ RUN AUTHORIZE
              UAF>

              At the UAF> prompt, enter the SHOW command with an account
              name to check a particular account. For example:

              UAF> SHOW SMITH

              To change a quota, enter the MODIFY command. The following
              example changes the FILLM quota for the SMITH account and
              then exits from the utility:

              UAF> MODIFY SMITH /FILLM=50
              UAF> EXIT

              After you exit from the utility, the system displays
              messages indicating whether or not changes were made. Once
              the changes have been made, you must log out and log in
              again for the new quotas to take effect.

              For more information on modifying account quotas, see the
              description of the Authorize Utility in the VMS System
              Management Subkit.

        Preparing to Install DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS
        1.4 Installation Procedure Requirements

        1.4.3 VMSINSTAL Requirements

              When you invoke VMSINSTAL, it checks the following:

              o Whether you have set your default device and directory
                 to SYS$UPDATE

              o Whether you are logged in to a privileged account

              o Whether you have adequate quotas for installation

              o  Whether DECnet is running

              o Whether any users are logged in to the system

              Note that VMSINSTAL requires that the installation account
              have a minimum of the following quotas:

                 ASTLM = 24
                 BIOLM = 18
                 BYTLM = 18,000
                 DIOLM = 18
                 ENQLM = 30
                 FILLM = 20

              If VMSINSTAL detects any problems during the installation,
              it notifies you and asks if you want to continue the
              installation. In some instances, you can enter YES to
              continue. To stop the installation process and correct
              the situation, enter NO or press RETURN. Then correct the
              problem and restart the installation.

        1.4.4 Backing Up Your System Disk

              At the beginning of the installation, VMSINSTAL asks if you
              have backed up your system disk. Digital recommends that
              you do a system disk backup before installing any software.

              Use the backup procedures that are established at your
              site. For details on performing a system disk backup,
              see the section on the Backup Utility in the VMS System
              Management Subkit.

        1.4.5 DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS Requirements

              DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS will check if either
              VMS Services for PCs (PCSA) or Remote System Manager (RSM)
              has been installed on the system. The installation will
              print a warning message if any PCSA or RSM drivers or
              control programs are found.

                  compatible with the new drivers. New versions of the control programs
                  will be provided by this installation. If these control programs were
                  provided by either the RSM or PCSA products, you will want to review
                  Appendix C and the post-installation chapter of the installation guide

                        Installing DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS

              This chapter explains how to install DEC InfoServer Client
              Software for VMS. Section 2.1 contains a step-by-step
              description of the installation procedure.

              The last section covers postinstallation considerations.

        2.1 The Installation Procedure

              The DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS installation
              procedure consists of a series of questions and
              informational messages. See Appendix A for a sample
              installation.

              To abort the installation procedure at any time, press
              Ctrl/Y. When you press Ctrl/Y, the installation procedure
              deletes all files it has created up to that point and
              exits. You can then start the installation again.

              1. Invoke VMSINSTAL.

                 @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL saveset-name device-name OPTIONS N

                 To start the installation, invoke the VMSINSTAL command
                 procedure from a privileged account, such as the SYSTEM
                 account. VMSINSTAL is in the SYS$UPDATE directory. The
                 following list defines the elements of the VMSINSTAL
                 command procedure:

                 saveset-name
                 The installation name for the component. For DEC
                 InfoServer Client Software for VMS, use the following
                 installation name:

                 ESS010

                 device-name
                 The name of the device on which you plan to mount the
                 media. For example, MTA0: is the device name for a tape
                 drive. It is not necessary to use the console drive for
                 this installation. However, if you do use the console
                 drive, you should replace any media you removed once the
                 installation is complete.

                 OPTIONS N
                 An optional parameter that indicates you want to see
                 the question on release notes. If you do not include the
                 OPTIONS N parameter, VMSINSTAL does not ask you about
                 the release notes. You should review the release notes
                 before proceeding with the installation in case they

                 contain additional information about the installation.
                 If you are restarting the installation and have already
                 reviewed the release notes, you do not need to specify
                 OPTIONS N.

