__________________________________________________________ DIGITAL DECprint Printing Services for VMS, Patch Kit A for Version 4.0 Cover Letter AV-PJCBA-TK July 1991 __________________________________________________________ Digital provides two software media in this distribution kit: 1. The DEC PrintServer Supporting Host Software for VMS, Version 4.0, or the DEC PrintServer Supporting Host Software for ULTRIX, Version 4.0 2. The DECprint Printing Services for VMS, Patch Kit A for Version 4.0 The second medium contains a software patch for the print symbiont supplied with DECprint Printing Services for VMS, Version 4.0. This letter contains information to help you determine whether you need the software patch and instructions on how to install the patch. Determining if You Need the Patch You do not need to install the DECprint Printing Services for VMS, Patch Kit A for Version 4.0 if your PrintServer printing environment includes the following: o Only ULTRIX and UNIX systems o VMS systems that print jobs to PrintServer printers that use the VAX PrintServer Client Software for VMS (SYS$SYSTEM:LPS$SMB.EXE) Install the DECprint Printing Services for VMS, Patch Kit A for Version 4.0 if your PrintServer printing environment includes the following: o VMS systems that print jobs to PrintServer printers that use the DECprint Printing Services for VMS, Version 4.0 (SYS$SYSTEM:CPS$SMB.EXE) 1 You do not need to read the rest of this letter if you do not need the software patch. Installing the Patch Install the DECprint Printing Services for VMS, Patch Kit A for Version 4.0 on each VMS print client system that uses the DECprint Printing Services, Version 4.0, software to print to the PrintServer printer. To install the patch, perform the following steps: 1. Stop the PrintServer queue. Enter the following command for each PrintServer execution queue. $ STOP/QUEUE/NEXT queue-name 2. If you are installing the patch from CDROM, skip to step 3. If you are installing the patch from a TK50 cartridge or a magnetic tape, mount the medium labeled DECprint Printing Services for VMS, Patch Kit A for Version 4.0. Enter the following command: $ MOUNT/FOREIGN/NOASSIST/NOWRITE device-name The device-name is the name of your drive, for example MUA0:. 3. Extract the command file from the backup save set. $ BACKUP/LOG/SELECT=CPS040_PAT.COM device-name:CPS040_PAT.A/SAVE [] 4. Run the command procedure that installs the patch: $ @CPS040_PAT.COM This command procedure copies the file CPS$SMB.EXE to a file named CPS$SMB_SAVED.EXE for safekeeping and calls the VMS PATCH utility. The VMS PATCH utility displays several informational messages on the screen as it runs. You can ignore these informational messages: %PATCH-I-NOGBL, some or all global symbols not accessible %PATCH-I-NOLCL, image does not contain local symbols 2 When the utility completes, you see the following message: %PATCH-I-WRTFIL, updating image file SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE]CPS$SMB.EXE You can verify the installation of the patch by checking the image file identification field of the new file with the following command: $ ANALYZE/IMAGE/INTERACTIVE SYS$SYSTEM:CPS$SMB.EXE The image file identification of the new symbiont is CPS V4.0-4 (found in the fourth screen of the display). You may delete the saved version of the symbiont or keep it. 5. If you are installing the patch from CDROM, skip to step 6. If you are installing the patch from a TK50 cartridge or a magnetic tape, dismount the medium: $ DISMOUNT device-name 6. Restart the PrintServer queues by executing the printer startup command file: $ @SYS$STARTUP:CPS$STARTUP.COM 3 7. Repeat steps 1-6 on other VMS client systems running the DECprint Printing Services, Version 4.0, software. Alternatively, you can copy the command file from the first system to the next system and follow steps 4-6 on that system. This saves you from loading and unloading the medium on each system if you are installing from a TK50 cartridge or a magnetic tape. Troubleshooting the Patch If the command file does not complete, the VMS PATCH utility displays the following error message: %PATCH-W-DIFVAL, memory contains different value than specified Check the image file identification field as described in step 4: $ ANALYZE/IMAGE/INTERACTIVE SYS$SYSTEM:CPS$SMB.EXE o If the image file identification is CPS V4.0-4, you tried to apply the patch to a file that is already patched. No further action is required. o If you see a different image file identification, call your Digital service representative or the Customer Service Center (1-800-272-2001). __________________________________________________________ The following are trademarks of Digital Equipment Corporation: DECprint, PrintServer, TK, ULTRIX, VMS, and the DIGITAL logo.
