                                          Preparing to Install DECdesign

This chapter discusses the preparations and requirements
              necessary for installing DECdesign.

Your bill of materials (BOM) and indented bills report
(BIL) specify the number and contents of your media.
Be sure to verify the contents of your kit with this
information. If your kit is damaged or if you find
that parts of it are missing, contact your Digital
              representative.

DECdesign provides online release notes. Digital strongly
recommends that you read the release notes before
proceeding with the installation. For information on
accessing the online release notes, see Section 2.1.

        1.1 Required Operating System Components

The VMS operating system comes with a variety of support
options, or classes. Classes include such features as
networking and RMS journaling. To use DECdesign, your
system should be running a version of VMS that includes
              the following classes:

o VMS classes include the following:

                 _ BASE

                 _ Network Support

                 _ Programming Support

                 _ System Programming Support

                 _ Secure User's Environment

                 _ Utilities

o DECwindows classes include the following:

                 _ DECwindows applications files

_ 75 dots per inch video font files

For a complete list of the required classes, see the
Software Support Addendum (SSA), which comes with the
              Software Product Description (SPD).

        1.2 Prerequisite Hardware

There are no special hardware requirements for installing
              DECdesign.

        1.3 Prerequisite Software

This section discusses the software you must have
installed on your system before installing DECdesign.
The System Software Addendum (SSA) contains a complete
list of prerequisite software and their required version
              numbers.

Before installing DECdesign Version 1.1, ensure that the
folllowing software is already installed on your system:

              o VMS 5.4 or later.

              o CDD/Plus Version 4.3 or later. (CDD/Plus is not
necessary for client-only installations of DECdesign.)
If you already have Version 4.3 or later on your
system, it is not necessary to reinstall it.

o Rdb/VMS Version 4.0 or later. If you already have
Version 4.0 or later on your system, it is not
                 necessary to reinstall it.

If you plan to install DECdesign V1.1 on a system
with CDD Repository V5.0 or higher, the methodology
template libraries provided in the DECdesign V1.1 kit
will not work. You can complete the installation of
DECdesign without the methodology template libraries (the
              installation procedure provides appropriate prompts).
After the installation of DECdesign, you then invoke
an upgrade routine that provides methodology template
libraries compatible with CDD Repository V5.0 or higher.
The upgrade savesets, containing only the methodology
template libraries, are included on the media with CDD
Repository kits for V5.0 or higher.

                                          Preparing to Install DECdesign
                                              1.3 Prerequisite Software

The upgrade contains four savesets: DESCDD.A, DESCDD.B,
DESCDD.C, DESCDD.D. Before invoking the upgrade, please
read the release notes included in saveset A.

If you install new versions of CDD/Plus or Rdb/VMS after
installing DECdesign, you may have to convert the user-
created DECdesign design libraries on your system. For
              more information, see Chapter 3.

1.4 Prerequisites for DECdesign Version 1.0 Users

If you have DECdesign libraries created with Version
1.0, you must extract them before installing Version 1.1.
Additionally, Yourdon libraries must be converted after
the extraction. The procedure for this is described in the
              release notes.

        1.5 License Registration

Before you install and run DECdesign Version 1.1 on a
newly-licensed node or cluster, you must first register a
License Product Authorization Key (License PAK) using the
License Management Facility (LMF). The License PAK may be
shipped along with the kit if you ordered the license and
media together; otherwise, it is shipped separately to a
location based on your license order.

If you are installing DECdesign as an update on a node
or cluster already licensed for this software, you must
upgrade your PAK to reflect licensing changes. There is
a PAK for the entire DECdesign platform and each design
              methodology has its own PAK.

You must register and load your license for DECdesign
before you start the installation in order to run the
Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) and use the
              software.

To register a license under VMS, first log in to the
system manager's account, SYSTEM. You then have a choice
of two ways to perform the registration:

o Invoke the SYS$UPDATE:VMSLICENSE.COM procedure. When
it prompts you for information, respond with data from
                 your License PAK.

        Preparing to Install DECdesign
        1.5 License Registration

o At the DCL prompt, enter the LICENSE REGISTER command
with the appropriate qualifiers that correspond to
                 License PAK information.

If you plan to use DECdesign on more than one node in a
VAXcluster, you will need to perform a license load on
the other nodes after you complete this installation. See
              Section 3.5.

For complete information on using LMF, see the VMS License
              Management Utility Manual.

        1.6 Installation Procedure Requirements

This section and those that follow discuss various
              requirements for installing DECdesign.

The installation takes approximately 20 to 60 minutes,
depending on your type of media and your system configura-
              tion.

Installing DECdesign and running the IVP on a standalone
VAX 3100 system takes 20 minutes.

        1.6.1 Privileges and Disk Space

To install DECdesign, you must be logged in to an account
that has SETPRV or at least the following privileges:

              o CMKRNL

              o WORLD

              o SYSPRV

Note that VMSINSTAL turns off BYPASS privilege at the
              start of the installation.

DECdesign's requirements for free disk storage space are
different during installation and after installation.
Table 1-1 summarizes the storage requirements.

During and after installation, DECdesign requires
certain system parameter settings. Additionally, you can
use system parameters to tune your system for optimal
performance (see Section 3.7 for information). Table 1-2
lists the minimum required system parameter values for
the installation. Depending on the kinds of programs and
applications running at your site, you might need higher
              values for some settings.

