                                                          About This Guide

DECwrite is a document processing application that lets
you create and format documents that contain both text and
graphics. In addition, you can include data from supported
cooperating applications into your DECwrite documents.

          Purpose of This Guide

This guide describes how to install DECwrite on the VMS
operating system. You should review the entire guide before
             you start the installation.

          Who Should Use This Guide

This guide is for VMS system managers or others responsible
for installing system software. To install DECwrite software,
you must have access to a privileged account such as the
SYSTEM account, and you must be familiar with the VMS
             installation procedure (VMSINSTAL).

                                                                         v

          Structure of This Guide

This guide has four chapters and two appendixes. Chapter 1
is a general introduction. Chapter 2 describes installation
prerequisites and suggestions. Chapter 3 is the installation
procedure. Chapter 4 describes post-installation procedures
and general usage information. Appendix A shows a sample
installation procedure for reference purposes. Appendix B
lists the files that DECwrite installs or modifies on your
             system.

          Conventions

The following conventions are used in this guide:

mouse The term mouse is used to refer to any
pointing device, such as a mouse, a puck,
                                or a stylus.

          MB1, MB2, MB3 MB1 indicates the left mouse button, MB2
indicates the middle mouse button, and
MB3 indicates the right mouse button. (The
buttons can be redefined by the user.)

<Ctrl/x> A sequence such as <Ctrl/x> indicates that
you must hold down the key labeled Ctrl
while you press another key or a pointing
                                device button.

          <PF1> < x > A sequence such as <PF1> < x > indicates
that you must first press and release the
key labeled PF1, then press and release
another key or a pointing device button.

                                                                       vii

cates one of the following possibilities:

_ Additional optional arguments in a

                                   statement have been omitted.

_ The preceding item or items can be

                                   repeated one or more times.

. format; the items are omitted because
. they are not important to the topic being
                                discussed.

          () In format descriptions, parentheses
indicate that, if you choose more than
one option, you must enclose the choices
                                in parentheses.

[] In format descriptions, brackets indicate
                                that whatever is enclosed is optional;
you can select none, one, or all of the
                                choices.

{} In format descriptions, braces surround
a required choice of options; you must
choose one of the options listed.

                                                  Introduction to VMS DECwrite

DECwrite is a compound document processing application that
allows VMS users to create and format documents that contain
text, graphics, images, and application data. DECwrite is
compliant with the CDA[TM] (Compound Document Architecture).

Included with DECwrite is DECchart, a data-driven charting
application, and the DECwrite Equation Editor.

               1.1 Online Help

DECwrite features help on all menu items, and context-
sensitive help on many functions. The help provides detailed
information about how to use DECwrite features and allows
users to become proficient in creating DECwrite documents.

               1.2 The DECwrite Editor

DECwrite includes a full word processing editor with
functions such as select, cut, copy, paste, undo, redo,
and navigation. DECwrite features sophisticated search
and replace capabililites, including the ability to search
for returns, special characters, and arbitrary white space.
Advanced editing features such as redlining and change bars
make DECwrite an appropriate application for documentation
                  and publication groups.

                  editors, as well as EMACS.

DECwrite includes Houghton Mifflin's high-quality hyphenation
routines and an American English spell check lexicon based
on the American Heritage Dictionary (U.S. version only).
DECwrite allows the user to create exception dictionaries
for words that would not commonly appear in a standard
dictionary. Exception dictionaries can be shared within
a DECwrite workgroup. Hyphenation can also be controlled
locally with discretionary hyphens. Additional lexicons
are also available. Refer to the DECwrite Software Product
Description for a list of the optional lexicons available.

Preparing for DECwrite Installation on a VMS System

This chapter describes tasks that you must perform when
installing DECwrite, and suggests the best methods for
                  preparing for installation.

Installing DECwrite is similar to installing other VMS
                  layered products. You should:

1 Take an inventory of the software distribution kit.

2 Make sure that your system has the prerequisite software
                     and hardware.

3 Register your DECwrite license according to the VMS
License Registration section in this chapter.

4 Register your lexicon license according to the VMS License
                     Registration section in this chapter.

5 Prepare your system and its users for installation.

6 Print and read the Release Notes.

7 Perform the installation procedure and any necessary post-
                     installation procedures.

8 Resume normal operations after you complete the installa-
                     tion.

You should allow approximately 45 minutes for the installa-
tion and 8 minutes to run the IVP.

