          ________________________________________________________________

This document describes how to install VAX DOCUMENT Version
2.0 on the VMS operating system. This document applies to
VAX DOCUMENT Version 2.0 and all maintenance updates in that
version. A major version number is represented by the digits
to the left of the decimal point, and the maintenance update
number is indicated by the digits to the right of the decimal
             point.

Keep this document with your distribution kit. You will
need it to install maintenance updates or to reinstall VAX
             DOCUMENT.

At the back of this document are two Reader's Comments forms.
If you have any comments about this document, fill out one
form and mail it; your comments will be considered for the
next revision of the installation guide.

This installation procedure is described step-by-step and is,
for the most part, self-explanitory. The system prompts you
to answer questions and to change volumes, and waits for you
             to tell it to continue.

Default replies to installation queries appear in brackets
             ([]) throughout the installation procedure.

                                                                         v

          Conventions

This manual uses the following conventions:

Color Color in examples shows user input.

$ The dollar sign represents the VMS system
prompt. This symbol indicates that the VMS
command interpreter is ready for input.

[] Default replies to installation queries ap-
pear in brackets throughout the installation
                           procedure.

. A vertical ellipsis in an example means that
. information not directly related to the example
          . has been omitted.

                                                                       vii

                                                                 Chapter 1

                                         Preparing to Install VAX DOCUMENT
          ________________________________________________________________

This chapter discusses the preparations and requirements
necessary for installing VAX DOCUMENT Version 2.0.

This manual applies to Version 2.0 of VAX DOCUMENT and all
subsequent maintenance releases up to the next major product
             release.

                                          NOTE

At the beginning of the installation, VMSINSTAL asks
if you have backed up your system disk. DIGITAL
recommends that you do a system disk backup before
                 installing any software.

Use the backup procedures that are established at
your site. For details on performing a system disk
backup, see the section on the Backup Utility in the
                 VMS System Management Subkit.

Your bill of materials (BOM) and indented bills report (BIL)
specify the number and contents of your media. Be sure to
verify the contents of your kit with this information. If
your kit is damaged, or if you find that parts of it are
             missing, contact your DIGITAL representative.

VAX DOCUMENT provides release notes on line and in hard copy.
The online release notes are the most current. You can read
the release notes before you install VAX DOCUMENT and at
any time after the product is installed. DIGITAL strongly
recommends that you read the release notes before proceeding
with the installation. For information on accessing the
online release notes, see step 4 in Chapter 2.

          Required Operating System Components

The VMS operating system comes with a variety of support
options, or classes. Classes include such features as net-
             working and RMS journaling.

For a complete list of the required classes, see the Software
Support Addendum (SSA), which comes with the Software Product
             Description (SPD).

          __________________________________________________________

          Prerequisite and Optional Software

Please refer to the System Software Addendum (SSA) for a
complete list of compatible products and their required
version numbers. The SSA is part of the Software Product
             Description (SPD).

          __________________________________________________________

          License Registration

You must register the VAX DOCUMENT license through the VMS
License Management Facility (LMF) in accordance with the
license agreement signed by your site. The license regis-
tration information you need is contained in the Product
Authorization Key (PAK) that is shipped with VAX DOCUMENT.
The PAK is a paper certificate that contains information
about the license you have to run a particular piece of
             software.

1-2 Preparing to Install VAX DOCUMENT

During the installation, the system asks whether you have
registered the VAX DOCUMENT license and loaded the appro-
priate authorization key. You must register and load your
license for VAX DOCUMENT before you start the installation in
order to run the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP)
             and use the software.

To register a license under VMS, first log in to the system
manager's account, SYSTEM. You then have a choice of two ways
             to perform the registration:

o Invoke the SYS$UPDATE:VMSLICENSE.COM procedure. When it
prompts you for information, respond with data from your
                Product Authorization Key (PAK).

o At the DCL prompt, issue the LICENSE REGISTER command
with the appropriate qualifiers that correspond to PAK
                information.