                 Note that there are several other options you can select
                 when you invoke VMSINSTAL:

                 o  Auto-answer option (A): Initially creates a file
                    that contains your answers to VMSINSTAL questions and
                    prompts. You can then use the option (and the answer
                    file) to save time during a reinstallation (typically
                    after upgrading your system).

                 o Get save set option (G): Lets you store product save
                    sets temporarily on a magnetic tape or in a disk
                    directory.

                 o File log option (L): Logs all activity to the
                    terminal during installation.

                 o Alternate root option (R): Lets you install the
                    product to a system root other than that of the
                    running system.

                 See the VMS documentation on software installation
                 in the VMS System Management Subkit for detailed
                 information on these options. If you specify more than
                 one option, separate the options with commas (OPTIONS
                 A,N).

                 The following example invokes VMSINSTAL to install DEC
                 InfoServer Client Software for VMS from tape drive MTA0:
                 and shows the system response. This example uses the
                 OPTIONS N release note parameter.

                 If you do not supply either the product name or the
                 device name, VMSINSTAL prompts you for this information
                 later in the installation procedure. VMSINSTAL does
                 not prompt you for any options, so be sure to include
                 OPTIONS N on the VMSINSTAL command line to access the
                 release notes during the installation.

                 and displays a list of all active processes. It then
                 asks if you want to continue the installation. You
                 should install DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS
                 on a standalone system or cluster with DECnet shut down.
                 NO is the default response to the question.

                 If you are installing on VMS Version 5.2 or higher,
                 VMSINSTAL does not check the DECnet status. You can
                 install DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS while
                 DECnet is up and running.

              3. Confirm system backup.

                 * Are you satisfied with the backup of your system disk [YES]?

                 VMSINSTAL asks if you are satisfied with your system
                 backup. You should always back up your system disk
                 before performing an installation. If you are satisfied
                 with the backup of your system disk, press the
                 Return key. Otherwise, enter NO to discontinue the
                 installation. After you back up your system disk, you
                 can restart the installation.

              4. Mount the media.

                 Please mount the first volume of the set on MTA0:.
                 * Are you ready? YES
                 %MOUNT-I-MOUNTED, ESS MOUNTED ON _$$MTA0:  (NODE1)

                 %VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product saveset A...

                 You should now mount the first distribution volume on
                 the device you specified when you invoked VMSINSTAL. The
                 device name appears in the line preceding the question.
                 VMSINSTAL then asks you if you are ready to continue
                 with the installation.

                 If you respond YES to indicate that you are ready,
                 VMSINSTAL displays a message that the media containing
                 DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS has been mounted
                 on the specified device and that the installation has
                 begun.

                 If you entered the wrong device name when you invoked
                 VMSINSTAL and need to restart the installation, enter NO
                 in response to the "Are you ready?" question. To abort
                 the installation for other reasons, press Ctrl/Y.

              5. Mount additional media volumes.

                 %BACKUP-I-READYREAD, mount volume 2 on _MTA0: for reading

                 Enter "YES" when ready:

                 VMSINSTAL prompts you to mount the additional volumes
                 and then asks you to indicate that you are ready for the
                 installation to proceed.

              6. Select a release notes option.

                 If you specified OPTIONS N when you started the
                 installation, VMSINSTAL asks a question on release
                 notes. You have five options for handling the release
                 notes under VMS Versions 5.0 and 5.1. There are only
                 four options under VMS Version 5.2 or higher.

                 For VMS Versions 5.0 and 5.1, you see the following
                 display:

                 Release Notes Options:

                  1.  Display release notes
                  2.  Print release notes
                  3.  Both 1 and 2
                  4. Copy release notes to SYS$HELP
                  5. Do not display, print or copy release notes

                 * Select option [2]:

                 For VMS Version 5.2 or higher, you see the following
                 display:

                 Release notes included with this kit are always copied to SYS$HELP.