              Table_1-2_Minimum_Required_System_Parameter_Values________

install a client-only version of DECdesign because the
client-only version does not use CDD/Plus.
[2 ]The values listed for these system parameters
represent the number of free global pages and global
sections required for the installation, not the total
number you need to run your system and other software.
[3 ]This parameter is discussed further in Section 3.7.
[4 ]You might need to increase this number for the DCL
              tables.

        1.6 Installation Procedure Requirements

        1.6.2.1 Checking System Parameter Values

To check the values of your system parameters, enter the
following command at the DCL prompt to invoke the System
              Generation Utility (SYSGEN):

              $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSGEN
              SYSGEN>

At the SYSGEN> prompt, enter the SHOW command to display
the value of a system parameter. The values displayed
should equal or exceed the value of each system parameter
listed in Table 1-2. The following example displays the
value for the WSMAX system parameter:

              SYSGEN> SHOW WSMAX

After checking the parameters with the SHOW command, enter
the EXIT command at the SYSGEN> prompt to return to DCL
              level.

1.6.2.2 Calculating the Values for GBLPAGES and GBLSECTIONS

To install and run DECdesign, you must have sufficient
free global pages and global sections. You must first find
out how many free global pages and sections you have on
your system. Then use AUTOGEN if you need to increase the
              GLBPAGES and GBLSECTIONS system parameters.

Use the WRITE command with the F$GETSYI lexical function
to find the number of free global pages and global
sections. The following example shows how to get this
information at your terminal (the default for SYS$OUTPUT):

              $ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT F$GETSYI("FREE_GBLPAGES")
              15848
              $ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT F$GETSYI("FREE_GBLSECTS")
              24

If the values displayed by the system are greater than
the values in Table 1-2, you do not need to increase
the values for these parameters. If the value of free
global pages or global sections is less than the value in
Table 1-2, you must increase the system parameter setting.

1.6.2.3 Changing System Parameter Values with AUTOGEN

Use the AUTOGEN command procedure to change system
parameters. AUTOGEN automatically adjusts values for
parameters that are associated with the values you reset
manually. To change system parameters with AUTOGEN, edit
              the following file:

              SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT

Use an editor to access the file. To change a parameter
value listed in this file, delete the current value
associated with that parameter and enter the new value.

To add a new parameter, add a line to the file that
includes both the name of the parameter and its value.
              For example:

              WSMAX = 6000

You can help tune your system by specifying a minimum
value for parameters and letting AUTOGEN decide the most
efficient value at or above the specified amount. To
do this, precede the parameter value with "MIN_". (See
Section 3.7 for advice on minimum settings.) For example:

              MIN_WSMAX = 6000

To modify incremental parameters such as GBLPAGES and
GBLSECTS, use ADD_. The following example increases the
              global page setting by 2000:

              ADD_GBLPAGES = 2000

After you make all your changes, exit from the editor and
execute the AUTOGEN procedure to recalculate your system
parameters. Enter the following command at the DCL prompt:

              $ @SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN GETDATA REBOOT

When you specify REBOOT, AUTOGEN performs an automatic
system shutdown and then reboots the system. Any users
logged on to the system are immediately disconnected
during the shutdown. The automatic reboot puts the new
              parameter values into effect.

        Preparing to Install DECdesign
        1.6 Installation Procedure Requirements

The AUTOGEN Utility automatically adjusts some of the
SYSGEN parameters based on the consumption of resources
since the last reboot. If you do not want to take
advantage of this automatic adjustment, include the
NOFEEDBACK qualifier on the AUTOGEN command line. For
              example:

              $ @SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN GETDATA REBOOT NOFEEDBACK

For more information about using AUTOGEN, see the VMS
              System Management Subkit.

1.6.2.4 Setting Dynamic System Parameter Values

The CLISYMTBL and LOCKIDTBL_MAX parameters in Table 1-2
are dynamic system parameters. Use the System Generation
Utility (SYSGEN) to set dynamic parameters. Dynamic
parameters changed with the SYSGEN WRITE ACTIVE command
become active immediately without any need to reboot your
              system.

Once you change dynamic parameter values, you should
complete the installation before rebooting the system.
After you finish with the installation, you can reset the
dynamic parameters to their previous values or let them be
reset automatically when you next reboot your system.

If the dynamic parameter values on your system are less
than the values previously listed, use the following
series of commands to change the values. This example
changes the CLISYMTBL value to 250.

              $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSGEN
              SYSGEN> USE ACTIVE
              SYSGEN> SET CLISYMTBL 250
              SYSGEN> WRITE ACTIVE
              SYSGEN> EXIT

        1.6.2.5 Tuning The Lock-Related Parameters

During the first few weeks that VAX CDD/Plus is installed,
check the actual number of locks your system is using by
invoking the VMS Monitor Utility (MONITOR):

              $ MONITOR LOCK

This displays the maximum number of locks outstanding
during the monitor period. You can use this value to tune
the LOCKIDTBL_MAX and RESHASHTBL parameters according to
the guidelines shown in Table 1-3.

              Table_1-3_Values_for_Lock_Parameters______________________

              Parameter________Value____________________________________

LOCKIDTBL_MAX This quota must be at least as high
as the highest ENQLM setting in the
                               system authorization file (SYSUAF.DAT).
A larger LOCKIDTBL_MAX is recommended to
allow several processes to use CDD/Plus
                               simultaneously.