If you plan to use VAX DOCUMENT on more than one node in
a VAXcluster, you will need to perform a license load on
the other nodes after you complete this installation. See
Installing VAX DOCUMENT on a VAXcluster in Chapter 2.

For complete information on using LMF, see the information on
the License Management Utility in the VMS documentation set.

          Privileges

To install VAX DOCUMENT, you must be logged in to an account
that has SETPRV or at least the following privileges:

              o CMKRNL

              o WORLD

              o SYSPRV

o 40,000 blocks of free disk space, minimum, during instal-
lation, and 26,600 blocks of disk space after installation

Note that VMSINSTAL turns off BYPASS privilege at the start
             of the installation.

          __________________________________________________________

          Disk Space

Installing VAX DOCUMENT requires a certain amount of disk
storage space during the installation. Once VAX DOCUMENT
is installed, less storage space is required. The space
requirements are specified in the following table.

          User Account Privileges and Quotas

To use VAX DOCUMENT, each account must have TMPMBX and NETMBX
privileges and the following minimum quotas:

             Open file quota 30
             (FILLM)

             Page file quota 25,000
             (PGFLQUOTA)

             AST limit (ASTLM) 24

             Buffered I/O count 18
             limit (BIOLM)

             Buffered I/O byte 18,000
             limit (BYTLM)

             Direct I/O quota 18
             (DIOLM)

             Enqueue quota 30
             (ENQLM)

                                          NOTE

An open file limit (FILLM) value of 20 is adequate
only for the installation of VAX DOCUMENT. The
FILLM value must be 30 or greater in order to run
VAX DOCUMENT after installation and to execute the
Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) (which runs
VAX DOCUMENT). DIGITAL recommends that you increase
your FILLM value to 30 so the IVP can be executed as
                 part of the installation procedure.

A page file quota (PGFLQUOTA) of 10,000 is ade-
quate for only the installation of VAX DOCUMENT. The
PGFLQUOTA value must be 25,000 or greater to run VAX
DOCUMENT after installation and to execute the IVP
(which runs VAX DOCUMENT). DIGITAL recommends that you
increase your PGFLQUOTA value to 25,000 so the IVP can
be executed as part of the installation procedure.

You can check the limits set for your process by executing
             the following command:

               $ SHOW PROCESS/QUOTAS

User account quotas are stored in the file SYSUAF.DAT. Use
the VMS Authorize Utility to verify and change user account
quotas. First, set your directory to SYS$SYSTEM and then run
             AUTHORIZE:

               $ SET DEFAULT SYS$SYSTEM
               $ RUN AUTHORIZE
               UAF>

At the UAF> prompt, use the SHOW command with an account name
to check a particular account. For example:

               UAF> SHOW SMITH

To change a quota, use the MODIFY command. MODIFY has the
             following format:

                      MODIFY account-name /quota-name=NNN

The following example changes the FILLM quota for the SMITH
account and then exits from the utility:

               UAF> MODIFY SMITH /FILLM=30
               UAF> EXIT

After you exit from the utility, the system displays messages
indicating whether or not changes were made. Once the changes
have been made, you must log out and log in again for the new
             quotas to take effect.

          ________________________________________________________________

This chapter explains how to install VAX DOCUMENT Version
2.0 using VMSINSTAL, a command procedure that installs VAX
             DOCUMENT.

          __________________________________________________________

          Installation Procedure

The following sections describe each step of the installation
procedure. Once you invoke VMSINSTAL in step 2, you can enter
a question mark at any time for help.

A default response appears in brackets throughout the instal-
lation procedure; for example, [YES]. If you want to give the
default response, press the RETURN key.

To abort the installation procedure at any time, press
CTRL/Y. If you press CTRL/Y, the installation procedure
deletes all files it has created up to that point and re-
turns you to DCL level. If you want to retry the installation
procedure after pressing CTRL/Y, you must proceed from step
             2.

          __________________________________________________________

          Installation Steps

The following steps lead you through the installation proce-
             dure:

Step 1: Log in to a privileged account and set your default
             device and directory to SYS$UPDATE.