                 Additional Release Notes Options:

                  1.  Display release notes
                  2.  Print release notes
                  3.  Both 1 and 2
                  4.  None of the above

                 * Select option [2]:

                 If you select option 1, VMSINSTAL displays the release
                 notes immediately on the console terminal. You can
                 terminate the display at any time by pressing Ctrl/C.

                 If you select option 2, VMSINSTAL prompts you for the
                 name of the print queue:

                 * Queue name [SYS$PRINT]:

                 You can press the Return key to send the file to the
                 default output print device or you can enter another
                 queue name.

                 If you select option 3, VMSINSTAL displays the release
                 notes immediately on the console terminal and then
                 prompts you for a queue name for the printed version.

                 Option 4 under VMS Versions 5.0 and 5.1 causes the
                 installation to copy the release notes to the system
                 help directory. Under VMS V5.2 or higher, release notes
                 are always copied to the system help directory.

                 Select option 4 (VMS Version 5.2 or higher) or option
                 5 (VMS Version 5.0 or 5.1) if you reviewed the release

                 Note that hardcopy release notes are included as
                 Appendix C in this document.

                 Next, VMSINSTAL displays the following question:

                 * Do you want to continue the installation [N]?: YES
                 %VMSINSTAL-I-RELMOVED, The product's release notes have been
                                                    successfully moved to SYS$HELP.

                 To continue the installation, enter YES. Otherwise,
                 press the Return key. In either case, the release notes
                 are copied to a file in the SYS$HELP directory:

                 SYS$HELP:ESS010.RELEASE_NOTES

                 After the installation, you can enter the following
                 command to review the release notes.

                 $ TYPE SYS$HELP:ESS010.RELEASE_NOTES

                ________________________ Note ________________________

                The name of the release notes file installed by
                VMSINSTAL consists of the current product name and
                version number. Do not delete release notes for
                previous versions of DEC InfoServer Client Software
                for VMS.

              7. Purge files.

                 * Do you want to purge files replaced by this installation [YES]?

                 You have the option to purge files from previous
                 versions of DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS
                 that are superseded by this installation. Purging is
                 recommended; however, if you need to keep files from the
                 previous version, enter NO in response to the question.

              8. Choose the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP)
                 option.

                 * Do you want to run the IVP after the installation [YES]?

                 The installation procedure now asks if you want to run
                 the IVP. The IVP for DEC InfoServer Client Software
                 for VMS checks to be sure that the installation is
                 successful. It is recommended that you run the IVP.

                 After DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS is
                 installed, you can run the IVP independently to verify
                 that the software is available on your system. You might
                 need to run the IVP after a system failure to make sure
                 that users can access DEC InfoServer Client Software for
                 VMS.

              9. Read informational messages.

                 At this point, the installation procedure displays a
                 number of informational messages that report on the
                 progress of the installation. There are no further
                 questions. If the installation procedure has been
                 successful up to this point, VMSINSTAL moves the new
                 or modified files to their target directories, updates
                 help files, and updates DCL tables, if necessary. If you
                 chose to have files purged, that work is done now. The
                 following messages are displayed:

                 %VMSINSTAL-I-MOVEFILES, files will now be moved to their target
                                                    directories...

              10.Observe the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP).

                 If you chose to run the IVP, VMSINSTAL runs it now.
                 When the IVP runs successfully, you see the following
                 display:

                                                       2.2 Error Recovery

        2.2 Error Recovery

              If errors occur during the installation itself or when
              the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) is running,
              VMSINSTAL displays failure messages. If the installation
              fails, you see the following message:

              %VMSINSTAL-E-INSFAIL, The installation of ESS V1.0 has failed.

              If the IVP fails, you see these messages:

              The DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS V1.0 IVP has failed.
              Check the console and SYS$MANAGER:ESS$STARTUP.LOG for diagnostic messages.
              The most common problem is that the SYSGEN parameter SCSNODE is blank.