RESHASHTBL In general, there should be one resource
hash table entry for every four locks
in the system. Set the resource hash
table parameter equal to the value of
              _________________LOCKIDTBL_MAX_divided_by_four.___________

For a complete description of the MONITOR Utility, see the
VMS Monitor Utility Manual. For more tuning information,
see the Guide to VMS Performance Management.

        1.6.3 Process Account Quotas

The account you use to install DECdesign must have suffi-
cient quotas to enable you to perform the installation.
Table 1-4 summarizes the process quotas required for the
              installation account.

User account quotas are stored in the file SYSUAF.DAT.
Use the VMS Authorize Utility (AUTHORIZE) to verify and
change user account quotas. First set your directory to
              SYS$SYSTEM and then run AUTHORIZE:

              $ SET DEFAULT SYS$SYSTEM
              $ RUN AUTHORIZE
              UAF>

At the UAF> prompt, enter the SHOW command with an account
name to check a particular account. For example:

              UAF> SHOW SMITH

To change a quota, enter the MODIFY command. The following
example changes the FILLM quota for the SMITH account and
              then exits from the utility:

              UAF> MODIFY SMITH /FILLM=50
              UAF> EXIT

After you exit from the utility, the system displays
messages indicating whether or not changes were made.
Once the changes have been made, you must log out and log
in again for the new quotas to take effect.

For more information on modifying account quotas, see the
description of the Authorize Utility in the VMS System
              Management Subkit.

        1.6.4 VMSINSTAL Requirements

When you invoke VMSINSTAL, it checks the following:

o Whether you are logged in to a privileged account

o Whether you have adequate quotas for installation

              o Whether DECnet is running

o Whether any users are logged in to the system

If VMSINSTAL detects any problems during the installation,
it notifies you and asks if you want to continue the
installation. In some instances, you can enter YES to
continue. To stop the installation process and correct
the situation, enter NO or press Return. Then correct the
              problem and restart the installation.

1.6.5 Backing Up Your System Disk

At the beginning of the installation, VMSINSTAL asks if
you have backed up your system disk. Digital recommends
that you do a system disk backup before installing any
              software.

Use the backup procedures that are established at your
site. For details on performing a system disk backup,
see the section on the Backup Utility in the VMS System
              Management Subkit.

                                                    Installing DECdesign

This chapter explains how to install DECdesign. Section 2.1
contains a step-by-step description of the installation
              procedure.

        2.1 The Installation Procedure

The DECdesign installation procedure consists of a series
of questions and informational messages. See Appendix A
              for a sample installation.

To abort the installation procedure at any time, press
              Ctrl/Y.

              1. Invoke VMSINSTAL.

                 @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL saveset-name device-name OPTIONS
        N

To start the installation, invoke the VMSINSTAL command
procedure from a privileged account, such as the SYSTEM
account. VMSINSTAL is in the SYS$UPDATE directory. The
following list defines the elements of the VMSINSTAL
                 command procedure:

                 saveset-name
The installation name for the component. For DECdesign,
                 use the following installation name:

                 DES011

                 device-name
The name of the device on which you plan to mount the
media. For example, MUA0: is the device name for a tape
drive. It is not necessary to use the console drive for
this installation. However, if you do use the console

        Installing DECdesign
        2.1 The Installation Procedure

                 OPTIONS N
An optional parameter that indicates you want to see
the question on release notes. If you do not include
the OPTIONS N parameter, VMSINSTAL does not ask you
about the release notes. You should review the release
notes before proceeding with the installation in
case they contain additional information about the
installation. If you are restarting the installation
and have already reviewed the release notes, you do not
                 need to specify OPTIONS N.

There are several other options you can select when you
                 invoke VMSINSTAL:

                 o Auto_answer option (A)

Initially creates a file that contains your answers
to VMSINSTALL questions and prompts. You can then
use the option (and the answer file) to save time
during a reinstallation (typically after upgrading
                    your system).

o Get save set option (G)

Lets you store product save sets temporarily on a
magnetic tape or in a disk directory.

                 o File log option (L)

Logs all activity to the terminal during installa-
                    tion.

                 o Alternate root option (R)

Lets you install the product to a system root other
than that of the running system.

See the VMS documentation on software installation
in the VMS System Management Subkit for detailed
information on these options. If you specify more than
one option, separate the options with commas (OPTIONS
                 A,N).

The following example invokes VMSINSTAL to install
DECdesign from tape drive MUA0: and shows the system
response. This example uses the OPTIONS N release note
                 parameter.

Enter a question mark (?) at any time for help.

If you do not supply either the product name or the
device name, VMSINSTAL prompts you for this information
later in the installation procedure. VMSINSTAL does
not prompt you for any options, so be sure to include
OPTIONS N on the VMSINSTAL command line to access the
                 release notes during the installation.

              2. Confirm system backup.

                 * Are you satisfied with the backup of your system disk [YES]?

VMSINSTAL asks if you are satisfied with your system
backup. You should always back up your system disk
before performing an installation. If you are satisfied
with the backup of your system disk, press Return.
Otherwise, enter NO to discontinue the installation.
After you back up your system disk, you can restart the
                 installation.