               2.1 DECwrite Distribution Kit

                  Each DECwrite distribution kit contains:

_ A bill of materials (BOM) and indented bills report (BIL)

_ The distribution medium for the DECwrite software

_ Documentation for the product (Media Only kits include the

                     installation guide only.)

_ The DECWRITE-USER Product Authorization Key (PAK)

                   _ The INTL-LEXICON-AMERICAN PAK

To ensure that you have a complete kit, check the kit
contents against the bill of materials and the indented bills
                  report.

Check also that you received the correct distribution medium,
                  labeled as DECwrite V1.0.

If your kit is damaged or if you find that parts of it are
                  missing, contact your Digital representative.

               2.2 Prerequisite Software

To install DECwrite you must have:

_ A valid VMS operating system configuration running VMS

Version 5.1 or higher, having the VMS Required saveset.

_ DECwindows installed. To execute the IVP during the

installation, DECwindows should also be running.

Since DECwrite is a DECwindows application, it can run in
                  either of the following ways:

_ Standalone execution - running the DECwindows X11 display

server and the client application on the same machine.

_ Remote execution - running the DECwindows X11 display

server and the client application on different machines.
This requires that DECnet also be installed.

For standalone execution, the following DECwindows components
must be installed on the machine:

_ VMS DECwindows Compute Server (Base kit; includes runtime

                     support)

                   _ VMS DECwindows Device Support

For remote execution, the following DECwindows components
                  must be installed:

                     On the workstation:

_ VMS DECwindows Compute Server (Base kit; includes

                        runtime support)

                      _ VMS DECwindows Device Support

                     On the remote machine:

_ VMS DECwindows Compute Server (Base kit; includes

                        runtime support)

_ VMS DECwindows Device Support (optional)

Refer to the VMS Version 5.1 Installation Guide for
                        details.

               2.3 Prerequisite Hardware

DECwrite supports all hardware configurations supported
by a VMS Version 5.1 system running DECwindows, with a
minimum of 8 MB of memory. Please see the DECwrite Software
Product Description (SPD) for details on supported hardware
                  configurations.

               2.4 Privileged Account

To install DECwrite, you must be logged into the system
manager's account (SYSTEM), an account that has SETPRV, or an
account with at least the following privileges:

                   _ CMKRNL

                   _ WORLD

                   _ SYSPRV

Note that the VMSINSTAL procedure turns off BYPASS privilege
at the start of the installation.

               2.5 License Registration

The DECwrite PAK and the International Lexicon/American
English for VMS PAK should be registered and loaded before
installing or using DECwrite. The information you need is in
the Product Authorization Key (PAK) shipped with DECwrite.
The PAK is a paper certificate that contains data about your
license. The following PAKs are part of your DECwrite kit:

                   _ DECWRITE-USER

Preparing for DECwrite Installation on a VMS System 2-3

                   _ INTL-LEXICON-AMERICAN

If you do not register and load the licenses before
installing DECwrite, the installation will complete but
the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) will not be
run. You can execute the IVP manually after the installation,
following the instructions in Chapter 3.

To register the license, first log in to a privileged account
such as the system manager's account, SYSTEM. Then choose one
of the following procedures to perform the registration. The
second method is faster for experienced users:

_ Invoke the SYS$UPDATE:VMSLICENSE.COM procedure. When

prompted for information, respond with data from your
                     Product Authorization Key (PAK).

                     OR

_ Issue the DCL commands LICENSE REGISTER and LICENSE

LOAD with the appropriate qualifiers that correspond to
                     information on the PAKs.

For additional information, see the License Management
Facility section in your VMS Version 5.1 documentation set.

               2.6 International Lexicons

If you have previously installed any of the International
Lexicon kits or are reinstalling DECwrite, make sure you have
                  executed the SYS$STARTUP:LCI$STARTUP.COM procedure before
starting the installation. This startup procedure defines the
logical LCI$LEXICONS that the installation procedure checks
to place lexicon files in their proper directories.