              Errors can occur during the installation if any of the
              following conditions exist:

              o The operating system version is incorrect.

              o A prerequisite software version is incorrect.

              o Quotas necessary for successful installation are
                 insufficient.

              o System parameter values for successful installation are
                 insufficient.

              o The VMS help library is currently in use.

              o The product license has not been registered and loaded.

              For descriptions of the error messages generated by these
              conditions, see the VMS documentation on system messages,
              recovery procedures, and VMS software installation. If
              you are notified that any of these conditions exist, you
              should take the appropriate action as described in the
              message. For information on installation requirements, see
              Chapter 1.

                  After Installing DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS

              The following tasks take place after installing DEC
              InfoServer Client Software for VMS:

              o Running the Installation Verification Procedure
                 separately.

              o Editing the system startup and shutdown files.

              o Making the product usable on a VAXcluster.

              o  Setting user account quotas.

              o  Reporting problems.

        3.1 Running the Installation Verification Procedure Separately

              You usually run the Installation Verification Procedure
              (IVP) during installation. If you want to run the IVP
              separately to ensure the integrity of installed files
              should system problems occur, execute the following command
              procedure:

              $ @SYS$TEST:ESS010_IVP

        3.2 Editing the System Files

              You must edit the system startup files to provide for
              automatic startup and shutdown of DEC InfoServer Client
              Software for VMS when your system is rebooted.

              Add the command line that starts DEC InfoServer
              Client Software for VMS to the system startup file,
              SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM. You must position this new
              command line after the line that invokes the DECnet network
              startup command procedure. The following example shows the
              network startup command line followed by the DEC InfoServer
              Client Software for VMS startup command line:

              $ @SYS$MANAGER:STARTNET
                   .
                   .
                   .
              $ @SYS$STARTUP:ESS$STARTUP CLIENT

        After Installing DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS
        3.2 Editing the System Files

        3.2.1 Startup Restrictions: PCSA and RSM

              If PCSA or RSM or both are installed, the DEC InfoServer
              Client Software for VMS startup must be run before the
              startup for PCSA or RSM or both.

              $ @SYS$MANAGER:STARTNET
                   .
                   .
                   .
              $ @SYS$STARTUP:ESS$STARTUP CLIENT
              $ @SYS$STARTUP:RSM$SERVER_STARTUP
              $ @SYS$STARTUP:PCFS_STARTUP

              The DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS provides device
              drivers and control programs that are shared by both
              the PCSA and RSM products. All of the components of the
              DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS are prefixed with
              ESS$. The drivers and control programs provided in the DEC
              InfoServer Client Software for VMS provide all necessary
              support for both PCSA and RSM in addition to InfoServer
              Client support. It is necessary that the DEC InfoServer
              Client Software for VMS startup be executed in the site-
              specific startup before either the PCSA or RSM startup
              procedures. If the DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS
              is started after either the PCSA or RSM startup procedure
              is run, the startup will fail with an informational message
              indicating the file or files in conflict.

              $ @SYS$STARTUP:ESS$STARTUP CLIENT

               Device LAST using driver LASTDRIVER.

               Device LAD using driver LADDRIVER.

              %SYSTEM-E-UNSUPPORTED, unsupported operation or function

              A message indicating that the client was not started will
              also be sent to the console.

              %ESS-I-OLDVER Check SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSMGR]ESS$STARTUP.LOG;1 for errors.

        3.2.2 Startup Restrictions: SYSMAN

              The startup for DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS from
              a subprocess will fail. Because the VMS System Management
              Utility (SYSMAN) uses subprocesses to complete its tasks
              on remote nodes, SYSMAN cannot be used to execute the
              SYS$STARTUP:ESS$STARTUP procedure.

