DDXF uses one of the following transport products to access the IBM office-system network: VMS/SNA, DECnet/SNA Gateway V1.5, DECnet/SNA Gateway-CT or DECnet/SNA Gateway-ST. Keep this document with your distribution kit. You might need to refer to it again if you receive any maintenance updates or need to reinstall the DDXF software for any reason. Installing the interface on the VMS system involves running the VMSINSTAL procedure with the DDXF distri- bution kit. The installation procedure is described step by step in this chapter. The dialogue is self- explanatory. 1.1 Preparing to Install the DDXF Software Before you start an installation that involves writing to your system disk, Digital Equipment Corporation recommends that you make a backup copy of your system disk. Installing the DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Software 1-1 Your bill of materials (BOM) specifies the number and contents of your media. Check the contents of your kit against the list in the BOM. If your kit is damaged or parts are missing, call your Digital representative. For more information on mounting the distribution me- dia, see the VMS Install Utility Manual. That book also details several options to the installation pro- cedure; be sure to read it. 1.1.1 Prerequisite Software V1.4 of DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF requires VMS V4.6 or later and either DECnet/SNA Gateway V1.5, DECnet/SNA Gateway-ST V1.0, DECnet/SNA Gateway-CT V1.0, or VMS/SNA V1.3. DDXF also requires Gateway Management installed on the VMS load host. The individual transport products re- quire the following versions of the Gateway Management product: _ DECnet/SNA Gateway (DECSA) requires Gateway Management for DECSA V1.5 _ DECnet/SNA Gateway-ST requires Gateway Management V2.0 _ DECnet/SNA Gateway-CT requires Gateway Management V2.0 1.1.2 On-Line Release Notes The DDXF installation kit provides on-line release notes. A prompt to display or print the release notes appears during the installation procedure if you in- voke VMSINSTAL with the OPTIONS N parameter. Later, you can read the release notes by typing or printing the file SYS$HELP:SNADDXFnnn.RELEASE_NOTES (for exam- ple, SYS$HELP:SNADDXF014.RELEASE_NOTES). 1-2 DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Installation and Problem Determination Guide nnn represents the major version number and all main- tenance updates in that version. The first and sec- ond digits represent the major version number, and the third digit represents the maintenance update version number. 1.1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements Before you install the DDXF software, verify that the following installation requirements have been met: Table 1-1: Installation Requirements for the DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF ____________________________________________________ Requirements Specifications ____________________________________________________ Software VAX/VMS V4.6 or later DECnet/SNA Gateway V1.5 DECnet/SNA Gateway-CT V1.0 DECnet/SNA Gateway-ST V1.0 VMS/SNA software V1.3 Gateway Management for DECSA V1.5 or Gateway Management V2.0 Privileges System manager level Disk space 3696 blocks minimum during installation 1306 blocks minimum after installation Global sections 12 Global pages 806 Approximate instal- 6 to 30 minutes, depending on lation time the type of medium used Installing the DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Software 1-3 Table 1-1 (Cont.): Installation Requirements for the DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF ___________________________________________________ Requirements Specifications ___________________________________________________ Associated document VMS software installation guide for your processor ___________________________________________________ For general background information on installing op- tional products on a VMS system, refer to the Guide to VMS Software Installation. If you are using VMS V5.0 on your system, make sure that you have registered and loaded the Product Authorization Key (PAK) before you begin the installation. Refer to the VMS License Management Utility Reference Manual for this information. The following sections show you how to check system parameter values, calculate values for the GBLPAGES and GBLSECTIONS system parameters, and change parame- ter values with the VMS AUTOGEN command procedure. 1.1.4 Checking System Parameter Values To check the values of your system parameters, enter the following command at the DCL prompt to invoke the SYSGEN utility: $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSGEN SYSGEN> At the SYSGEN> prompt, enter the SHOW command to dis- play the value of each system parameter. The values displayed should equal or exceed the the value of each parameter listed in Table 1-1. The following command displays the value for the GLBSECTIONS system parame- ter: SYSGEN> SHOW GLBSECTIONS 1-4 DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Installation and Problem Determination Guide After you finish checking the parameters with the SHOW command, you can enter the EXIT command at the SYSGEN> prompt to return to DCL level. 