               2.7 VAXcluster Considerations

You can install DECwrite on a VAXcluster.

In a VAXcluster with a common system disk, you can execute
the installation procedure on a single member of the cluster.
After the installation is completed, each VAX processor can
                  share the same DECwrite software.

You must check the number of global sections and global pages
on each node in the VAXcluster where you plan to install
DECwrite. Instructions are in the next section.

See Chapter 4 for details about VAXcluster post-installation
                  instructions.

               2.8 System Quotas

You use the VMSINSTAL command procedure to install DECwrite.
For VMSINSTAL to run properly, there must be sufficient
disk storage space and proper system parameter settings to
accommodate the installation. This section describes the
recommended disk space and system parameters.

                  2.8.1 Disk Space Requirements

Installing DECwrite requires a certain amount of disk storage
space. Once the installation is complete, less storage space
is required. Table 2-1 summarizes the storage requirements.

Table 2-1 Free Disk Blocks Required to Install DECwrite

                  _____________________________________________________________
                                        Free Blocks
                                        Required During Free Blocks Required
                  Kit___________________Installation_____After_Installation____

                  DECwrite V1.0 23,500[1] 23,400[1]
                  _____________________________________________________________
[1]These values are approximate, but are the maximum that
the installation will require. The installation procedure
reports the actual number of blocks required, which will
be slightly less than these values, and may differ from the
                  sample installation in Chapter 3.
                  _____________________________________________________________

Use the DCL command SHOW DEVICE to determine the number of
free blocks that are presently available on the system disk:

                    $ SHOW DEVICE SYS$SYSDEVICE

If the disk does not have enough free blocks, delete
                  unnecessary files to provide space.

Digital recommends that the system parameter WSMAX be set to
at least 4100. On a single-user workstation, it can be set
even higher, depending on the amount of workstation memory.

The DECwrite executable images and the shared libraries can
be installed using the INSTALL utility. Table 2-2 lists the
                  minimum required system parameter values.

Table 2-2 Minimum Required Global Pages and Sections

                  _____________________________________________________________

                  GBLSECTIONS_________8________________________________________

If GBLPAGES or GBLSECTIONS are below the recommended values,
VMSINSTAL will display a message. Since installing the
DECwrite images and shared libraries is optional, you can
safely continue the installation. Make sure to adjust these
system parameters before modifying WRITE$STARTUP.COM. See
                  Chapter 4 for details.

2.8.1.1 Checking Parameter Values To check the value of
one or more parameters, enter the following command at the
                  DCL prompt:

                    $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSGEN
                    SYSGEN>

At the SYSGEN> prompt, use the SHOW command to display the
                  value of each system parameter.

After you finish checking parameter values, use the EXIT
command to return to DCL level.

2.8.1.2 Calculating GBLPAGES and GBLSECTIONS Parameter
Values The values for GBLPAGES and GBLSECTIONS in Table 2-2
indicate that you must have at least 2200 unused global pages
and 8 unused global sections available for the installation.

To calculate the number of unused global pages and global
sections in your system, perform these steps:

1 Use the DCL F$GETSYI lexical function to determine the
number of free global pages and global sections:

                       $ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT F$GETSYI("FREE_GBLPAGES")
                       $ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT F$GETSYI("FREE_GBLSECTS")

2 If the number of unused global pages is less than the
number specified in Table 2-2, you must increase the value
using the AUTOGEN command procedure (instructions follow).

The next section describes the procedures for changing
these values. For more information, refer to the VMS system
                  management documentation.

2-6 Preparing for DECwrite Installation on a VMS System

2.8.1.3 Changing Parameter Values with AUTOGEN You use
the AUTOGEN command procedure to change system parameters.
AUTOGEN automatically adjusts values for parameters that need
                  to be changed.

1 To change system parameters with AUTOGEN, first edit the
                     following file:

                       SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT

For example, to increase the setting for the GBLPAGES
system parameter by 2000, add this line to the file:

                       ADD_GBLPAGES = 2000

2 Next, run the AUTOGEN procedure to recalculate your system
parameters. Enter the following command at the DCL prompt:

                       $ @SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN GETDATA REBOOT

AUTOGEN performs an automatic system shutdown and reboots
when it has finished. Rebooting your system makes the new
                     parameter values active.