               Username: SYSTEM <RETURN>
               Password: <RETURN>
               $ SET DEFAULT SYS$UPDATE <RETURN>

             Step 2: Invoke VMSINSTAL.

When you invoke VMSINSTAL, it checks the following:

o Whether you have set your default device and directory to
                SYS$UPDATE

o Whether you are logged in to a privileged account

o Whether you have adequate quotas for installation

              o Whether DECnet is running

o Whether any users are logged in to the system

If VMSINSTAL detects any problems during the installation,
it notifies you and asks if you want to continue the instal-
lation. In some instances, you can enter YES to continue. To
stop the installation process and correct the situation, en-
ter NO or press RETURN. Then correct the problem and restart
             the installation.

To invoke VMSINSTAL, go to the directory SYS$UPDATE and type
             the following command:

               $ @VMSINSTAL DOC020 ddcu: OPTIONS N <RETURN>

In this example, DOC020 is the name of the VAX DOCUMENT
savesets to be installed, and ddcu represents the device
on which you have mounted the distribution media.

          2-2 Installing VAX DOCUMENT

If you do not supply the first two parameters, VMSINSTAL
prompts you for the product and device names. If you wish to
be prompted for the product and device names and to display
or print the release notes, type the following:

               $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL "" "" OPTIONS N

OPTIONS N is an optional parameter you should specify if you
want to be prompted to display or print the release notes.
If you do not include the OPTIONS N parameter, VMSINSTAL
does not prompt you to display or print the release notes.
Note that VMSINSTAL permits the use of several other options.
For more information on the other options, refer to your
             processor-specific installation/operations guide.

The installation then continues with the following messages:

VAX/VMS Software Product Installation Procedure V5.3

          It is dd-mmm-yyyy at hh:mm.
Enter a question mark (?) at any time for help.

          * Do you want to continue anyway [NO]? YES <RETURN>
          * Are you satisfied with the backup of your system disk [YES]? YES <RETURN>

You should always back up your system disk before performing
an installation. If you are satisfied with the backup of your
system disk, press RETURN. Otherwise, enter NO to discontinue
the installation. After you back up your system disk, you can
             restart the installation.

Step 3: Mount the first installation kit volume.

You are asked to mount the first installation kit volume.

Please mount the first volume of the set on ddcu:.
               * Are you ready? YES <RETURN>
The following products will be processed:

                 DOC V2.0

Beginning installation of DOC V2.0 at hh:mm

               %VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product saveset A...

To indicate that you want to continue the installation, mount
the installation kit volume, type YES, and then press RETURN.

If you entered the wrong device name when you invoked
VMSINSTAL and need to restart the installation, enter NO
in response to the "Are you ready?" question. To abort the
installation for other reasons, press CTRL/Y.

Step 4: Select a release notes option.

VAX DOCUMENT provides online release notes. You will be able
to choose from the list of release notes options only if you
specified OPTIONS N in step 2.

               Release Notes Options:

                   1. Display release notes
                   2. Print release notes
                   3. Both 1 and 2
                   4. Copy release notes to SYS$HELP
                   5. Do not display, print or copy release notes

               * Select option [2]: 2 <RETURN>

If you select option 1, VMSINSTAL displays the release notes
on line immediately. You can terminate the display at any
             time by pressing CTRL/C.

          2-4 Installing VAX DOCUMENT

DIGITAL recommends that you select option 2. If you select
option 2, VMSINSTAL prompts you for a queue name. Either type
a queue name or press RETURN to send the file to the default
             output print device.

               * Queue name [SYS$PRINT]: SYS$PRINT <RETURN>

If you select option 3, VMSINSTAL displays the release notes
immediately on the console terminal and then prompts you for
a queue name for the printed version.

Option 4 causes the installation to copy the release notes
to the help directory. Even if you do not select op-
tion 4, the release notes for VAX DOCUMENT are copied to
             SYS$HELP:DOC020.RELEASE_NOTES.