              3. Mount the media.

Please mount the first volume of the set on MUA0:.
                 * Are you ready? YES

You should now mount the first distribution volume on
the device you specified when you invoked VMSINSTAL.
The device name appears in the line preceding the
question. VMSINSTAL then asks you if you are ready
                 to continue with the installation.

        Installing DECdesign
        2.1 The Installation Procedure

If you respond YES to indicate that you are ready,
VMSINSTAL displays a message that the media containing
DECdesign has been mounted on the specified device and
                 that the installation has begun.

If you entered the wrong device name when you invoked
VMSINSTAL and need to restart the installation, enter
NO in response to the "Are you ready?" question. To
abort the installation for other reasons, press Ctrl/Y.

              4. Mount additional media volumes.

%BACKUP-I-READYREAD, mount volume 2 on _MUA0: for reading

                 Enter "YES" when ready:

If your installation kit contains more than one volume,
VMSINSTAL prompts you to mount the additional volumes
and then asks you to indicate that you are ready for
                 the installation to proceed.

              5. Select a release notes option.

Release notes included with this kit are always copied to SYS$HELP.

                 Additional Release Notes Options:

                  1. Display release notes
                  2. Print release notes
                  3. Both 1 and 2
                  4. None of the above

                 * Select option [2]:

If you specified OPTIONS N when you invoked VMSINSTAL,
you are now asked to choose one of the four options for
                 reviewing the release notes.

If you select option 1, VMSINSTAL displays the release
notes immediately on the console terminal. You can
terminate the display at any time by pressing Ctrl/C.

If you select option 2, VMSINSTAL prompts you for the
name of the print queue that you want to use:

                 * Queue name [SYS$PRINT]:

You can press Return to send the file to the default
output print device or you can enter another queue
                 name.

If you select option 3, VMSINSTAL displays the release
notes immediately on the console terminal and then
prompts you for a queue name for the printed version.

Select option 4 if you have already reviewed the
release notes and are restarting the installation.

Next, VMSINSTAL displays the following question:

                 * Do you want to continue the installation [N]?: YES
%VMSINSTAL-I-RELMOVED, The product's release notes have been
                                                    successfully moved to SYS$HELP.

To continue the installation, enter YES. Otherwise,
press Return. In either case, the release notes are
copied to a file in the SYS$HELP directory:

                 SYS$HELP:DES011.RELEASE_NOTES

After the installation, you can enter the following
command to review the release notes through the Help
                 facility:

                 $ HELP DECDESIGN RELEASE_NOTES

        Installing DECdesign
        2.1 The Installation Procedure

The installation procedure displays an important
message about converting your existing V1.0 libraries,
license information about your product, and then
a question about registering and loading your
                 authorization key for a DECdesign.

If you have not registered and loaded your PAK, you
must answer NO to this question. (The server does not
require a PAK.) You have to register and load your PAK
to successfully complete the installation. If you have
not done so, you should stop the installation, register
and load your PAK, and then restart the installation.

              7. Server Only.

                 * Do you want only the DECdesign Server installed [NO]? NO

If you do not have an authorization key registered and
loaded, the installation procedure asks if you want to
install only the DECdesign server. If all your users
will use the server to access DECdesign libraries, and
there will be no local access, you may wish to install
                 only the server.

DECdesign does not perform a complete installation
of the server. You must perform additional opera-
tions after the installation. For information, see
                 Section 3.3.

              8. Client-only Installation.

                 * Do you wish a CLIENT-ONLY, NO LOCAL ACCESS installation [NO]?

The installation procedure now asks whether you want
to install a client-only image. This image is for a
workstation environment where you wish to run DECdesign
on remote libraries; you will not have local libraries.
This option requires the least amount of resources
(a local copy of CDD/Plus is not required), but does
require that some other node or cluster has a DECdesign
server installed that you will have access to.

              9. DECdesign Server.

                                          2.1 The Installation Procedure

The installation procedure now asks if you want to
install the DECdesign server. If you plan to allow
users from other machines to access DECdesign libraries
on the machine where you are now installing DECdesign,
enter YES. If you plan to use DECdesign only on the
machine where you are installing it, enter NO.

DECdesign does not perform a complete installation
of the server. You must perform additional opera-
tions after the installation. For information, see
                 Section 3.3.

              10.Support Files.

The DES$PREDEFINED directory location is currently defined as:
                                                      SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.DESLIB].
                 * Is this where you'd like it to be placed [YES]? YES

The installation procedure now asks where you want to
store support files and template libraries. The logical
name for the storage directory is DES$PREDEFINED.

The directory and its contents may be placed in
SYS$LIBRARY or on a disk and directory of your choice.
The directory should be on a disk that is always
mounted, and the protection for the directory must
by World:RE. You must pick a directory that can be
used by DECdesign exclusively; that is, a directory
that is currently empty, or does not yet exist. (If the
DES$PREDEFINED directory is not empty, the installation
procedure asks for permission to supersede the existing
                 files.)

              11.Defining DES$PREDEFINED.

If you answered NO to the previous question, the
installation procedure now asks you to define a device
and directory for DES$PREDEFINED. If the directory you
specify does not exist, the procedure creates it for
                 you.

If the DES$PREDEFINED directory is not empty, the
installation procedure asks for permission to purge
                 the existing files.