1.1.5 Calculating the Values for GBLPAGES and GBLSECTIONS To install and run DDXF, you must set the correct val- ues for the GBLPAGES and GBLSECTIONS system parame- ters. The values for GBLPAGES and GBLSECTIONS in Table 1-1 indicate that you must have at least 806 unused pages or 12 unused sections available on your system for the installation to process successfully. To calculate how many unused global pages and global sections your system has, perform the following steps: 1. Run the VMS Install Utility (INSTALL) using the following DCL commands: $ INSTALL == "$SYS$SYSTEM:INSTALL /COMMAND_MODE" $ INSTALL LIST /GLOBAL /SUMMARY NOTE For products installed using only VMS V5.0 or later, do not include the first line in the above example. As of VMS V5.0, INSTALL is an official DCL command. Users no longer need to define a logical for INSTALL. The INSTALL utility displays a summary of global pages and global sections used by your system, as well as the current number of unused global pages. For example: Summary of Local Memory Global Sections 258 Global Sections Used, 22580/3420 Global Pages Used/Unused Installing the DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Software 1-5 2. Determine whether the number of unused pages (3420 in the example) is equal to or greater than the number specified in Table 1-1. If the number of unused pages is less than the number listed in the table increase the value for GBLPAGES. 3. Note the amount shown for "Global Sections Used" (258 in the example). 4. Run the SYSGEN utility. Use the SHOW command to de- termine the number of global sections allocated: $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSGEN SYSGEN> SHOW GBLSECTIONS Parameter Name Current Default Minimum Maximum Unit Dynamic -------------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ---- ------- GBLSECTIONS 512 250 20 4095 Sections 5. Subtract the amount shown in the summary (258 in the example) from the amount allocated. If the dif- ference is less than the number required in Table 1-1, increase the value of the GBLSECTIONS parame- ter. Section 1.1.6 describes the procedures for increas- ing these values as well as those of other system pa- rameters. Refer to the VMS documentation on system management and operations for more information. 1.1.6 Changing System Parameter Values with AUTOGEN You use the AUTOGEN command procedure to change system parameters. AUTOGEN automatically adjusts values for parameters that are associated with the ones you reset manually. To change system parameters with AUTOGEN, you must edit the the following file: SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT 1-6 DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Installation and Problem Determination Guide For example, to change the setting for the GBLSECTIONS system parameter, add this line to the file: GBLSECTIONS = 1024 Or for incremental SYSGEN parameters: ADD_GBLPAGES = 2000 Now, run the AUTOGEN procedure to recalculate your system parameters. Enter the following command at the DCL prompt: $ @SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN GETDATA REBOOT AUTOGEN performs an automatic system shutdown and reboots when it has finished. Rebooting your sys- tem makes the new parameter values active. Also on VMS V5.x systems you can add the [NO]FEEDBACK param- eter to the AUTOGEN command line. For more information about using AUTOGEN, see the instructions on modifying system parameters in the VMS documentation on System Management and Operations. 1.2 Installing Files on a VMS System The procedure for installing files on a VMS system is automated. It requires little involvement beyond answering questions displayed while the procedure (VMSINSTAL) runs. Most questions require a simple yes (Y) or no (N) an- swer. The questions display default answers (where available) in the following way: [YES]: To answer a question with the default YES, press . Installing the DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Software 1-7 To install the distribution kit on your VMS host: _ Log in to the system manager's account. _ Make sure that all users are logged out and all batch jobs are complete. _ Disable logins and DECnet. _ Make sure you have backed up the system disk. _ Check to be sure you have more than 3696 free blocks on the system disk. _ Make sure you have 806 global pages free. (If you do not have enough global pages, the installation will fail immediately.) 1.2.1 Using VMSINSTAL VMSINSTAL is a command procedure that installs VMS layered software products. The VMSINSTAL command line has the following format: $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL SNADDXFnnn ddcu: [OPTIONS N] nnn Represents the major version number and all mainte- nance updates in that version. The first and second digits represent the major version number, and the third digit represents the maintenance update ver- sion number. For the version number of your kit, refer to the label on the distribution kit or the BOM. If you do not supply the product name and ver- sion number, VMSINSTAL prompts you for them. ddcu: Represents a device name for the DDXF installa- tion media, where dd is the device code, c is the controller id, and u is the unit number. It is not necessary to use the console drive. If you do not supply the device name, VMSINSTAL prompts you for 1-8 DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Installation and Problem Determination Guide it. MTA0: is the device name used in examples in this document. OPTIONS N An optional parameter. Provide it if you want to be prompted to display or print the release notes. If you do not include the OPTIONS N parameter, VMSINSTAL does not prompt you to display or print the release notes. When you install a product using VMSINSTAL, you have two installation options. Either you can enter the VMSINSTAL command line specifying the product name, version number, device name, and release notes option, or you can enter the following command: $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL If you enter the preceding command, VMSINSTAL prompts you for the product name, version number, and device name during the installation. If you use this command, you do not have the option of displaying or printing the release notes. 