Select option 5 if you have already reviewed the release
notes and are restarting the installation.

To obtain the release notes after the installation, type
or print the file SYS$HELP:DOC020.RELEASE_NOTES. Online
help also directs you to the release notes file. After the
             installation, type the following:

               $ HELP DOCUMENT RELEASE_NOTES <RETURN>

Next, VMSINSTAL displays the following prompt:

               * Do you want to continue the installation [N]?: YES <RETURN>
%VMSINSTAL-I-RELMOVED, The product release notes have been successfully
                   moved to SYS$HELP.

If you want to continue the installation, type YES and press
RETURN. If you type NO or press RETURN, VMSINSTAL discon-
tinues the installation. In either case, VMSINSTAL moves the
             release notes to SYS$HELP.

                                          NOTE

This version of the release notes file installed by
VMSINSTAL is labeled with the current product name and
version number, DOC020.RELEASE_NOTES. Take care not

to delete release notes for previous versions of VAX
                 DOCUMENT.

Step 5: Select VAX DOCUMENT authorization key.

To run VAX DOCUMENT, you must have its product authoriza-
tion key registered and loaded. The following message is
             displayed:

In order to run VAX DOCUMENT, you must have its product authorization
                   key registered and loaded. 1

                          Product: DOCUMENT
                          Producer: DEC
                          Version: 2.0
                          Release Date: dd-mmm-yyyy1

               * Does this product have an authorization key registered and loaded?

If you answer YES to the prompt, then the installation con-
tinues with step 6. If you answer NO to the prompt, the
             following message is displayed:

Be sure to register and load the VAX DOCUMENT product authorization key
after this installation has completed and before trying to run VAX DOCUMENT.

%DOC-W-NOIVP, Proceeding with installation of VAX DOCUMENT.
-DOC-W-NOIVP, The Installation Verification Procedure will be bypassed.

%DOC-I-IVPDEFER, DIGITAL recommends that you run the IVP at some point
-DOC-I-IVPDEFER, after the installation. To do this, execute the command
-DOC-I-IVPDEFER, procedure @SYS$TEST:DOC$IVP and respond to the prompts.

At this point, the installation continues with the following
             prompt:

          * Do you want to purge files replaced by this installation [YES]? YES <RETURN>

DIGITAL recommends that you purge the files.

               your PAK.

          2-6 Installing VAX DOCUMENT

             Step 6: Select installation options.

You are presented with a number of installation options.

               * Do you want to run the IVP after the installation [YES]?YES <RETURN>

The Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) runs tests
to check whether the installation procedure was successful.
DIGITAL recommends that you run the IVP. Press RETURN to run
the IVP after the installation. If you do not want to run the
IVP, type NO in response to the prompt.

If you run the IVP, VMSINSTAL checks the open file quota
for your process (FILLM). In order to run the IVP, the open
file quota for the current process must be 30 or greater. If
your open file quota is less than 30, you see the following
             message and prompt:

The open file quota for your process is less than 30. The installation
of VAX DOCUMENT can proceed, but the Installation Verification Procedure
cannot be run unless the open file quota is increased to 30.

You may want to stop installation, run the AUTHORIZE utility to increase
your open file quota, log out and log in, then restart the installation.
If you elect to proceed with the installation without increasing
the open file quota, the IVP will be bypassed.

          * Do you want to proceed with the installation [NO]? NO <RETURN>

Enter NO to terminate the installation so that you can in-
crease the open file quota for your process (refer to the
User Account Quotas and Privileges section for information
on the open file quota). If you type YES, the installation
continues, but the IVP is not run and you are given the fol-
             lowing message:

%DOC-W-NOIVP, Proceeding with installation of VAX DOCUMENT.
-DOC-W-NOIVP, The Installation Verification Procedure will be bypassed.

If your open file quota is already set to 30 or more, the
installation proceeds, without the previous prompt.