For more information about using AUTOGEN, see the
instructions on modifying system parameters in the VMS system
                  management documentation.

               2.9 System Disk Backup

Make a backup copy of your system disk before you install
                  DECwrite.

For more information on backing up your system disk, refer to
                  the VMS system management documentation.

                                                           Installing DECwrite

This chapter describes how to run the DECwrite installation
procedure. You should allow approximately 53 minutes to
complete the installation. Before you start installing
DECwrite, make sure that your system meets the requirements
                  outlined in Chapter 2.

Appendix A contains a printout of a typical installation
procedure for your reference. Appendix B contains a list of
all the files a DECwrite installation installs or modifies.

You receive information about the number of blocks required
to install the entire kit or only the video font files.

You can install the entire DECwrite kit or just the video
fonts required for the DECwrite Equation Editor. If you
are installing DECwrite in a VAXcluster that includes
workstations, you should install the entire kit. Standalone
workstations that always run DECwrite from a remote system
require only that the video fonts be installed locally. This
allows the workstaton to run the DECwrite Equation Editor
                  from the remote system.

Similarly, if a standalone workstation user not running
DECwrite wants to use either DECwindows Mail or the DDIF

DECwrite Equation Editor fonts need to be installed on that
                  workstation.

               3.1 VMSINSTAL Requirements

When you invoke the DCL command VMSINSTAL, it checks:

_ Whether you are logged in to a privileged account

_ Whether you have adequate quotas for installation

_ Whether DECnet is up and running

_ Whether any users are logged in to the system

If VMSINSTAL detects a problem during the installation
procedure, it notifies you and asks if you want to continue.
To stop the installation and correct the problem, enter NO or
press the Return key. After you have made the correction, you
                  can restart the installation.

To abort the installation procedure at any time, press
Ctrl/Y. The installation procedure deletes all files it has
created up to that point and exits. You can then restart the
                  installation.

Digital recommends that you refer to the section on the
VMSINSTAL command procedure in your VMS documentation set. In
the VMS base documentation set, see the VMS System Manager's
Manual. In the VMS full documentation set, see the Guide to
                  Setting Up a VMS System.

               3.2 VMSINSTAL Procedure

You must use the VMSINSTAL command procedure to install
DECwrite. Follow these steps to begin the installation:

1 Log in to a privileged account such as the VMS system
                     manager's account, SYSTEM.

2 Send a message requesting that all users log out.

3 Make sure DECwindows is running. If you have not
                     previously executed the @SYS$STARTUP:DECW$STARTUP.COM
command procedure, do so at this time.

4 Enter the following command line to run VMSINSTAL:

               $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL DECWRITE device-name OPTIONS N

where device-name is the device specification for the
                     distribution medium, for example, MUA0:.

Specifying OPTIONS N indicates that you want to be
prompted to display or print the Release Notes. VMSINSTAL
has several other options, described in the VMS software
                     installation documentation.

5 A message similar to the following appears on your screen:

VAX/VMS Software Product Installation Procedure V5.1

               It is 6-JUN-1989 at 14:46.
Enter a question mark (?) at any time for help.

Your DECnet network is up and running.
The following processes are still active:
                L
                M
                N
                O
                P
               * Do you want to continue anyway [NO]?

DECwindows requires that DECnet be up and running. Enter
                     YES to continue the installation.

6 You are asked whether you need to back up your system
                     disk:

               * Are you satisfied with the backup of your system disk [YES]?

Generally, you should back up your system disk before
any major software installation, as you were instructed
in Chapter 2. YES is the default answer. If you backed
up your system disk recently, press the Return key to
                     continue.

7 Next, you receive instructions to mount the distribution
medium you specified when you invoked VMSINSTAL (in this
                     example, MUA0):

Please mount the first volume of the set on MUA0:.
               * Are you ready?

Mount the medium, then enter YES to indicate that you are
                     ready to continue.

The following messages appear on your screen:

The following products will be processed:

               %VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product saveset A ...

8 If you selected OPTIONS N when you first invoked the
VMSINSTAL procedure, a menu asks you how you want to
                     handle the Release Notes.