                                            3.3 VAXcluster Considerations

        3.3 VAXcluster Considerations

              DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS supplies a new
              version of SYS$SHARE:MOUNTSHR.EXE that is an installed
              image. Before the DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS
              is started, this image will need to be replaced on all
              nodes in the cluster. A command file that uses SYSMAN
              to perform this operation on all nodes in a cluster has
              been provided with the kit and placed in SYS$UPDATE. The
              procedure needs to be executed from an account with at
              least CMKRNL privilege. To execute the procedure, enter the
              following command:

              $ @SYS$UPDATE:ESS$CLUSTER_INSTALL_MOUNT

        3.4 User Account Requirements

              To work with DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS, user
              accounts on your system must have certain privileges and
              quotas. The next two sections contain information on these
              requirements.

        3.4.1 Privileges

              To use DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS, a user needs
              GRPNAM privilege if the /GROUP qualifier of the LAD Control
              Program (LADCP) BIND command is used and SYSNAM privilege
              is required if the /SYSTEM qualifier of the LADCP BIND
              command is used.

        3.4.2 User Account Quotas

              To use DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS, the UAF
              account quotas that are in the DEFAULT UAF record are the
              minimum values.

              See Section 1.4.2 for a description of how to verify and
              change account quotas.

        3.5 Determining and Reporting Problems

              If you encounter a problem while using DEC InfoServer
              Client Software for VMS, report it to Digital. Depending
              on the nature of the problem and the type of support you
              have, you can take one of the following actions:

              o Call Digital if your software contract or warranty
                 agreement entitles you to telephone support.

              o Submit a Software Performance Report (SPR).

              o Fill out and submit a Reader's Comments form if the
                 problem has to do with the DEC InfoServer Client
                 Software for VMS documentation. There are Reader's
                 Comments forms at the back of each manual. Use the form
                 from the manual in which you found the error. Include
                 the section and page number.

                                        Sample Installation: Run-Time Kit

              This appendix contains a sample installation of DEC
              InfoServer Client Software for VMS. This sample was run
              on a system that had no previous version of DEC InfoServer
              Client Software for VMS installed. Depending on which
              layered products you have on your system, you might see
              additional messages and questions when you perform your
              installation.

              The sample installation assumes that your DECnet network
              is up, that no users are logged on to your system, and that
              OPTIONS N is specified to print the release notes.

                  After this installation completes, be sure to edit SYSTARTUP_V5.COM to
                  invoke

                  $@SYS$STARTUP:ESS$STARTUP.COM

                  to start the protocols. If this is executed before DECnet is started
                  with STARTNET.COM, then the SYSGEN parameter SCSSYSTEMID must be set up
                  correctly to allow DECnet to start normally. If this parameter is zero,
                  then execute ESS$STARTUP after STARTNET. If you do not start DECnet be
                  sure that the SYSGEN parameter SCSNODE is non-blank or the LAST
                  transport will not be able to start.

                  You may also want to execute ESS$STARTUP when the kit installation
                  completes to be able to access the network CD-ROMs without rebooting.

                  Another command procedure template is provided:

                  SYS$MANAGER:ESS$MOUNT.TEMPLATE

                  This file contains sample commands neccessary to make the CD-ROMs
                  available as local disks. Use this as a guide to create the command
                  file:

                  SYS$MANAGER:ESS$MOUNT.COM

                  You may then execute the procedure at the end of the installation to
                  make use of the network CD-ROMs. After this installation completes, be
                  sure to edit SYSTARTUP_V5.COM to invoke

                  $@SYS$MANAGER:ESS$MOUNT.COM

                  If this system has RSM or PCSA or both installed, be sure to read the
                  Install Guide that came with this product for IMPORTANT startup ordering
                  information. If you install either PCSA or RSM after this kit has been
                  installed, it may be necessary to re-install this kit. See the Install
                  Guide for this product for specific information.

                  A new version of MOUNTSHR.EXE has been provided and installed as part of
                  this installation. If you are installing this kit on a cluster, you
                  will need to install the new MOUNTSHR.EXE on each member of the cluster.
                  A command procedure, ESS$CLUSTER_INSTALL_MOUNT.COM has been provided in
                  SYS$UPDATE to accomplish this. If you are installing this kit on a
                  cluster, please execute the command:

                  $ @SYS$UPDATE:ESS$CLUSTER_INSTALL_MOUNT.COM

                  when the installation completes. This procedure uses SYSMAN to re-
                  install MOUNTSHR on every node in the cluster; you need only execute the
                  procedure on your local node.

