1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
This technical specification describes the requirements for Signalling System No. 7 for the Nordic Mobile Telephone system NMT-450/ 900 as defined in NMT Doc. 450/900-2. The specification is split in three parts:
I Mobile User Part (MUP)
II Handover User Part (HUP)
III SCCP specification for Mobile User Part
The purpose of this specification is to define a MUP-specification for the NMT system to correspond to the signalling procedures defined in NMT Doc. 450/900-2.
The signalling system described in this document refers only to end- to-end signalling between NMT nodes(MTX’s, HLR’s and AR). The signalling between MTX’s and HLR’s is conveyed via national and international signalling networks while the signalling between MTX’s and AR is conveyed only via national signalling networks. The signalling between MTX’s and the fixed telephone network is specified in the national TUP or ISUP specifications.
The following cases for NMT node end-to-end signalling are specified in MUP:
- MTXV updates information about roaming subscribers in HLR/MTXH,
- HLR/MTXH cancels roaming information in an earlier MTXV,
- HLR/MTXH updates MS-category information which is stored in MTXV,
- MTXV updates service information in HLR/MTXH,
- Security Data transfer,
- Roaming Signalling
For end-to-end signalling between MTX’s, HLR’s and AR only Security Data Transfer is specified.
The MUP specification includes restart procedures to recover from the error situations, where an MTX or HLR has been restarted and the location register contents have been lost. The procedures for handling of abnormal cases are described.

1.3 Compatibility
All new revisions of the MUP-specification shall be compatible with older revisions. NMT-nodes with different implementations of MUP and service level shall be able to co-operate.
Co-operating data shall content information about the MUP revision of the co-operating exchange. The indicator is implementation dependent.
Originating node is filling in «Optional Information Field Indicators» and «Optional Information Fields» with regards to the MUP edition of the implementation in the terminating node.
The co-operating «service-level» is limited by the node with the reduced functionality.
«Optional Information Field Indicators» must only be added in «Spare» fields or in the end of the message. Spare bits are coded «0».
The terminating node is discarding messages with unreasonable information
Within one MUP edition, the terminating node is throwing away the information in optional fields without any functional support.