               Release Notes Options:

                       1. Display release notes
                       2. Print release notes
                       3. Both 1 and 2
                       4. Copy release notes to SYS$HELP
                       5. Do not display, print or copy release notes

               * Select option [2]:

You should review the Release Notes in case they contain
any information about changes in the installation
procedures. Selecting option 3 displays the Release Notes
and prints a copy of them.

9 If you do select an option that prints the Release Notes,
you are prompted for a print queue:

               * Queue name [SYS$PRINT]:

Press the Return key to print the Release Notes on
SYS$PRINT, or type a different queue name and press
Return. You receive a message similar to the following:

               Job 810 (queue SYS$PRINT, entry 1295) started on SYS$PRINT

10You are asked whether you want to continue with the
                     installation:

               * Do you want to continue the installation?

               3-4 Installing DECwrite

Enter YES to continue, otherwise press the Return key. In
either case, the Release Notes are copied to a file in the
SYS$HELP directory and you receive a message similar to
                     the following:

%VMSINSTAL-I-RELMOVED, The product's release notes have been
               successfully moved to SYS$HELP.

The Release Notes are contained in
                     SYS$HELP:DECWRITE010.RELEASE_NOTES.

Note that the name of the Release Notes file includes the
                     product name and version number.

The screen displays the following messages:

                               DECwrite V1.0 Installation Procedure

                                           NOTE:
This installation updates certain base system components. If
you reinstall or upgrade VMS 5.1 or 5.2, you must reinstall this
                   kit.

You can install the entire DECwrite kit or just the
video fonts required for the DECwrite Equation Editor.
If you are installing DECwrite in a VAXcluster that
includes workstations, you should install the entire
kit. Standalone workstations that always run DECwrite
from a remote system require only that the video fonts be
installed locally. This allows the workstaton to run the
DECwrite Equation Editor from the remote system.

You receive information about the number of blocks
required to install the entire kit or only the video
font files. You are then asked if you want to install
                     the entire kit.

You can install the DECwrite kit completely or just the video
fonts required to use the DECwrite Equation Editor.

If you are installing this kit for use on a workstation, or on a
VAXcluster that includes workstations, then you should install
the entire kit. This requires 22962 blocks.

If you are installing this kit on a workstation that will only run
DECwrite from a remote system, then only the video font files are
                    needed. This requires 108 blocks.

               * Do you want to install the entire kit [YES]?

Enter YES or press the Return key to install the entire
kit. Enter NO to install only the DECwrite Equation Editor
fonts. See Appendix A for a printout of an installation
                     that installs only fonts.

A message similar to the following displays:

                   Installing entire DECwrite kit....

11The American English spell check lexicon is installed as
part of the DECwrite installation. If you have previously
installed an International Lexicon kit, then DECwrite will
install the lexicon in the directory [LCI.LEXICONS] on
the device defined in the LCI$LEXICONS logical name. The
                     following message is displayed:

%VMSINSTAL-I-DIREXISTS, The spell check lexicon directory already exists:
               -VMSINSTAL-I-DIREXISTS, device_name:[LCI.LEXICONS]
-VMSINSTAL-I-DIREXISTS, The American-English lexicon will be installed there.

               3-6 Installing DECwrite

If no LCI$LEXICONS logical name is defined, the lexicon
will be installed in SYS$SYSDEVICE:[LCI.LEXICONS] by
default, or on a specified device. This message displays:

The DECwrite spell check lexicons will be installed in the directory
SYS$SYSDEVICE:[LCI.LEXICONS] by default. You may optionally install the
files on a device other than the system disk.

               * Specify a device on which to install the spell check lexicons
               [SYS$SYSDEVICE:]:

Note If no LCI$LEXICONS logical is defined, the installation
checks for the existence of an International Lexicon
                     startup file, SYS$STARTUP:LCI$STARTUP.COM. If this
file is found, the installation terminates to avoid
the possibility of accidentally creating LCI$LEXICONS
directories on two separate devices. In this case, execute
SYS$STARTUP:LCI$STARTUP.COM and then perform the DECwrite
                     installation.

Specify a device or press the Return key to install the
                     lexicons in [SYS$SYSDEVICE:].