        B.2 Logical Names

              DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS creates logical
              names in the appropriate table whenever the LADCP bind
              command is executed. In order to place logical names in
              any table other than the process table, the appropriate
              privileges are required. See Section 3.4.1 for the specific
              requirements.

              Creating a logical in the process table:

              $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:ESS$LADCP
              LADCP>BIND CDDOC05SEP01
              %LADCP-I-BIND, service bound to logical unit DAD$CDDOC05SEP01 (_DAD20:)
              LADCP>EXIT
              $ SHOW LOGICAL/FULL DAD$CDDOC05SEP01
                 "DAD$CDDOC05SEP01" [super] = "_DAD20:" [concealed] (LNM$PROCESS_TABLE)

              Creating a logical in the group table:

              $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:ESS$LADCP
              LADCP>BIND/GROUP CDDOC05SEP01
              %LADCP-I-BIND, service bound to logical unit DAD$CDDOC05SEP01 (_DAD21:)
              LADCP>EXIT
              $ SHOW LOGICAL/FULL DAD$CDDOC05SEP01
                 "DAD$CDDOC05SEP01" [super] = "_DAD21:" [concealed] (LNM$GROUP_000104)

              Creating a logical in the system table:

              $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:ESS$LADCP
              LADCP>BIND/SYSTEM CDDOC05SEP01
              %LADCP-I-BIND, service bound to logical unit DAD$CDDOC05SEP01 (_DAD22:)
              LADCP>EXIT
              $ SHOW LOGICAL/FULL DAD$CDDOC05SEP01
                 "DAD$CDDOC05SEP01" [exec] = "_DAD22:" [concealed] (LNM$SYSTEM_TABLE)

                                                            Release Notes

              The DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS provides a VAX
              system running VMS Version 5.0 to Version 5.3-2 software
              the capability to access the virtual disk services of an
              InfoServer 100.

        C.1 Overview of the InfoServer 100

              The InfoServer 100 is an Ethernet-based, high performance
              virtual disk server. Physical disk media and sets of
              logical disk blocks can be served to the network by
              the InfoServer. Host systems running the appropriate
              client software can connect to virtual disks served by
              the InfoServer 100, and utilize them as though they were
              locally attached devices.

              The InfoServer 100 is a virtual disk server. Unlike a file
              server, the InfoServer does not impose a file system on
              the virtual disks that it serves. This means that the
              InfoServer can serve a disk with any type of on-disk
              file structure. The client system interprets the on-disk
              structure itself, allowing any client system to access
              the served disk using a native file system. Multiple on-
              disk structures can be served on a single InfoServer 100
              simultaneously.

              One of the primary functions of the InfoServer 100 is to
              make CD-ROMs available to clients on the network. The
              InfoServer will automatically serve CD-ROMs under their
              volume labels when the server is booted, or when CD-ROMs
              are inserted into their drives. No management action needs
              to be taken on the InfoServer. Client systems simply bind
              to and mount the CD-ROMs under their volume labels. The
              InfoServer is capable of automatically serving CD-ROMs
              that are ODS-2, ISO-9660, or High Sierra format. Other
              media types can be served manually through the InfoServer
              management interface.

              The InfoServer 100 can also serve read/write disk
              partitions. A partition is a logical subset of a read/write
              disk. A single disk can be subdivided into several
              partitions, each of which can be served to the network
              independently. These partitions appear to be whole disks to
              the remote client systems. For example, an MS-DOS personal
              computer utilizing the PCSA product can access InfoServer
              partitions, and use them as though they were a local hard
              disk.