1.3 Installing DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Software This section displays the script you see when you use VMSINSTAL to install DDXF software. In addition, this section contains explanatory text for each prompt. When you run VMSINSTAL, accept the default value by pressing the key. Unless it is otherwise stated, end every command line by pressing . If at any time during the installation, you need to terminate the procedure, press . When you press , the installation procedure deletes all files it has created up to that point and exits. If Installing the DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Software 1-9 you want to restart the installation procedure after pressing , you must begin again from step 2. Enhancements to VMSINSTAL in future releases of the VMS operating system might result in additional prompts appearing during the course of the installation. Although such prompts might not be documented in this installation guide, the installation should proceed normally. Step 1: Log in to the system manager's account. Username: SYSTEM Password: Step 2: Invoke VMSINSTAL. $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL SNADDXFnnn MTA0: OPTIONS N Replace nnn in the product name with the version num- ber of the software, for example, SNADDXF014. DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Installation Verification Procedure. NOTE This procedure only verifies that the DDXF software has been correctly installed on your VAX/VMS system. It does NOT verify that all DECnet/SNA Gateway (or VMS/SNA ), and IBM parameters have been set up correctly. See the DECnet/SNA VMS Gateway Management Guide and the Guide to IBM Parameters for your interconnect product for information on these parameters. Installing the DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Software 1-23 The IVP will now run DDXF and attempt to sign on to DISOSS specifying an invalid Gateway and Access Name. You should now check that the link to DISOSS actually works by performing the following steps. 1. At the DCL prompt, start DDXF by entering the fol- lowing command: $TRANSFER/DDXF The SNADOC prompt appears. SNADOC> 2. Use the SNADOC SEARCH command to create an index of documents in the IBM DISOSS library. Enter the following command to create an index of documents in the IBM DISOSS library. SNADOC>SEARCH/ALL If you get an index of DISOSS documents, the commu- nications link between DDXF and DISOSS is working properly. If you do not get an index of documents, refer to the DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF User's Guide for a list of error messages and the suggested corrective action. Ensuring that DDXF Works Properly 2-1 3 _______________________________________________________ Solving DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Problems This chapter discusses problems you might have using DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF. Subsequent pages contain solu- tions for each problem. Problem Symptom Number 1 You receive an IBM sense code following a general error message from DDXF. 2 You receive an error message indicating that processing of FINAL-FORM text has been aborted. 3 When you FILE or SEND a document, DISOSS accepts the smaller documents but rejects the larger documents. Solving DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Problems 3-1 DDXF Problem 1 You receive an IBM sense code following a general er- ror message from DDXF. For example, you might receive one of the following sense codes: 0801 or 0805. Solution: The secondary DDXF error message indicates a problem in the remote IBM host. The IBM sense code provides details about the problem on the IBM side. Sense code 0801 indicates that a logical unit (LU) is not available and that DISOSS is not running. See your IBM system programmer. Sense code 0805 indicates that all available LUs are in use. Wait until an LU becomes free, or ask your sys- tem programmer to determine whether enough LUs are defined. On occasion, you might receive other IBM sense codes. You can look up their meanings in IBM's Systems Network Architecture Formats, Order No. GA27-3136. 3-2 DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Installation and Problem Determination Guide DDXF Problem 2 You receive the following error message indicating that processing of FINAL-FORM text has been aborted. SNADDXF-E-ABORTED, FINAL-FORM text processing aborted Solution: This message indicates an error in the document you are trying to retrieve. Check that you have specified a FINAL-FORM document. The profile term you specified might indicate a FINAL-FORM document, but you might actually be trying to retrieve an ASCII file. Solving DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Problems 3-3 DDXF Problem 3 When you FILE or SEND documents, DISOSS accepts the smaller documents but rejects the larger ones. You receive the following IBM exception message: -SNADDXF-E-EXCODE, I/O error at DISOSS host Solution: This situation usually means that the DISOSS libraries have become segmented. You do not have enough contigu- ous room for large files. Ask your IBM system program- mer to examine the DISOSS library file system. 3-4 DECnet/SNA VMS DDXF Installation and Problem Determination Guide _______________________________________________________ Index H S Help Software requirements, installation procedure, 1-2 1-10 I Installation Verification Procedure (IVP), run- ning during installa- tion, 1-12 Installing the DDXF software preinstallation tasks, 1-1 R Release notes accessing, 1-2 file specification for, 1-2 Index-1