                 * DES$PREDEFINED is non-empty, supersede existing files [YES]?

              12.Template Libraries.

                 * Do you want to install YOURDON [YES]? YES
                 * Do you want to install GANE&SARSON [YES]? YES
                 * Do you want to install MERISE [YES]? YES

The installation procedure now asks to install
template libraries for Yourdon, Gane & Sarson, and
Merise libraries. You must choose at least one of the
                 templates.

If you have the CDD Repository V5.0 or later installed
on your system, the installation procedure displays
an informational message at the end of Step 13
indicating that the template libraries on this kit
are incompatible with CDD. Your CDD Repository V5.0 kit
contains savesets with the correct template libraries
for DECdesign. After the successful installation of
DECdesign, invoke the upgrade. (For more information,
                 see Chapter 3.)

              13.Online Training.

                 * Do you want the training for Yourdon installed [YES]? YES

                 * Do you want the training for Gane & Sarson installed [YES]? YES

The installation procedure now asks you to install
the DECdesign online training package. Each training
package requires an additional 9000 blocks of disk
space on the system disk. The packages include two
Bookreader format files and a series of examples, all
of which will be placed in SYS$EXAMPLES. A description
of how to use the on-line training package is
supplied in Section 3.4. (You must have the DECwindows
Bookreader installed on your system to use the training
                 package.)

              14.Purge files.

                 * Do you want to purge files replaced by this installation [YES]?

You have the option to purge files from previous
versions of DECdesign that are superseded by this
installation. Purging is recommended; however, if you
need to keep files from the previous version, enter NO
                 in response to the question.

                 * Do you want to run the IVP after the installation [YES]?

The installation procedure now asks if you want to
run the IVP (unless you are installing a client-only
version of DECdesign with no local access). The IVP for
DECdesign checks to be sure that the installation is
successful. It is recommended that you run the IVP.

After DECdesign is installed, you can run the IVP
independently to verify that the software is available
on your system. You should always run the IVP after
installing new versions of Rdb/VMS or CDD/Plus. You
might need to run the IVP after a system failure to
make sure that users can access DECdesign. To do this,
follow the instructions in the following informational
                 messages.

              16.Read informational messages.

At this point, the installation procedure displays a
number of informational messages that report on the
progress of the installation. There are no further
questions. If the installation procedure has been
successful up to this point, VMSINSTAL moves the new
or modified files to their target directories, updates
help files, and updates DCL tables, if necessary. If
you chose to have files purged, that work is done now.
                 The following messages are displayed:

%VMSINSTAL-I-MOVEFILES, files will now be moved to their target
                                                    directories...
The DECdesign IVP can be found in the SYS$COMMON:[SYSTEST.DECDESIGN]

VMSINSTAL deletes or changes entries in the process
symbol tables during the installation. Therefore, if
you are going to continue using the system manager's
account and you want to restore these symbols, you
should log out and log in again.

        2.2 Error Recovery

If errors occur during the installation itself or when
the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) is running,
VMSINSTAL displays failure messages. If the installation
fails, you see the following message:

%VMSINSTAL-E-INSFAIL, The installation of DECdesign V1.1 has failed.

If the IVP fails, you see these messages:

The DECdesign V1.1 Installation Verification Procedure failed.

%VMSINSTAL-E-IVPFAIL, The IVP for DECdesign V1.1 has failed.

Errors can occur during the installation if any of the
              following conditions exist:

o The operating system version is incorrect.

o A prerequisite software version is incorrect.

o A new version of Rdb/VMS or CDD/Plus has been installed
and you have not performed a needed conversion. (For
                 more information, see Chapter 3.)

o Quotas necessary for successful installation are
                 insufficient.

o System parameter values for successful installation are
                 insufficient.

o The VMS help library is currently in use.

o The product license has not been registered and loaded.

                                              After Installing DECdesign

After installing DECdesign, you need to perform the
              following tasks:

o Edit the system startup files.

o Complete the server installation (if you installed the
                 server).

o Complete the online training installation (if you
                 installed the training).

              o Set user account quotas.

              o Tune your system.

If you install new versions of CDD/Plus or Rdb/VMS at
any time after installing DECdesign on your system, you
may have to convert your DECdesign libraries to make
them compatible. (The libraries that must be converted
include libraries created by users on your system and the
methodology template libraries stored in DES$PREDEFINED.)
The CDD/Plus and Rdb/VMS installation guides will tell
you if the conversion of databases is required. The DCL
commands for converting a library are:

              $ RMU/CONVERT [dirspec]
              $ DICTIONARY OPERATOR CONVERT/DICTIONARY [dirspec]

If you plan to install CDD Repository V5.0 or higher after
installing DECdesign, the methodology template libraries
provided in the DECdesign V1.1 kit will not work.

                _____________________ Important _____________________

Before you upgrade to a new version of CDD/Plus,
you need to extract user design libraries using

                                          After Installing DECdesign 3-1

        After Installing DECdesign

DECdesign. (See the Guide to DECdesign for more
                information on extracting libraries.)

                _____________________________________________________

After installing CDD Repository V5.0, you must invoke
an upgrade routine that provides methodology template
libraries compatible with CDD Repository V5.0 or higher.
This upgrade, containing only the template libraries, is
included on the media with CDD Repository kits for V5.0
or higher. There are four savesets: DESCDD.A, DESCDD.B,
DESCDD.C, DESCDD.D. Before invoking the upgrade, please
read the release notes included in saveset A.

