Before You Install VAX DBMS Version 4.2

This package contains the VAX DBMS software and installation
          instructions.

Before you install VAX DBMS on your VMS operating system, do the
          following:

o Read the Bill of Materials. Check to see that all items
listed there are in your kit. If any items are missing,
             contact your Digital representative.

o Make sure VMS Version 5.3 or higher is installed on your
system. However, you must have VMS Version 5.4 or higher in-
stalled on your system to use the two-phase commit protocol.

o Make sure VAX CDD/Plus Version 4.1 or higher is installed on
             your system.

o Make sure you have converted to VAX CDD/Plus before you in-
stall VAX DBMS Version 4.2. Digital recommends that you ex-
tract all schemas, subschemas, storage schemas, and security
schemas to a DDL source file by using DBO/EXTRACT/OLD_CDD as
described in the VAX DBMS Release Notes.

o Make a backup of all your databases before installing VAX
DBMS Version 4.2 and before converting these databases. Once
you convert databases to Version 4.2 format, you can never
access those databases with a lower version of VAX DBMS. Keep
the backup files available until you are sure the conversions
to the new format are successful.

o Read the VMS VAXcluster Manual if you are installing VAX
DBMS in a VAXcluster environment. VAX DBMS in a VAXcluster
             environment allows concurrent, multiple-processor access.

o Read the VAX DBMS Release Notes.

o Read the VAX DBMS Installation Guide carefully for important
information about the installation kit and prerequisites,
the installation procedure, related VMS system parameters and
disk space requirements, and VAXcluster considerations.