                                              Installing VAX DOCUMENT 2-7

If the IVP is not run because you chose not to run the IVP as
part of the installation or because your open file quota is
less than 30, the following message is displayed:

%DOC-I-IVPDEFER, DIGITAL recommends that you run the IVP at some point
-DOC-I-IVPDEFER, after the installation. To do this, execute the command
-DOC-I-IVPDEFER, procedure @SYS$TEST:DOC$IVP and respond to the prompts.

If you decide to bypass the IVP, DIGITAL recommends that
after the installation, you set your open file quota to 30
and then run the IVP. Refer to the Running the Installation
Verification Procedure Independently section for more infor-
             mation.

Step 7: Select a device and directory.

You must specify a storage area for VAX DOCUMENT files. The
             following message is displayed:

You will now be asked where you want the many VAX DOCUMENT files to
be stored. The files will be stored in a directory tree called
            [DOC$TOOLS . . .
] on the device and directory which you shall specify.
A system-wide logical name called DOC$ROOT will be created to refer
            to this directory tree.

If this is a reinstallation of VAX DOCUMENT, the logical
name DOC$ROOT is already defined. If DOC$ROOT is already
defined, you are asked whether you want to restore the
             [DOC$TOOLS . . . ] tree to that device and directory:

The logical name DOC$ROOT is already defined.
It refers to the directory ddcu:[dir].

          * Do you want to install the new files at that same location [YES]? YES <RETURN>

You should install VAX DOCUMENT onto the same device and
directory. If you do not, the existing [DOC$TOOLS . . . ] tree
will not be accessible through the logical name DOC$ROOT.

          2-8 Installing VAX DOCUMENT

If the logical name DOC$ROOT is not currently defined, you
             receive the following prompt:

               * Enter the device and directory where [DOC$TOOLS...] should
                 be created [SYS$SYSDEVICE:[000000]]: SYS$SYSDEVICE:[000000] <RETURN>

Enter the name of the device and directory on which you want
the [DOC$TOOLS...] tree installed, or press the RETURN key to
             install on the system disk.

                                          NOTE

                 The directories SYS$HELP, SYS$LIBRARY, SYS$MANAGER,
                 and SYS$MESSAGE, and all files in the [DOC$TOOLS . . .
] directory tree may contain previous versions of
VAX DOCUMENT files. This may happen if you stop an
installation and then re-start it. Any such files
are replaced during the re-started installation with
new files, but the old files are not automatically
purged. Purging is recommended. In response to a purg-
ing prompt, press RETURN to purge the files or type NO
                 to keep them.

             Step 8: Select LSE support.

If the Language-Sensitive Editor (LSE) is not installed on
your system, you do not receive a prompt for the installation
of SDML with LSE. Instead, you receive an informational
message stating that LSE is not installed.

Support for the use of SDML with LSE cannot be installed because
Version 3.0 or higher of the Language-Sensitive Editor is not
installed on this system. If you want the Language-Sensitive Editor
support you must do the following:

            1. Install the Language-Sensitive Editor Version 3.0 or higher
            2. Set default to the SYS$LIBRARY directory
            3. Link the SDML.ENV file using the following command:

                $ lsedit/nodisp/nosyst/envi=(SDML)/nosect/command=(doc$lseupdate_env.tpu)

                                              Installing VAX DOCUMENT 2-9

This action can be taken any time after this installation is completed.
There is no need to stop the current installation.

If your system has LSE installed, the procedure instead sup-
plies a prompt for the support of SDML with LSE option. You
can choose to install this option or continue the installa-
tion with the prompt for the next option.

VAX DOCUMENT provides support for the preparation of documents that
use the Standard Digital Markup Language (SDML) with the Language-
                 Sensitive Editor (LSE).

               * Do you want support for SDML use with LSE [YES]? YES <RETURN>

Step 9. Select an IVP destination.

If you indicated that you want the IVP executed after instal-
lation, you are asked to specify the command line destination
parameter that corresponds to the device to which you want
to send the output of the DOCUMENT command execution (for
example, PS, LN03, or LINE). You are also asked if you want
the output to be queued automatically to that device.