After completing the upgrade, use DECdesign to load the
extract files for user design libraries.

        3.1 Editing the System Files

You must edit the system startup and shutdown files to
provide for automatic startup and shutdown of DECdesign
              when your system is rebooted.

Add the command line that starts DECdesign to the system
              startup file, SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM. DECdesign
cannot start until after the network has started. You must
position this new command line after the line that invokes
the network startup command procedure. The following
example shows the network startup command line followed by
              the DECdesign startup command line:

              $ @SYS$MANAGER:STARTNET.COM
                   .
                   .
                   .
              $ @SYS$STARTUP:DES$STARTUP.COM

        3.2 Modifying System Parameters

Do not lower the system parameters below the values stated
              in Table 1-2, Section 1.6.2.

3.3 Completing Installation of the Server

If you installed the DECdesign server, there are several
additional steps needed to actually use the server. You
will need to use a privileged account such as SYSTEM.

During installation, DECdesign defines the server as a
network object. Use the following command to display the
              definition of the network object:

$ MCR NCP LIST OBJECT DES$SERVER

Object Permanent Summary as of dd-mmm-yyyy hh:mm:ss

              Object = DES$SERVER

              Number                   = 67
              File id = DES$SERVER.EXE
              User id = DES$SERVER
              Account                  = DES$SERVER
              Password                 = <your-password>

In the preceding example, <your-password> should be the
same as the password you supplied during the installation
              of DECdesign.

Next, use the following command to ensure that the
temporary definition of the network object is consistent
              with the permanent definition.

$ MCR NCP SET OBJECT DES$SERVER ALL

Finally, you need to make a policy decision on the use of
the server. Do you want to use a network proxy account, or
do you want to define an account for the DECdesign server?

With a network proxy account, a proxy needs to be defined
for each client (a NODE::USERNAME) that will use the
DECdesign server on a specific node. With this approach,
the server will run on the local account defined for the
network proxy. If your users will be creating links
between DECdesign and CDD/Plus public dictionaries
that are protected from general access, then the users
will require proxy accounts to access those public

dictionaries. For more information on network proxy
accounts, see the Guide to Setting Up a VMS System.

With a defined account for the DECdesign server, users who
run the server will run it in the context of the server
account (des$server). This approach is easier to set up
and manage, but it is also less secure than using network
proxy accounts because all server users appear to VMS with
              the same username.

One implication of using the server account is that any
server user on any node can access any DECdesign library
that is accessible with the DECdesign server. If this is
undesirable, you have the following alternatives:

o Use the user registry facility inside DECdesign for
each DECdesign library. (The user registry can detect
the original username of the account requesting access
                 through the server account.)

o Use network proxy accounts and not install the server
                 account on your system.

You can use both the server account and network proxy
accounts on the same system; users that have a proxy will
run the server in their proxy account, and users without a
proxy will run the server in the server account.

To set up the server account, run the SYS$MANAGER:DES$CREATE_
              SERVER_ACCOUNT.COM command procedure. The procedure
prompts you for the UIC and password for the server
account. You should specify the same password you
specified during the installation (the password listed
in the preceding NCP LIST OBJECT command).

The procedure also creates or modifies the DES$SERVER
account to have appropriate access and quotas and creates
the SYS$COMMON:[DES$SERVER] directory where network logs
of server activity are placed. For additional network
              security, the procedure specifies SYS$MANAGER:DES$SERVER_
LOGIN.COM as the login.com for the account. For more
information about the server account, see the comments
at the start of the DES$CREATE_SERVER_ACCOUNT.COM file.

                                              After Installing DECdesign
3.3 Completing Installation of the Server

Here are a few typical problems your users may have
              accessing the server:

o Login Information Invalid at Remote Node-Indicates
that the account is not accessible to the user who is
                 attempting access.

o Network Partner Exited-Indicates that the account is
defined correctly, but there is an error during the
                 execution of the image.

o Network Object Unknown at Remote Node-Indicates that
the DECdesign server was not installed on the system or
that it was removed after the installation.

If these errors occur, you can get additional information
in the file NETSERVER.LOG, which is created in the root
directory of the account that the user tried to access.

3.4 Completing Installation of the Online Training

If you installed the online training during the installa-
tion procedure, you need to enter some commands to prepare
the Bookreader environment for your users.

First, determine whether you have an existing DECdesign
              bookshelf on your system.

              $ DIRECTORY SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]DECDESIGN.DECW$BOOKSHELF

If the DECdesign bookshelf does not exist, create it as
              follows:

o Create an empty file with the same location and name
shown in the preceding directory command.

              o Edit your SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF
file and add the following line:

                  SHELF\DECDESIGN\DECdesign Documentation Shelf

The LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF file specifies the books
and bookshelves that are listed when you start the
Bookreader. (You can create this file if it does not
                 already exist.)

