                  Before You Install VAXft System Services Software

          Before you install your VAXft System Services V1.2 software,
          please read the online Release Notes you received with the
          product. If you have not used VAXft System Services software
          before, you also need to assemble this software documentation
          kit. This version of VAXft System Services is compatible with
          VMS V5.4, V5.4-1, and V5.4-2, includes maintenance fixes, and
          supports the DEC WANcontroller 620 for use with VAX WAN Device
          Driver software.

                                        NOTE

             You must install VAXft System Services V1.1 or V1.2 soft-
             ware to use the DEC WANcontroller 620 communications de-
             vice.

          VAXft System Services Release Notes

          Release Notes are available on the software medium as an ASCII
          text file, and can be printed or displayed. To view the file
          FTSS012.Release_Notes, use the OPTIONS N qualifier during your
          installation, as shown in the VAXft System Services Installation
          Guide. During installation, the file is copied to the HELP
          directory on your VAXft system. The software kit also contains
          a copy of this customer letter, and a copy of the installation
          guide.

          VMS Installation

                                        NOTE

             You must install the VMS operating system and VMS Vol-
             ume Shadowing before you install VAXft System Services
             software.

          The VMS Upgrade and Installation Supplement: VAXft 3000 that you
          received with your VAXft system VMS kit will be in the binder
          of the VMS documentation set that contains the VMS V5.4 Release
          Notes. Where a document refers to "VAXft 3000," read "VAXft
          Systems."

          Software Documentation Kit Contents

          This kit contains two binders, a spine insert package, and six
          manuals.

          Software Documentation Kit Assembly

          If you are a new user of the VAXft System, and are assembling
          this kit for the first time:

          1. Place each spine insert in the spine pocket of a binder.

          2. Place this Before You Install letter and the Software Product
             Description in the inside pocket of the System Management
             binder.

          3. Insert on the rings of the System Management binder three
             books in the following order:

             a. Using Factory-Installed Software with VAXft System Ser-
                vices

             b. VAXft System Services Manager's Guide

             c. VAXft System Services Installation Guide

          4. Insert on the rings of the Reference Information binder three
             books in the following order:

             a. VAXft System Services Reference Manual

                Place internal dividers within this book as indicated with
                black-barred locator pages. The internal dividers begin
                the following sections:

                1. VAXft System Services DCL Commands

                2. FTSS$CONTROL

                3. Failover Set Manager

             b. VAXft System Services Error Message Manual

             c. VAXft System Services Master Index

          If you are updating an existing kit:

          1. Replace the old spine insert of the System Management binder
             with the new spine insert.

          2. Place the new customer letter and the new Software Product
             Description in the inside pocket of the System Management
             binder.

          3. Place the Using Factory-Installed Software with VAXft System
             Services manual on the rings of the System Management binder,
             at the front of the binder.
