These variables include product identifiers, hardware devices, directory locations, file names, and ___________________________mount_points.___________________ viii 1 _________________________________________________________________ Overview of the CD-ROM User's Guide The following information about Digital's Software Product Library CD-ROMs applies to all platforms. 1.1 About These CD-ROMs Digital's Software Product Library CD-ROMs compose a software delivery vehicle that allows you to receive an update of consolidated software products on a regular basis. This method of distribution does not change the content of any individual product. There is no impact on product compatibility; individual products are neither more nor less compatible with each other as a result of consolidated distribution. 1.1.1 Before Using the CD-ROMs Make sure you are familiar with the system hardware, including your CD-ROM drive. Refer to the Optical Disc Drive Owner's Manual for your CD-ROM reader for instructions on using the CD-ROM drive. 1.1.2 Handling the CD-ROMs The CD-ROMs accompanying this booklet are enclosed in an antistatic envelope. To be mounted on your system, a CD-ROM must be removed from this envelope and loaded into a caddy. In handling the CD-ROM, always grasp it by its edges only. For information about inserting the CD-ROM in the disc drive, refer to the Optical Disc Drive Owner's Manual. Overview of the CD-ROM User's Guide 1-1 Overview of the CD-ROM User's Guide 1.2 Product Licensing Agreements 1.2 Product Licensing Agreements The media and the software programs contained on these CD-ROMs belong to Digital. Use of the software products is authorized only if you have a valid software license from Digital. Therefore, you must purchase the appropriate software license for each product you want to use from this consolidated distribution. A License Management Facility (LMF) Product Authorization Key (PAK) allows you to access a software product. A PAK must be registered and loaded before you can install the associated product from the Software Product Library CD-ROM. Each product has a unique LMF PAK name. Refer to your license agreements for license terms and conditions. See your operating system documentation for information on using the License Management Facility. 1-2 Overview of the CD-ROM User's Guide 2 _________________________________________________________________ OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library This chapter describes how to use the OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library CD-ROMs. 2.1 Mounting and Controlling Access to a CD-ROM To access the files on an OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library CD-ROM, mount the CD-ROM using the following procedure: 1. Find the appropriate volume label on the face of the CD-ROM. 2. Load the CD-ROM into a protective caddy. 3. Insert the caddy into the drive. 4. Log in to the system manager's account (SYSTEM). 5. Mount the CD-ROM by entering the MOUNT command in the following format: MOUNT device-name: volume-label For example: $ MOUNT DKA400: VAXBINJAN941 2.2 Using the CDMENU Utility The CDMENU utility provides a menu interface that helps you perform the following tasks easily: o Display a master index of all products o Display new and updated products o Fetch or copy release notes o Display and print installation guides and other documentation OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library 2-1 OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library 2.2 Using the CDMENU Utility o Install products To invoke the CDMENU utility: 1. Mount the CD-ROM as described in Section 2.1. 2. Define the logical name CD_DIRECTORY in your LOGIN.COM file. - To access a single CD-ROM, enter a command in the following format: $ DEFINE CD_DIRECTORY device-name:[CDROM] For example: $ DEFINE CD_DIRECTORY DKA400:[CDROM] - To access multiple CD-ROMs, define CD_DIRECTORY as a search list, entering a command in the following format: $ DEFINE CD_DIRECTORY device1:[CDROM],device2:[CDROM],device3:[CDROM] For example: $ DEFINE CD_DIRECTORY DKA200:[CDROM],DKA300:[CDROM],DKA400:[CDROM] 3. Define the logical name CD_EDIT to indicate the editor to use while displaying documentation on your screen. For example: $ DEFINE CD_EDIT LSE In this example, the Language Sensitive Editor (LSE) is invoked. 4. Enter the following command at the system prompt to invoke the CDMENU utility: $ RUN CD_DIRECTORY:CDMENU The CDMENU main menu is displayed. 5. Follow the directions on the screen to choose the option for the task you want to perform. ________________________ Note ________________________ CDMENU assumes the CD-ROMs identified in the CD_DIRECTORY logical name definition are from the same 2-2 OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library 2.2 Using the CDMENU Utility release because it utilizes the first instance of CD_CONTENTS.DAT located in the [CDROM] directory. ______________________________________________________ 2.3 Accessing a Software CD-ROM OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library CD-ROMs contain directories for each product. These directories contain save sets of the binary images included in the software product, and product installation documentation in PostScript and ASCII text formats. Each product directory begins with a name unique for that product. 