The IVP will execute a DOCUMENT command. You must supply
the destination parameter for this DOCUMENT command and then
indicate whether you want the output queued automatically.

If you do not have LN03 fonts installed on your system, you
             will receive the following notice:

                 +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
                 ! **** NOTICE **** !
                 ! !
! The IVP for this installation of VAX DOCUMENT should not be !
! run against an LN03 destination until the LN03 fonts are !
! installed. Do not select an LN03 destination for this IVP. !
                 +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
               * Enter the IVP destination parameter: PS

               * Do you want the IVP output queued automatically [YES]? YES
          <RETURN>

               * Enter the printer queue name: queue_name<RETURN>

If you have not set up the printing device, reply NO to this
             prompt.

The VAX DOCUMENT files will now be installed. Your VMS sys-
tem will be updated to include the new or modified files:
             SYS$HELP:DOC020.RELEASE_NOTES

             Step 10. End the installation.

After responding to the last prompt, you see the following
             message:

The VAX DOCUMENT files will be installed. Your VMS system
will be updated to include the new or modified files:

              SYS$HELP:DOC020.RELEASE_NOTES
              SYS$HELP:HELPLIB.HLB
              SYS$SHARE:DCLTABLES.EXE
              SYS$STARTUP:DOC$STARTUP.COM
              SYS$MESSAGE:DOC$MSG.EXE

Upon completion of this installation, please be sure to do the following:

. Edit the system startup file (SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM) so that
it will execute the command @SYS$STARTUP:DOC$STARTUP.COM. This
insures that DOCUMENT will be available after the next system boot.

. If you are on a cluster, you should execute the following commands:

                     $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSMAN
                     SYSMAN> SET ENVIRONMENT/CLUSTER
                     SYSMAN> DO @SYS$STARTUP:DOC$STARTUP.COM
                     SYSMAN> DO INSTALL REPLACE SYS$SHARE:DCLTABLES.EXE
                     SYSMAN> EXIT

This will make VAX DOCUMENT available to all properly licensed
nodes of the cluster prior to the next system boot.

Refer to the Installing VAX DOCUMENT on a VAXcluster section
             for more information.

The installation procedure displays the following message:

End of prompts. Now beginning restoration of savesets.
No further questions will be asked...

Additional messages are displayed as VMSINSTAL restores
backup savesets and creates directories; for example:

          %VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product saveset B ...
             .
             .
             .
          %VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product saveset C ...
             .
             .
             .
          %VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product saveset D ...
             .
             .
             .
%VMSINSTAL-I-MOVEFILES, Files will now be moved to their target directories...

When all the selected features are installed, VMSINSTAL runs
the IVP if you requested it.

The IVP displays the normal information-level messages from
             the execution of VAX DOCUMENT.

If the execution of VAX DOCUMENT fails, you will see the
             following messages:

%DOC-I-IVP_FAILURE, VAX DOCUMENT 2.0 IVP failed.
%VMSINSTAL-E-IVPFAIL, The IVP for DOC 2.0 has failed.

See the section on Error Conditions if you receive this
             message.

If the execution of VAX DOCUMENT succeeds, you will see the
             following messages:

%DOC-I-IVP_SUCCESS, VAX DOCUMENT V2.0 IVP was successful.
Installation of DOCV2.0 completed at hh:mm.

With the successful completion of the IVP, your installation
of VAX DOCUMENT is finished. After the following message is
displayed, log out from the system:

               VMSINSTAL procedure done at hh:mm.
               $ logout <RETURN>

VMSINSTAL deletes or changes entries in the process symbol
tables during the installation. Therefore, if you are going
to continue using the system manager's account and want to
restore those symbols, you should log out and log in again.

Installing VAX DOCUMENT on a VAXcluster

If you want to run VAX DOCUMENT on multiple nodes of a
VAXcluster, first check to see that you have the appropriate
software license. Then, execute the following commands after
             installing VAX DOCUMENT:

               $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSMAN
               SYSMAN> SET ENVIRONMENT/CLUSTER
               SYSMAN> DO @SYS$STARTUP:DOC$STARTUP.COM
               SYSMAN> DO INSTALL REPLACE SYS$SHARE:DCLTABLES.EXE
               SYSMAN> EXIT

For more information about the SYSMAN utility, see the VMS
             SYSMAN Utility Manual.

