          EDCS II Version 2.1

          PLEASE READ THIS COVER LETTER
          BEFORE YOU INSTALL YOUR
          EDCS II VERSION 2.1 SOFTWARE KIT

          May 1, 1991

          Dear Customer,

          Congratulations! Your new EDCS II version 2.1 contains
          many new features, including improved stability and
          scalability. This letter contains important information
          that must be read carefully before installing EDCS II.
          Digital wants you to realize the full benefit and best
          performance from all new EDCS II features.

          EDCS II now suports multiple command processors, in-
          creased pool size, and network links. SHOW commands
          process faster. In addition, EDCS II now offers many
          new qualifiers for better performance and increased
          flexibility. Other new features include a recall
          buffer, attributes on generations, and new utilites
          such as batch load, database tuning, and conversion.

                                    NOTE

             VAX EDCS version 1.2 users must upgrade to EDCS
             II version 2.1 before September of 1991.

          VAX EDCS Version 1.2 Users

          If you did not upgrade from version 1.2 to 2.0, and are
          now upgrading from version 1.2 to EDCS II Version 2.1,
          please read Appendix B of the EDCS II Administrator's
          Guide. Features added to version 2.0 include:

          o  Better entity relationship tracking through hier-
             archies that make tracking unlimited in height and
             depth

          o  Greater control of the database through the use of
             lists

          o  Expanded review process

          o  You can create unlimited number of user-defined
             attributes

          o  Improved information retrieval using SHOW commands

          o  Performance improvements

          Before You Install Version 2.1

          Before you install version 2.1, please read the follow-
          ing documents:

          o  EDCS II Installation Guide

          o  EDCS II Release Notes. The Release Notes list all
             the new features, enhancements, and errors. You
             can read the Release Notes during or after the
             installation. To read them after the installation,
             enter the following command at the DCL prompt:

                  $ HELP EDCS RELEASE_NOTES

          o  EDCS II Administrator's Guide, Chapter 7, Recom-
             mendations and Problem Solving. This chapter has
             been greatly revised. It includes recommendations
             based on extensive recent testing that help keep
             your system tuned and running at peak performance.
             Situations to avoid are also noted.

          Contents of Kit

          o  Bill of Materials

             Please read the Bill of Materials enclosed in this
             kit, and check to see that all items listed are
             actually in your kit. If your kit is damaged, or if
             you find that parts of it are missing, please call
             your Digital representative.

          o  Software Product Description

             The Software Product Description provides an overview
             of EDCS II Version 2.1 and its features. The SPD in-
             cludes a Software Support Addendum (SSA), which
             lists supported and nonsupported processors for both
             the client and the server.

          o  Media

             Your kit also contains EDCS II Version 2.1 software
             supplied on the appropriate type of media.

          o  Documentation

             The EDCS II documentation set consists of the fol-
             lowing:

             -  EDCS II Installation Guide

             -  EDCS II User's Guide

             -  EDCS II Pocket Guide

             -  EDCS II Administrator's Guide

             -  EDCS II Programmer's Guide

             -  EDCS II Reference Manual (online only)

             You are receiving two binders in which to place
             your EDCS II documentation set. One of these binders
             is a 2" binder and the other is a 1 1/2" binder.
             Place the EDCS II User's Guide and the EDCS II

             Programmer's Guide together in the larger binder,
             and place the other manuals in the smaller binder.

          o  Software Performance Report

             This form allows you to report any problems you may
             find with EDCS II.

          o  Software Update Survey Card

             After you install EDCS II, please complete this
             card. It gives us valuable feedback on installation
             quality.

          o  PAKs (Product Authorization Keys)

             If you ordered only a client or only a server, your
             kit will contain a single PAK. If you ordered both
             a client and a server, your kit will contain both
             PAKs. The different PAKs are identified as follows:

             Q1        server    QL518
             Q2        client    QL380