12You are asked if you registered and loaded the DECwrite
                     PAK. The following information displays:

                        Producer: DEC

If your authorization key is registered and loaded, enter
                     YES.

If you answer NO to either of these questions, then one or
both of the following messages is displayed:

%VMSINSTAL-W-NOIVP, The IVP will not be run since the DECwrite license
               -VMSINSTAL-W-NOIVP, is not installed.

You must register and load the license in order to use DECwrite.
It is recommended that the IVP be executed after the DECwrite
                    license has been installed.

The IVP consists of several separate command procedures.
                    Execute them as follows:

                         @sys$test:write$ivp           ! DECwrite
                         @sys$test:chart$ivp           ! DECchart

-VMSINSTAL-W-NOLEX, This license must be installed before DECwrite can perform
-VMSINSTAL-W-NOLEX, any spell checking functions. Installation continuing...

14You are asked if you want to run the IVP.

               * Do you want to run the IVP after the installation [YES]?

When invoked during the DECwrite installation procedure,
the IVP runs DECwrite. To do this, it requires that
DECwindows be running and that a workstation display
device be defined. If one is not defined, you are prompted
for the name of a workstation on which to display the IVP:

               %VMSINSTAL-W-NODISPLAY, Workstation display not defined

Enter the node name of the workstation on which to display the IVP
or press the Return key to continue and not run the IVP

               * Node name:

This name is used to issue a SET DISPLAY command to the
appropriate workstation. Note that this requires the
Session Manager's security database be set up properly and
that nodes are defined properly in the network databases.
For example, if you are installing DECwrite on your own
workstation and you have SET HOST 0 from your own account

               3-8 Installing DECwrite

to use the SYSTEM account, then you must add 0::SYSTEM to
the security database. See the DECwindows User's Guide for
details on the Session Manager's security database.

If you are NOT installing DECwrite from a workstation,
then do not run the IVP. Instead, use a workstation to run
the IVP after the installation is completed.

If you are installing DECwrite from a workstation, but one
that is NOT running DECnet, then do not run the IVP during
the installation. Instead, execute the IVP from DCL after
the installation is completed, making sure that a display
device is defined using the local transport (see the SET
                     DISPLAY DCL command).

Press the Return key to run the IVP automatically after
the installation or enter NO if you want to run the IVP
from DCL, as explained in Chapter 4.

15You are asked whether you want to purge (delete) old
versions of files replaced by this installation:

               * Do you want to purge files replaced by this installation [YES]?

Purging is recommended. Press the Return key to purge old
versions of the files. To save old files, or if you are
installing DECwrite for the first time, enter NO.

                   16The following messages display:

To complete the installation on a standalone VAX 11/780
                   will take approximately:

                       45 minutes to install
8 minutes to run the IVP

All required questions have been asked.
You can terminate the installation procedure at this time.

               * Do you want to continue the installation [YES]?

17Press the Return key to continue the installation.

                     The following messages display:

                    The DECwrite startup command procedures:

                         sys$startup:write$startup.com
                         sys$startup:lci$startup.com (American-English lexicon)

have been added to your system startup phase LPMAIN (via SYSMAN).

If you are installing this kit on a workstation, you should
restart DECwindows after the installation has completed:

                         @sys$startup:decw$startup restart

%VMSINSTAL-I-MOVEFILES, Files will now be moved to their target directories...

Note that the DECwrite installation procedure checks the
system for previously installed products. It does this to
avoid reinstalling earlier versions of products such as
DECchart, which are bundled with DECwrite. For example,
if the installation procedure determines that the version
of DECchart currently installed on the system is a newer
version than the one in the DECwrite kit, then DECchart

will not be installed. The savesets for DECchart need
not be restored; therefore, the "%VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE,
Restoring product saveset X " messages and the amount
of disk space required will vary depending on previously
                     installed layered products.

The installation then executes the IVPs if you answered
                     yes.

The IVP edits a sample document. If the document looks the same as
the illustration in the installation guide, then the installation
has been successful. After the document window appears, click the
mouse in the window to assign input focus, and enter Alt-Q (hold
down the Compose Character or "Alt" key and press Q) to quit
DECwrite and the DECwrite portion of the IVP.