Determining the Files and Logical Names Added to the System

During the installation, VAX DOCUMENT creates some files and
logical names on your system. See Appendix B for a complete
             list.

Running the Installation Verification Procedure Independently

The Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) is usually run
at installation. If you want to run the IVP independently to
ensure the integrity of installed files if system problems
occur, execute the following command procedure and respond to
             the prompts:

               $ @SYS$TEST:DOC$IVP

               * Enter the destination parameter: PS
               * Do you want the IVP queued automatically [YES]? <RETURN>

If the IVP fails for any reason, the following messages are
             displayed:

%DOC-I-IVP_FAILURE, VAX DOCUMENT V2.0 IVP failed.
%VMSINSTAL-E-IVPFAIL, The IVP for DOC V2.0 has failed.

                                                    After the Installation
          ________________________________________________________________

This chapter explains the necessary tasks to be performed
after the installation of VAX DOCUMENT Version 2.0.

Now that VAX DOCUMENT is installed, it can be invoked by all
users by issuing the DOCUMENT command. The installation pro-
cedure modifies the DCL command table so that the DOCUMENT
command is recognized and processed. The old command table
is still in effect, however, for those users who are cur-
rently logged in. All logged-in users who want to use the VAX
DOCUMENT command must log out of the system and log in again.

          __________________________________________________________

          System-wide Tasks

Perform the following system-wide tasks after the installa-
             tion:

              1. Edit the file SYS$STARTUP:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM to include the
                execution of DOC$STARTUP.COM.

                  $ @SYS$STARTUP:DOC$STARTUP.COM

              2. Verify that all users of VAX DOCUMENT have the requisite
                FILLM and PGFLQUOTA quotas.

              3. If you are on a cluster, perform the steps outlined in the
Installing VAX DOCUMENT on a VAXcluster section.

                                               After the Installation 3-1

The next sections describe additional steps and conditions
that must exist before the system is made available to users.

          __________________________________________________________

          Check Your LN03 Printer

VAX DOCUMENT system support for LN03 output requires that
the LN03 be equipped with a minimum of two LN03X-CR RAM
cartridges to downline load the fonts needed. Without RAM
cartridges, the LN03 has only 27K RAM; each cartridge adds an
             additional 128K.

If the output produced by the LN03 has erratic characteris-
tics (for example, if white space occurs where text should
be) or if the LN03 displays the numbers "2" and "4" on its
LED display while printing the file, you need to order the
cartridges and install them to get LN03 output.

For correct printing of LN03 output files, the terminal queue
characteristics and the device's switch settings must be
verified. Discussion of terminal queue characteristics and
             LN03 bit settings follows.

          __________________________________________________________

          Terminal Queue Characteristics

The following list summarizes the terminal queue characteris-
tics required for correct output of VAX DOCUMENT output files
produced for the LN03. In the following example, TTcn: is the
terminal number of the LN03 printer.

Place the following commands in the system startup file to
             enable the terminal queue:

          3-2 After the Installation

               $ SET TERMINAL TTcn: -
               _$ /SPEED=19200-
               _$ /DEVICE=(LN03)-
               _$ /PERMANENT/NOBROAD/NOECHO/FORM-
               _$ /PAGE=66/NOTYPEAHEAD/WIDTH=80/NOWRAP)
               $ SET DEVICE TTcn:/SPOOLED=(queue-name,SYS$DEVICE:TTcn)
               $ INITIALIZE/QUEUE/START/NOENABLE queue-name/ON=TTcn:

The queue-name is the same queue name specified in the in-
             stallation procedure.