2.3.1 OpenVMS VAX CD-ROM Directory Structure Table 2-1 shows the structure of the OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library CD-ROMs. The [README] directory, located on the first CD-ROM, contains the documents you should read first. In most cases, these documents are available in ASCII text and PostScript format. ________________________ Note ________________________ If present, the files SPECIAL_NOTES.TXT and SPECIAL_NOTES.PS in the [README] directory contain important information about specific products in this release. ______________________________________________________ For each product, the name of the root directory usually corresponds to the name of the product save set. The kit save sets are located in the KIT subdirectory. Documentation is located in the DOCUMENTATION subdirectory. You may also use the CDMENU utility to perform this task (see Section 2.2). Other product documentation not listed in Table 2-1 is available in two ways: o On OpenVMS VAX Online Documentation Library CD-ROMs in an electronically viewable format o As individual product documentation sets in hardcopy format Either may be ordered separately by contacting your Digital account representative. 2.3.3 Printing the Documents You can print the documentation for the OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library either by using the CDMENU utility (see Section 2.2) or by entering a DCL command. You do not need a product license to print these documents. See the OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library Master Index for pointers to product directory specifications. To print a document in Table 2-1 for text output, send the file to an ASCII printer by entering a command in one of the following formats: $ PRINT/QUEUE=queue_ANSI device:[README]file-name.TXT $ PRINT/QUEUE=queue_ANSI device:[product.DOCUMENTATION]file-name.TXT To print a document in Table 2-1 for PostScript output, send the file to a PostScript printer by entering a command in one of the following formats: $ PRINT/QUEUE=queue_POST device:[README]file-name.PS $ PRINT/QUEUE=queue_POST device:[PRODUCT.DOCUMENTATION]file-name.PS In the preceeding examples, device represents the name of the drive on which you have placed your OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library CD-ROM. OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library 2-5 OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library 2.4 Installing Layered Products 2.4 Installing Layered Products This section describes how to install layered products on an OpenVMS VAX system. 2.4.1 Location of Product Save Sets and Installation Instructions The OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library Master Index gives the directory locations of the products on the software binaries CD-ROMs. This information is also available in the CDMASTER_INDEX.PS and CDMASTER_INDEX.TXT files in the [README] directory on the first CD-ROM. Installation information for each product, in PostScript and ASCII formats, is located in [product.DOCUMENTATION] directories, where product is the product directory name as given in the OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library Master Index. You do not need a product license to print the information in these directories. Read the Ordering Information section in the product SPD for product ordering information. 2.4.2 Installation Methods Install layered products using one of the following methods: o Using the CDMENU utility (see Section 2.2). o Invoking VMSINSTAL. o Invoking POLYCENTER Software Installation utility. 2.4.2.1 Using VMSINSTAL Individual layered product kits are located in their own directory hierarchies. For this reason, when you install a layered product, you must use a VMSINSTAL command line that is slightly different from the one given in the product's installation guide. When you enter the VMSINSTAL command line, specify the disc drive and the directory by entering a command in the following format: @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL product drive:[directory.KIT] 2-6 OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library 2.4 Installing Layered Products For example: $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL FORT061 DKA400:[FORT061.KIT] Additionally, certain system privileges must be enabled before you run VMSINSTAL. You must be logged in to a privileged account (such as the system manager's account, SYSTEM) that has the SETPRV privilege or at least the following privileges enabled: o CMKRNL o SYSPRV o WORLD To check whether your process has SETPRV or other privileges enabled, enter the following command: $ SHOW PROCESS/PRIVILEGES 2.4.2.2 Using the POLYCENTER Software Installation Utility Beginning with OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1, some products can be installed using the POLYCENTER Software Installation utility. Not all products are available with this installation technology. Use a command in the following format to install one or more software products that support installations by means of POLYCENTER Software Installation utility: PRODUCT INSTALL product/VERSION=number /SOURCE=drive:[directory.KIT] For example: $ PRODUCT INSTALL DQS/VERSION=1.3 /SOURCE=DKA400:[DQS013.KIT] Additionally, certain system privileges must be enabled before you install products. You must be logged in to a privileged account (such as the system manager's account, SYSTEM) that has at least the following privileges enabled: o CMKRNL o SYSPRV To check whether your process has these privileges enabled, enter the following command: $ SHOW PROCESS/PRIVILEGES OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library 2-7 OpenVMS VAX Software Product Library 2.4 Installing Layered Products To see whether a previous version of a product is installed, use the PRODUCT SHOW PRODUCT command. For example: $ PRODUCT SHOW PRODUCT FORTRAN Refer to the product's installation guide for more information on installing products using the POLYCENTER Software Installation utility. To use other features of the POLYCENTER Software Intallation utility, see the POLYCENTER Software Installation Utility User's Guide. 