                                            Following the DECwrite Installation

This chapter describes tasks that you must do after DECwrite
                  is installed.

               4.1 System Startup Files

                  During the installation, WRITE$STARTUP.COM and
LCI$STARTUP.COM are placed in SYS$STARTUP: and automatically
added to your system startup file to the LPMAIN phase. Use
the SYSMAN Utility's STARTUP command to modify the phase or
mode of execution for these startup files.

Note If an international lexicon has previously been installed,
The DECwrite installation will NOT add LCI$STARTUP.COM to
the system startup procedure. This file is presumed to be
in SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM from a previous lexicon
                  installation.

By default, all the INSTALL commands in WRITE$STARTUP.COM are
commented out. Remove the comments for the images and shared
libraries you would like to install. This editing is usually
only necessary on server systems where multiple users are
running DECwrite concurrently. Make sure you have completed
the steps in the System Quotas section of this installation
guide before executing WRITE$STARTUP.COM on a standalone
system or on other nodes in a VAXcluster.

                                       Following the DECwrite Installation 4-1

4.2 Installing DECwrite on a Standalone System

When installing DECwrite on a standalone system:

                   1 Optionally execute @SYS$STARTUP:WRITE$STARTUP.COM.

2 At the DCL prompt, execute
                     INSTALL REPLACE SYS$LIBRARY:DCLTABLES.EXE.

3 If you have installed DECwrite on a workstation, you must
restart the DECwindows server so that it can use the new
fonts required by the DECwrite Equation Editor. Use the
following DCL command to restart the server:

                       $ @SYS$STARTUP:DECW$STARTUP RESTART

Note that this will freeze the workstation display.

4.3 Installing DECwrite on a VAXcluster

To install DECwrite on a cluster with a common system disk,
make sure you load the DECwrite license and the American
English lexicon license on each node in the cluster. To load
the licenses, enter the following commands:

                    $ mc sysman
                    SYSMAN> set environment/cluster/user=system
Remote Password: <system password for the cluster nodes>
                    SYSMAN> do license load DECWRITE-USER
                    SYSMAN> do install replace sys$library:dcltables.exe
                    SYSMAN> do install replace sys$library:cda$access
                    SYSMAN> do license load intl-lexicon-american
                    SYSMAN> do @sys$startup:lci$startup
                    SYSMAN> do @sys$startup:write$startup
SYSMAN> do @sys$startup:decw$startup restart ! If there are
no active users. Only required for workstations
                    SYSMAN> exit

               4.4 Rebooting the System

You can reboot your system after you have installed
DECwrite and reset the system parameters (if necessary).
A system reboot verifies that DECwrite is ready for use and
establishes any new parameter settings. Note, however, that
                  rebooting is optional.

               4.5 User Account Requirements

To use DECwrite, user accounts on your system must have
certain privileges and quotas. The next two sections contain
information about these requirements. The third section
discusses how to set up user accounts.

                  4.5.1 Privileges

To use DECwrite, each account must have at least the TMPMBX
and NETMBX privileges. Use the VMS Authorize Utility to
determine whether users have the privileges they require.

                  4.5.2 User Account Quotas

You must make sure that the appropriate user accounts have
sufficient quotas to be able to use DECwrite. Table 4-1
                  summarizes minimum recommended process quotas.

                  Table 4-1 User Account Quotas

                  _____________________________________________________________
[1]On a single-user workstation, the value of WSEXT can be
set equal to the value of WSMAX for better performance.

User account quotas are stored in the file SYSUAF.DAT. Use
the Authorize Utility to verify and change user account

quotas. First set your directory to SYS$SYSTEM and then run
                  AUTHORIZE:

                    $ SET DEFAULT SYS$SYSTEM
                    $ RUN AUTHORIZE
                    UAF>

At the AUTHORIZE prompt (UAF>), use the SHOW command with an
account name to check a particular account. For example:

                    UAF> SHOW SMITH

To change a quota, use the MODIFY command at the UAF> prompt.
                  MODIFY has the following format:

                     MODIFY account-name /quota-name=nnnn

This example changes the FILLM quota for the SMITH account
and then exits from the utility:

                    UAF> MODIFY SMITH /FILLM=40
                    UAF> EXIT

After you exit from the utility, the VMS system displays
messages indicating whether or not changes were made. Once
you have finished making the changes, the users must log out
and log in again for the new quotas to take effect.