          LN03 Bit Settings

You can determine the bit settings on your LN03 by pressing
the Test Button on the back of the device. The summary sheet
             settings should be as follows:

               S U M M A R Y S H E E T Revision Level DEC004.4

                SWITCH # SETTING MEANING

                 1-1 OFF SERIAL INPUT
                   2 ON
                   3 ON 19200 BAUD

                   3 OFF
                   4 OFF AUTO WRAP OFF
                   5 OFF XON/XOFF ENABLED
                   6 OFF

Note that the revision level must be 004.4 or greater.

An error during the installation can be caused by one or more
             of the following conditions:

              o Insufficient disk space

o Insufficient system virtual page count parameter

              o Insufficient AST quota

o Insufficient buffered I/O byte count

              o Insufficient subprocess quota

              o Insufficient open file quota

o Insufficient process paging file quota

o Insufficient process working set quota

o Insufficient system maximum working set

              o Incorrect version of VMS

For descriptions of the error messages generated by these
conditions, see the VMS System Messages and Recovery
Procedures Reference Volume and your processor-specific
             installation/operations guide.

If you are notified that any of these conditions exist,
you should take the appropriate action, as described in
the message. You may need to change a system parameter or
increase an authorized quota value. For information on re-
quirements, see the Installation Procedure Requirements and
             Using VMSINSTAL sections.

          IVP Error Conditions

If the IVP fails for any reason, you receive VMS system
messages indicating the cause of the error. The most likely
             problem areas are as follows:

o The output queue name is not correctly specified.

o The output device is not correctly set up for printing VAX
                DOCUMENT output.

          __________________________________________________________

          Maintenance Updates

DIGITAL may periodically issue maintenance updates of VAX
DOCUMENT. Each update consists of an installation kit. You
should install this kit as described in this document or in
any documentation that may accompany the maintenance update.

Each time a maintenance update is released, the version
number changes. For example, if the current version is 1.0,
the version number of the first maintenance update is 1.1. In
addition, the maintenance update includes new release notes.
The release notes describe the changes that have been made to
VAX DOCUMENT since the previous release.

The updated release notes are provided on line. You should
read the release notes before you install VAX DOCUMENT; they
are also accessible at any time after the product is in-
stalled. For information on reading the release notes at
the time that you install VAX DOCUMENT, follow the installa-
tion procedure through step 4. To locate the release notes
after VAX DOCUMENT is installed, display or print the file
             SYS$HELP:DOC020.RELEASE_NOTES, or type the following:

          Determining and Reporting Problems

If an error occurs while you are using VAX DOCUMENT and
you believe that the error is caused by a problem with VAX
DOCUMENT, take one of the following actions:

o If you purchased VAX DOCUMENT within the past 90 days
and you think the problem is caused by a software error,
submit a Software Performance Report (SPR).

o If you have a BASIC or DECsupport Software Agreement,
call your Customer Support Center. With these services,
you receive telephone support that provides high-level
advisory and remedial assistance. For more information,
                contact your local DIGITAL representative.

o If you have a Self-Maintenance Software Agreement, submit
                a Software Performance Report (SPR).

If you find an error in the VAX DOCUMENT documentation, you
should fill out and submit one of the Reader's Comments forms
at the back of the document in which the error was found.
Include the section and page number where you found the
             error.

The VAX DOCUMENT files will now be installed. Your VMS system
will be updated to include the new or modified files:

              SYS$HELP:DOC020.RELEASE_NOTES
              SYS$HELP:HELPLIB.HLB

Upon completion of this installation, please be sure to do the following:

. Edit the system startup file (SYS$STARTUP:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM) so that
it will execute the command @SYS$STARTUP:DOC$STARTUP.COM. This
insures that DOCUMENT will be available after the next system boot.

. If you are on a cluster, you should execute the following commands:

                     $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSMAN
                     SYSMAN> SET ENVIRONMENT/CLUSTER

                     SYSMAN> DO INSTALL REPLACE SYS$SHARE:DCLTABLES.EXE
                     SYSMAN> EXIT

This will make VAX DOCUMENT available to all properly licensed
nodes of the cluster prior to the next system boot.