        After Installing DECdesign
3.4 Completing Installation of the Online Training

Next, perform the following commands (the append commands
are only necessary the first time you install the online
              training):

$ ! The next commands are for the Yourdon training.
              $  Append -
              _$ DES$Y_EX:DES$Y_OLT_PROFILE.DECW$BOOKSHELF -
              _$ SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]DECDESIGN.DECW$BOOKSHELF
              $  Rename DES$Y_EX:DES$Y_OLT_PROFILE.-
              _$ DECW$BOOK SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]*
              $ !
$ ! The next commands are for the Gane & Sarson training.
              $  Append -
              _$ DES$GS_EX:DES$GS_OLT_PROFILE.DECW$BOOKSHELF -
              _$ SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]DECDESIGN.DECW$BOOKSHELF
              $  Rename DES$GS_EX:DES$GS_OLT_PROFILE.-
              _$ DECW$BOOK SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]*

The final step to complete the installation of the
training applies only if you had previously installed
DECdesign V1.0 training. If this is the case, then remove
references to the V1.0 training file in the following
              file:

                SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF

To remove the references, search the file for the title
(Using DECdesign) of the V1.0 training and delete any line

The training is now fully installed. The training users
will need to perform some tasks individually:

o Before invoking the Bookreader to use the online
training, they must define the following logical name
                 on their system:

                 $ Define DECW$BOOK SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]

o When the users include or load examples during the
online training, they must precede the example
filenames with the appropriate logical name: DES$Y_
EX for Yourdon and DES$GS_EX for Gane & Sarson.

3.4 Completing Installation of the Online Training

o The users will need a small number of DDIF example
files during the online training sessions. They must
copy these files into their SYS$LOGIN directory and
convert them. (The training describes how to convert
the files.) The files are located in the following
                 directories:

                 o DES$Y_EX:*.DDIF !Yourdon files

                 o DES$GS_EX:*.DDIF !Gane & Sarson files

        3.5 VAXcluster Considerations

If you install DECdesign on a machine that is part of a
VAXcluster and want to run the DECdesign image on other
nodes in the cluster, then do the following on each of the
              other nodes:

              1. Load the appropriate DECdesign PAKs (one for the base
tool and one for each methodology you have installed)
as well as the PAKs for any supporting products you
have installed (for example, Rdb/VMS and CDD/Plus).

              2. Run the CDD/Plus startup procedure, SYS$STARTUP:CDDSTRTUP.COM.

              3. Run the DECdesign startup procedure, SYS$STARTUP:DES$STARTUP.COM.

        3.6 User Account Requirements

To work with DECdesign, user accounts on your system must
have certain privileges and quotas. The next two sections
              contain information on these requirements.

        3.6.1 Privileges

To use DECdesign, each account must have at least the
TMPMBX and NETMBX privileges. Use the VMS Authorize
Utility to determine whether users have the privileges
              they require.

        3.6.2 User Account Quotas

You must make sure that the appropriate user accounts have
sufficient quotas to be able to use DECdesign. Table 3-1
summarizes the required user account quotas.

        3.7 Tailoring Your System

This section describes ways to tune your system to improve
DECdesign performance. One of the best is to use VMS
AUTOGEN after DECdesign has been running for several days.
AUTOGEN does an excellent job of selecting the appropriate
values for items that affect DECdesign performance.

The following list describes the major items that affect
              performance:

o The WSMAX SYSGEN parameter-Use AUTOGEN to set the value
for WSMAX. (If you have a WSMAX definition in your
MODPARAMS.DAT file, remove it and run AUTOGEN.) If

                                              After Installing DECdesign
                                              3.7 Tailoring Your System

AUTOGEN decides a WSMAX value is less than 5000 to
6000 pages, you probably do not have enough physical
memory to run DECdesign with good performance. For a 16
megabyte workstation, the WSMAX will typically be in
the 8000 to 10,000 range or higher.

If you thoroughly understand WSMAX and its interactions
with other SYSGEN parameters, you may want to set it
manually by placing a definition in your MODPARAMS.DAT
file. The setting should never be less than the value
                 that AUTOGEN would have supplied.

The best technique for setting WSMAX manually is to
specify MIN_WSMAX. This lets AUTOGEN set a maximum
value for WSMAX while you set a minimum value. (If
you specify a MIN_WSMAX value higher than AUTOGEN
determines is reasonable, you get a warning from
                 AUTOGEN.)

o The WSEXTENT process quota-Set this value as high
as possible. Generally, it is not useful to set the
WSEXTENT value higher than WSMAX. However, it may
be useful in a clustered environment where different
nodes of the cluster have different WSMAX values. In
this case, make WSEXTENT equal to or greater than the
largest value of WSMAX on the nodes where DECdesign
                 will be run.

o The WSDEF process quota-This value is typically set
in the 1000-2000 range. (It cannot be set to a higher
                 value than WSQUOTA.)

o The WSQUOTA process quota-Set this value to the 4000-
6000 range. This quota indicates the number of pages
available even when system-wide memory requirements
are high. The difference between WSQUOTA and WSEXTENT
(WSEXTENT being larger) is the additional memory you
may be allocated when there is available memory.

o The PGFLQUO process quota-Set this value to 60 or 70
thousand blocks. If VMS broadcasts a message that it is
approaching its page file limit, you should increase
the size of the page file immediately. For information
on changing the size of the page file, see the Guide to
                 Setting Up a VMS System.