2.5 ECOs and MUPs This section describes the Consolidated Software Engineering Change Order distribution for OpenVMS VAX. This distribution provides ECOs and MUPs. ECOMASTER_INDEX.PS OpenVMS VAX Consolidated (.TXT) Software Engineering Change ___________________________Order_Master_Index._____________ To access an ECO or MUP, do the following: 1. Mount the first CD-ROM as described in Section 2.1. 2. Print the file ECOMASTER_INDEX.PS or ECOMASTER_INDEX.TXT and use it to determine which CD-ROM contains the ECO or MUP you are interested in. These files are located in the [README] directory on the first ECO/MUP CD-ROM and provide a listing of products with ECOs and MUPs, a pointer to the CD-ROM on which each resides, and their directory names. 3. Invoke the ECO/MUP CDMENU utility as described in Section 2.2. This version of the CDMENU utility, located in the [CDROM] directory on the ECO/MUP CD-ROMs, is provided to assist in using the ECO/MUP CD-ROMS. An advantage of using the ECO/MUP version of CDMENU to install an ECO or MUP is that a product history is created, which you can reference at a future date. Use CDMENU to print or view the product's ECO/MUP cover letter. To determine the applicability of an ECO or MUP, read the information in the cover letter which discusses the problems addressed in the kit. 5. For this reason, when you install a layered product, you must use a VMSINSTAL command line that is slightly different from the one given in the product's installation guide. To ensure that a CD-ROM is remounted in the event that your system crashes or is rebooted, follow these steps: a. For example: # setenv CD_DIRECTORY /mnt:/mnt/cdrom o For multiple CD-ROMs: setenv CD_DIRECTORY /mount-point1:/mount-point2:/mount-point1/cdrom For example: # setenv CD_DIRECTORY /mnt1:/mnt2:/mnt1/cdrom 4. Set the environment variable CD_EDIT to indicate the editor to use while displaying documentation on your screen. Enter one of the following commands at the system prompt to invoke the cdmenu utility. Follow the directions on the screen to choose the option for the task you want to perform. ________________________ Note ________________________ The cdmenu utility assumes the CD-ROMs identified in the CD_DIRECTORY environment variable are from the same release because it utilizes the first instance of cd_contents.dat located in the /cdrom directory. ______________________________________________________ 5.3 Accessing a Software CD-ROM ULTRIX Software Product Library CD-ROMs contain directories for each product. These directories contain subsets of the binary images included in the software product, and product installation documentation in PostScript and ASCII text formats. Each product directory begins with a name unique for that product. 5.3.1 ULTRIX CD-ROM Directory Structure Table 5-1 shows the structure of the ULTRIX Software Product Library CD-ROMs. The /readme directory, located on the first CD-ROM, contains the documents you should read first. Installation information for each product, in PostScript and ASCII text formats, is located in product/documentation directories, where product is the product directory name as given in the ULTRIX Software Product Library Master Index. You do not need a product license to print the information in these directories. Read the Ordering Information section in the product SPD for product ordering information. 5.4.2 Installation Methods Install layered products using one of the following methods: o Using the cdmenu utility (see Section 5.2). o Using the setld(8) command. ULTRIX Software Product Library 5-7 ULTRIX Software Product Library 5.4 Installing Layered Products 5.4.2.1 Using setld(8) Individual layered product kits are located in their own directory hierarchies. When you install a layered product, you must use the complete path name on the setld(8) command line. To install products from the ULTRIX Software Product Library: 1. Log in as superuser. 2. Enter a setld command that specifies the load function -l (ell). Use the following format: # setld -l /mount-point/product/kit For example: # setld -l /mnt/pas120/kit This command installs subsets requested from the /pas120/kit subdirectory on the device mounted to the /mnt directory. 5.5 ECOs and MUPs This section describes the Consolidated Software Engineering Change Order distribution for ULTRIX. This distribution provides ECOs and MUPs. Mount the first CD-ROM as described in Section 5.1. 2. Print the file ecomaster_index.ps or ecomaster_index.txt and use it to determine which CD-ROM contains the ECO or MUP you are interested in. These files are located in the /readme directory on the first ECO/MUP CD-ROM and provide a listing of products with ECOs and MUPs, a pointer to the CD-ROM on which each resides, and their directory names. 3. Invoke the ECO/MUP cdmenu utility as described in Section 5.2, with the following modifications: o When you define the environment variable CD_DIRECTORY, append the appropriate ECO/MUP cdmenu saveset name to the command: cdmenu_vax or cdmenu_risc ULTRIX Software Product Library 5-9 ULTRIX Software Product Library 5.5 ECOs and MUPs For example: # setenv CD_DIRECTORY /mnt:/mnt/cdrom/cdmenu_vax o When you invoke the cdmenu utility, substitute the appropriate ECO/MUP cdmenu subset name for cdmenu. For example: % /mnt/cdrom/cdmenu_vax These versions of the cdmenu utility, located in the /cdrom directory on the ECO/MUP CD-ROMs, are provided to assist in using the ECO/MUP CD-ROMS. When you use the ECO/MUP version of cdmenu to install an ECO or MUP, a product history is created, which you can reference at a future date. ________________________ Note ________________________ Do not use the ECO/MUP versions of cdmenu with the Software Products Library CD-ROMs. ______________________________________________________ 4. Use cdmenu to print or view the product's ECO/MUP cover letter.