For more information on modifying account quotas, see the
description of the Authorize Utility in the VMS system
                  management and operations documentation.

               4.6 Tuning Your System

After you install DECwrite, you might want to adjust your
system to enhance performance or lower the use of some system
resources. Information about tuning your system is included
in the VMS System Management, Volume 4, Performance manual.

               4.7 Installation Verification Procedures

The DECwrite Installation Verification Procedures are run
automatically at the end of the DECwrite installation
procedure if you enter YES to that option during the
installation. If you did not enter YES, you may want to run
the IVPs later. If run later, the IVPs need three separate
                  command procedures:

               4-4 Following the DECwrite Installation

                    $ @SYS$TEST:WRITE$IVP.COM         ! DECwrite
                    $ @SYS$TEST:CHART$IVP.COM         ! DECchart
                    $ @SYS$TEST:CDACVTCHILD$IVP.COM   ! CDA Converter Library subset
                    $ @SYS$TEST:LAE$IVP.COM           ! American-English lexicon

You receive a message indicating whether the IVP succeeded or
                  failed.

               4.8 Running DECwrite From FileView

As part of the installation, DECwrite is added to the
FileView Applications menu. You should inform all users after
the installation that DECwrite is now available as an option
on their FileView Applications menu. For more information on
FileView, refer to the DECwindows User's Guide.

               4.9 Running DECwrite From DCL

You can also run DECwrite from DCL:

                     $ run sys$system:decwrite

               4.10 DECwrite Sample Document

During installation, DECwrite places sample files for each of
its components in the following directories:

                   _ SYS$COMMON:[SYSHLP.EXAMPLES.DECWRITE]

                   _ SYS$COMMON:[SYSHLP.EXAMPLES.DECCHART]

                  The DECWRITE directory contains:

_ The documents used for the Getting Started exercises

                   _ Several demonstration documents

_ A sample equation for use with the DECwrite Equation

                     Editor

_ Several sample Encapsulated PostScript files for use with

                     DECwrite's Link to Picture option.

For instructions on using the DECwrite Getting Started
exercises and the demonstration document, refer to the
DECwrite Getting Started book and the DECwrite User's Guide.

The DECCHART directory contains a sample chart file used in
the DECchart Getting Started exercises. For instructions on

               4.11 Base System Update/Upgrading VMS

DECwrite Version 1.0 updates certain base system components.
If you reinstall or upgrade VMS, you must reinstall
DECwrite to keep these base system components updated. This
reinstallation is necessary only on VMS Version 5.1 and VMS
                  Version 5.2 systems.

For a description of the base system changes, refer to
                  SYS$HELP:DECWRITE010.RELEASE_NOTES.

               4.12 Determining and Reporting Problems

If you encounter a problem while using DECwrite, report it
to Digital. Depending on the nature of the problem and the
type of support you have, you can take one of the following
                  actions:

_ Call Digital if your software contract or warranty

agreement entitles you to telephone support.

_ Submit a Software Performance Report (SPR).

_ Fill out and submit a Reader's Comments form if the

problem has to do with the DECwrite documentation. There
are Reader's Comments forms at the back of each manual.
Use the form from the manual in which you found the error.
Include the section and page number.

Review the Software Product Description (SPD) and Warranty
Addendum for warranty information. If you encounter a problem
during the warranty period, report the problem as indicated
above or follow alternate instructions provided by Digital
                  for reporting SPD nonconformance problems.

                                                       Sample DECwrite Printout

This appendix contains printouts of typical DECwrite
                  installation procedures. These procedures show

_ A full DECwrite installation with all licenses installed

_ An installation with only the font license installed

_ An installation with no licenses installed

To perform a successful installation, you must:

1 Prepare your system by completing the procedure in
                     Chapter 2.

2 Install DECwrite by completing the installation procedure
                     described in Chapter 3.

3 Perform any needed post-installation procedures described
                     in Chapter 4.

               A.1 Full DECwrite Installation

This sample installation printout shows the user responses
and system messages when all the appropriate licenses have
                  been installed.
