This in-Cterface allows users to interact with OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS AlphaCusing a point-and-click technique. DECwindows includes a set of in-Ftegrated desktop applications that demonstrate the ease of use of thisDuser interface and provides OpenVMS users with a base set of desktoptools.EDECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS VAX pro-Gvides some new features, including Year 2000 enhancements and the abil-Dity to coexist in the same environment with Extended File Specifica-tions (EFS).DIn addition, DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 for OpenVMS Alpha deliv-Cers the New Desktop environment for OpenVMS Alpha systems, which isFderived from the CDE (Common Desktop Environment) technology. CDE pro-Fvides and defines a consistent user interface for end users and a con-Fsistent development environment for application developers across mul-tiple platforms.C December 1998 CThe graphical user interface that was provided in previous versionsHof DECwindows Motif is still available and is referred to as the DECwin-Edows desktop. The DECwindows desktop is the only desktop provided forEOpenVMS VAX. On OpenVMS Alpha, the installation procedure gives usersDthe choice of installing one or both desktops and asks which desktopFshould be started by default. If both desktops are installed, the user-can switch desktops by restarting DECwindows.FBoth the New Desktop and the DECwindows desktop are based on Motif[R].FMotif is a graphical user interface that is widely acknowledged as theindustry standard.CThe DECwindows desktop provides two window managers: the Motif Win-Cdow Manager and the XUI Window Manager. Users can switch easily be-Ftween the two window managers. The DECwindows desktop productivity ap-Fplications use the Motif toolkit, but they also work with the XUI Win-dow Manager.EThe DECwindows Motif Version 1.2-5 layered product provides both run-Etime and programming support for the CDE Motif 1.0 toolkit (Motif Re-Glease 1.2.5) and the X Consortium's specification for the X Window Sys-Ctem[TM], Version 11, Release 5 (X11 R5), and provides run-time sup-=port for the Motif Release 1.1.3 and XUI toolkits and X11 R4.FPrograms developed for the Motif Release 1.2.2 and 1.2.3 toolkits thatEwere provided in previous versions of DECwindows Motif can be run un-Dder the CDE Motif 1.0 toolkit. This means that users can run XUI andEMotif applications, including native applications and, on OpenVMS Al-Cpha systems, translated applications. (See the Translated Image En-Gvironment section of this SPD for more information about running trans-lated applications.)CX Window System standards supported as part of DECwindows Motif in-Dclude the X11 network protocol, a base set of workstation fonts, theCC language binding for the Xlib programming library, and the C lan-(guage binding for the X Toolkit library." 2 ESupport of the X11 network protocol in the client library and displayDserver components provides the OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS Alpha operat-Eing systems with the ability to interoperate with other X11-compliant!systems in a distributed fashion.DDECwindows supports the client/server distribution inherent in the XFWindow System. This client/server model allows X Window System clientsEto run on one node and display output to another node, using a trans-Cport to communicate between the nodes. The DECwindows Motif VersionC1.2-5 for OpenVMS product provides four transport interfaces: localFshared memory, DECnet, TCP/IP (using DIGITAL TCP/IP Services for Open-CVMS product or third-party products such as MultiNet[R] and Wollon-Egong), and LAT. Users can also provide their own transport subsystemsand transport interfaces.GTo determine whether a separately orderable DECwindows Motif based lay-Eered product or X application runs on or can communicate with DECwin-Ddows Motif for OpenVMS VAX or OpenVMS Alpha systems, consult the ap-)plication's Software Product Description.Basic ComponentsFThe DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS user environment consists of four ba-sic components:Session ManagerESession Manager provides the top-level user interface to a DECwindowsEworkstation. From Session Manager, users can start applications, cus-Ctomize their session, and perform security management. Session Man-Cager also lets users specify the language of the user interface forFsupported DECwindows applications if they have ordered, installed, andEare licensed to use the appropriate DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS lan-guage variant kits.FFor more information about which DECwindows Motif desktop applicationsChave translated user interfaces, refer to the SPD for that languageDvariant. The DECwindows Motif language variant SPDs also contain in-Eformation on specific local hardware and software support provided inthe language variant kits." 3 Window ManagerDThe Window Manager lets users control the size and placement of win-Edows. The Motif Window Manager is provided as the default window man-Cager; users can choose instead to work with the DECwindows XUI Win-Cdow Manager. The window manager can be chosen by an individual user,or by a system manager for an entire system.FileViewHFileView, a graphical interface to the OpenVMS file system, allows users?to navigate the file system and to perform operations on files.DECterm[TM]DThe DECterm terminal emulator provides workstation users with a tra-Cditional character-cell interface for existing OpenVMS features andDapplications. It is a VT320 terminal emulator. It supports ReGIS[TM]Hand sixel but is not fully VT340 compatible. Programs written for VT52-,CVT100-, VT220-, or VT320-class terminals and using OpenVMS terminalEdriver features operate without modification in this workstation win-Hdow. DECterm also provides workstation-oriented features, such as mouse-Fbased cursor positioning, variable screen sizes, and cutting and past-Cing of text between DECterm and other DECwindows applications. Many:programs can also use these features without modification.Year 2000 EnhancementsEDECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Alpha and VAX Version 1.2-5 contains theEYear 2000 enhancements that originally shipped in ALPMOTF03_U4012 andCVAXMOTF02_U4012 kits. These enhancements are the result of a rigor-Dous and comprehensive analysis and testing of the entire OpenVMS op-erating system.DFor a full description of Year 2000 enhancements, see the DECwindowsCMotif for OpenVMS Alpha and VAX Version 1.2-5 Release Notes, avail-+able in online format on the product media." 4 DFor more information about the OpenVMS Year 2000 Initiative, includ-Ding how you can test your environment and applications for Year 2000:readiness, please visit the OpenVMS Year 2000 web page at:2 http://www.openvms.digital.com/openvms/products
/year-2000Extended File SpecificationsHExtended File Specifications (EFS) optionally extends OpenVMS file namesEand attributes to match those of Windows 95[R] and Windows[R] NT[TM].FWhen coupled with DIGITAL[TM] Advanced Server, EFS allows OpenVMS sys-Ctems to act as fully functional file servers to Windows 95 and Win-Cdows NT clients. In addition, EFS allows OpenVMS system managers toEperform OpenVMS system management functions on Windows NT and WindowsD95 files from an OpenVMS account. This functionality is intended forFuse primarily with DIGITAL Advanced Server, but it is possible to cre-Eate and manipulate EFS extended file names using a subset of DCL com-Dmands.