        After Installing DECdesign
        3.7 Tailoring Your System

o The Virtual Page Count-Set this value to a minimum of
                 75,000 pages.

              o The View_cache_max variable in DES$DW_DEFAULTS.DAT-This
value can be set by individual DECdesign users in their
own environments. (The file is created in DECW$USER_
DEFAULTS; the default value is 50.) A higher value
speeds performance but requires more memory. A lower
value slows performance, but avoids memory overflow
                 problems.

For example, possible values for a 16 megabyte VS3100 are
              as follows:

              o WSMAX = 10000-12000

              o WSDEF = 1000-2000

              o WSQUOTA = 3000-6000

              o WSEXTENT = 10000-12000

If there is no extra memory available to allow usage to
exceed WSQUOTA, then performance is likely to be poor. In
actual use, DECdesign needs a minimum of 7000 to 8000
pages to run effectively. The primary goal of making
WSQUOTA relatively low is to allow VMS to better make
tradeoff decisions about the use of memory, especially if
WSEXTENT is considerably higher than WSQUOTA.

        3.8 Determining and Reporting Problems

If you encounter a problem while using DECdesign, report
it to Digital. Depending on the nature of the problem
and the type of support you have, you can take one of the
              following actions:

o Call Digital if your software contract or warranty
agreement entitles you to telephone support.

o Submit a Software Performance Report (SPR).

o Fill out and submit a Reader's Comments form if the
problem has to do with the DECdesign documentation.
There are Reader's Comments forms at the back of each
manual. Use the form from the manual in which you found
the error. Include the section and page number.

                                                    Sample Installation

This appendix contains a sample installation of DECdesign.
This sample was run on a system that had no previous
              version of DECdesign installed.

The sample installation assumes that DECnet has been shut
down, that no users are logged on to your system, and that
OPTIONS N is specified to print the release notes. The
Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) runs at the end
              of the installation.

               IMPORTANT:

This installation requires that you extract your designs and convert
the extract files before loading them into V1.1 libraries.
Please reference the Release Notes for further details.
If you have not extracted your existing libraries please exit and
use the V1.0 image to do so; failure to extract your existing designs
               will leave them unaccessible.

A Server-Only installation of DECdesign does not require a DECdesign
license to be registered and loaded.

        Sample Installation

                      Product: DECDESIGN
                      Producer: DEC
                      Version: 1.1
                      Release Date: 11-JUN-1991
              * Does this product have an authorization key registered and loaded? y

IMPORTANT: DECdesign may be OPTIONALLY installed as a CLIENT-ONLY image.
A CLIENT-ONLY image is for a workstation environment where you wish to
run DECdesign ONLY on remote libraries and you will NOT have a local
copy of CDD/Plus installed and there will be NO locally accessible
DECdesign libraries. This installation option requires the least amount
of resources, but is the most restrictive in that it ALWAYS requires
that some other node or cluster has a DECdesign server installed that
                  you will have access to.

              * Do you wish a CLIENT-ONLY, NO LOCAL ACCESS installation [NO]?

The DECdesign server allows access to libraries on this node or cluster
using the DECdesign remote access protocol. The server is not necessary
unless there are users on remote nodes accessing libraries on this node or
                  cluster.

              * Do you want the DECdesign Server installed [NO]? y

The DES$PREDEFINED directory is where support files and template
libraries are kept. This directory and its contents may be placed
in SYS$LIBRARY or may be placed in a disk and directory of your
                  choice.

In all cases, the directory should be on a disk that is always mounted
and accessible to all users of DECdesign. You MUST also pick a directory
that can be used by DECdesign exclusively; the directory may be empty,
or not yet exist. If the directory is not empty due to a previous
DECdesign installation, you may choose to supersede duplicate files.
If you not wish to supersede existing files you MUST specify an
                  alternate DES$PREDEFINED directory.

The DES$PREDEFINED directory location is currently defined as:
                  SYS$COMMON:[SYSLIB.DESLIB].

              * Is this where you'd like it to be placed [YES]?

DES$PREDEFINED disk is mounted and available

The proposed DES$PREDEFINED directory is not empty.
This update requires that files of previous versions be purged
                  or that DES$PREDEFINED be empty.

                  Object Number: 67
                  Object Name: DES$SERVER

The above is currently defined with a USER ID different
than the default User ID for this product.

                      Current User ID: OLT
                      Default User ID: DES$SERVER

The installation will proceed using the User ID currently
defined. If you wish to use the default User ID, just
                  follow these steps:

                      a) Logging into this node, and
                      b) Invoke SYS$MANAGER:DES$NETOBJ_INSERT.COM.

Do this AFTER the installation is complete.

                  *************************************************************

DES$SERVER has been placed in the DECnet object database as number 67.

                  SYSTEM MANAGER:

If your DECnet object database is not configured to be in
the cluster common directory, then you will need to perform
                  the following:

In order to have remote access on another node which shares
this cluster common root directory, you must insert
DES$SERVER.EXE into that node's DECnet object database by:

                      a) Logging into that node, and
                      b) Invoke SYS$MANAGER:DES$NETOBJ_INSERT.COM.

Files and Logical Names Installed on Your System

The DECdesign installation procedure installs a number
of files on your system and defines some logical names.
Section B.1 lists the files installed. Section B.2 lists
the logical names that are added to the system logical
              name table.

        B.1 File Names

Table B-1 contains the names of all files created on your
              system when DECdesign is installed.