        Release Notes
        C.2 VMS Upgrade Considerations

        C.2 VMS Upgrade Considerations

              The DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS will install on
              all released versions of VMS from Version 5.0 to Version
              5.3-2. The kit will have to be re-installed if a system is
              upgraded within the range of supported versions. With VMS
              V5.4 and all subsequent versions, the InfoServer Client
              Software is an integral part of the base VMS operating
              system.

              If you install VMS Services for PCs (PCSA) or Remote System
              Manager (RSM) after the DEC InfoServer Client Software for
              VMS has been installed, you will need to re-install the DEC
              InfoServer Client Software for VMS. This is necessary to
              ensure that the proper versions of the control programs are
              in place.

        C.3 VAXcluster Restrictions

              The virtual disks created by the DEC InfoServer Client
              Software for VMS cannot be mounted with the /CLUSTER
              qualifier in the Mount Utility. An attempt to use this
              qualifier will cause the mount to fail, as in the following
              example:

              $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:ESS$LADCP
              LADCP> BIND CD_BIN_00121
              %LADCP-I-BIND, service bound to logical unit DAD$CD_BIN_00121 (_DAD7:)
              LADCP>  EXIT
              $ MOUNT/CLUSTER DAD7: CD_BIN_00121
              %MOUNT-F-NOTACLU, _DAD7: (NODE1) is not a cluster-wide device

              It is therefore necessary to execute the client startup
              procedure and the ESS$MOUNT procedure on all VAXcluster
              nodes that will require access to InfoServer disks.

        C.4 Upgrading to VMS V5.4 from an InfoServer

              The DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS will enable the
              system disk on which it is installed to be upgraded to VMS
              V5.4 from the VMS V5.4 CD-ROM served by an InfoServer. Once
              a system is upgraded to V5.4, it is no longer necessary to
              install the DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS because
              the InfoServer Client is an integral part of VMS V5.4.

              To perform the upgrade, the target system must have the
              DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS installed and meet
              the disk space requirements as detailed in the VMS V5.4
              installation guide. The VMS V5.4 CD-ROM must be served
              from an available InfoServer. You must also ensure that the
              SYSGEN parameter SCSNODE is non-blank on the system to be
              upgraded.

              Once the system has been properly prepared, follow the
              V5.4 guidelines to the step where the device containing the
              distribution medium is to be configured. The DEC InfoServer
              Client Software for VMS requires that the Ethernet device
              be configured:

                                                            Release Notes
                             C.4 Upgrading to VMS V5.4 from an InfoServer

              $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSGEN
              SYSGEN> AUTOCONFIGURE ALL
              SYSGEN> EXIT

              You must now load the DEC InfoServer Client Software for
              VMS by invoking the DEC InfoServer Client Software for VMS
              startup procedure:

              $ @SYS$STARTUP:ESS$STARTUP CLIENT
              %LASTCP-I-VERSION, LASTDRIVER X1.5 is stopped
              %LASTCP-I-ADAPINIT, Initializing adapter ESA1: for LASTDRIVER
              %LASTCP-I-STARTED, LASTDRIVER X1.5 started on node NODE1

              To verify that the VMS V5.4 CD-ROM is being served, you can
              perform the following command:

              $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:ESS$LADCP
              LADCP> SHOW SERVICE
              Interrogating network, please wait...

              Services offered by node ESS_TST (LAD V3.0, Address: 08-00-2B-15-05-89)
                                                                          Current   Writes
              Service:                                Device:    Rating: Connects: Allowed?:
              VMS054                                   RRD40      65007       2     No

              If the service VMS054 is available, you can bind to the
              service and mount the virtual device:

              $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:ESS$LADCP
              LADCP> BIND VMS054
              %LADCP-I-BIND, service bound to logical unit DAD$VMS054 (_DAD1:)
              LADCP>  EXIT
              $  MOUNT DAD1: VMS054
              %MOUNT-I-WRITELOCK, volume is write locked
              %MOUNT-I-MOUNTED, VMS054       mounted on _DAD1:

              You may now proceed with the installation, specifying the
              [000000] directory of the DAD device that was just mounted
              as the distribution volume location:

              $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL
