It is intended for system managers. This document applies to VAX Decision Expert Version 1.0 and all maintenance updates in that version. A major version number is represented by the digits to the left of the decimal point, and the maintenance update version number is indicated by the digits to the right of the decimal point. Keep this document with your distribution kit. You will need it to install maintenance updates or to reinstall VAX Decision Expert software for any other reason. For more information about installing Decision Expert soft- ware on VMS systems, refer to the installation/operations guide for your specific processor. This guide describes the installation procedure step-by-step. The system prompts you to answer questions and to change volumes, and it waits for you to tell it to continue. Default values appear in brackets ([]) throughout the in- stallation procedure. Text that you type appears bold for VMS Bookreader online versions. vi Chapter 1 Preparing to Install VAX Decision Expert Software ________________________________________________________________ Your bill of materials (BOM) specifies the number and con- tents of your media. Be sure to check the contents of your kit against this information. If your kit is damaged or if you find that parts of it are missing, call your Digital representative. VAX Decision Expert software runs on VAXstation computers. You can install the software if you are logged on to a ter- minal, but in order to run the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) after installation, you must log on to a VAXstation keyboard without using a network. This guide also gives details on several options to the installation procedure. You must mount distribution media before you install Decision Expert software. The installation procedure prompts you to mount the volumes. For more information on how to mount distribution media, refer to the installation/operations guide for your specific processor. Preparing to Install VAX Decision Expert Software 1-1 ____________________________________________________________ 1.1 Prerequisite Software VAX Decision Expert Version 1.0 requires VMS Version 5.1, including DECwindows. ____________________________________________________________ 1.2 Accessing the Online Release Notes Decision Expert software provides online release notes. The prompt to display or print the release notes before installation appears in step 5 of the installation procedure when you invoke VMSINSTAL with the OPTIONS N parameter. To read the release notes after the installation, display or print the file SYS$HELP:DEEX$010.RELEASE_NOTES. ____________________________________________________________ 1.3 Installation Procedure Requirements The installation takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, de- pending on the type of media and your system configuration. Before installing Decision Expert software, you must have the following privileges and resources: o SETPRV privileges, or CMKRNL, WORLD, and SYSPRV privi- leges. o A minimum of 9000 blocks of free disk space during instal- lation. o Enough physical memory to support a minimum configuration of the VMS V5.1 operating system with the DECwindows V5.1 windowing system. Digital Strongly recommends that you have a minimum of 8 megabytes of physical memory. ____________________________________________________________ 1.4 User Account Quotas and Privileges To use Decision Expert software, each account must have TMPMBX and NETMBX privileges, and the following minimum requirements: o AST limit (ASTLM) 24 (minimum) o Buffered I/O quota (BIOLM) 18 (minimum) o Buffered I/O byte count quota (BYTLM) 8192 (minimum) 1-2 Preparing to Install VAX Decision Expert Software o Direct I/O quota (DIOLM) 18 (minimum) o Enqueue quota (ENQLM) 30 (minimum) o Open file limit (FILLM) 20 (minimum) o Paging file quota (PGFLQUOTA) 10,240 pages (minimum) o Subprocess creation quota (PRCLM) 2 (minimum) o Working set size (WSDEF) 150 pages (minimum) 1024 pages (optimum) Use the VMS Authorize Utility (AUTHORIZE) to compare the current values of these quotas with the requirements for Decision Expert. The following example uses the SYSTEM ac- count: $ SET DEFAULT SYS$SYSTEM $ RUN AUTHORIZE UAF> SHOW SYSTEM To change the values of these quotas, use the VMS Authorize Utility's MODIFY command. For more information, see the VMS Authorize Utility Manual. ____________________________________________________________ 1.5 Special Requirements Decision Expert software requires manual registration with a Product Authorization Key (PAK). Be sure to register Decision Expert software before starting the installation procedure to ensure a successful installation. The VMS License Management Facility is part of Version 5.1 of the VMS operating system. If you are installing VAX Decision Expert software on a VMS Version 5.1 system, you must regis- ter your software license. The license registration information you need is contained in the PAK that is shipped with VAX Decision Expert software. The PAK is a paper certificate that contains information about your license to run a particular piece of software. It is best to register your VAX Decision Expert license before you perform the installation. During the installation, you are asked if you have registered the VAX Decision Expert license and loaded the appropriate authorization key. If you Preparing to Install VAX Decision Expert Software 1-3 have not already done so, you can complete the installation; however, you will not be able to run either the VAX Decision Expert development package or its Installation Verification Procedure (IVP). In addition, you must be logged on to a VAXstation to use the Decision Expert development package and to run the IVP. Once you perform the license registration and have loaded an authorization key, you will be able to run the IVP and use VAX Decision Expert on a VAXstation. Under VMS Version 5.1, some products use the VMS License Management Facility (LMF) to register the product on line automatically. Decision Expert software does not use the License Management Facility to automatically register Decision Expert. Refer to your "License Software Product, Product Authorization Key" form for license registration procedures. That document provides a sample session. ____________________________________________________________ 1.6 Using VMSINSTAL This section reviews how to use the command procedure VMSINSTAL. See Chapter 2 for specific installation proce- dures for Decision Expert software. Appendix A shows a sample installation. After you log in to the SYSTEM account to install the Decision Expert software, set default to SYS$UPDATE and then invoke VMSINSTAL, the command procedure that installs this product. An example of this procedure is shown in steps 1 and 2 of Chapter 2. The command formats are as follows: $ SET DEFAULT SYS$UPDATE $ @VMSINSTAL DEEX010 MUA0: [OPTIONS N] The command parameters are described in the next paragraphs. If you do not supply the first two parameters, VMSINSTAL prompts you for the product and device names. If you want to be prompted for the product and device names and to display or print the release notes, type the following: $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL "" "" OPTIONS N The parameters are defined below. 1-4 Preparing to Install VAX Decision Expert Software DEEX010 Represents the release name of VAX Decision Expert software. Refer to the label on the VAX Decision Expert distribution kit or the VAX Decision Expert BOM for the release version number of your kit. You can also type an asterisk (*) in place of DEEX010. If you are installing from magnetic tape, you can use the asterisk to save installation time; using the asterisk installs the software with a minimum number of tape passes. MUA0: Represents the name of the device on which you plan to mount the media, where MUA is the device code and 0 is the unit number. It is not necessary to use the console drive to install the software. If you use the console drive, you should replace any media you removed from the drive. MUA0: is the device name used in examples in this document. OPTIONS N An optional parameter indicating that you want to be prompted to display or print the release notes. If you do not include the OPTIONS N parameter, VMSINSTAL does not prompt you to display or print the release notes. Digital Strongly recom- mends that you read the release notes before proceeding with this installation. VMSINSTAL has several other options; for information, see the VMS documentation on Software Installation. When you invoke VMSINSTAL, it checks the following: o Whether you have logged in to a privileged account. Digital Recommends that you install software from the system manager's account with your default device and directory set to SYS$UPDATE. o Whether you have adequate quotas for installation. VMSINSTAL checks for the following quota values: _ ASTLM = 24 _ BIOLM = 18 _ BYTLM = 18,000 _ DIOLM = 18 _ ENQLM = 30 Preparing to Install VAX Decision Expert Software 1-5 _ FILLM = 20 Then VMSINSTAL checks the following: o Whether DECnet is up and running o Whether any users are logged in to the system If VMSINSTAL detects that either of these conditions is true, the system asks whether you want to continue the installation. If you want to continue, type YES. If you want to stop the installation, press . 1-6 Preparing to Install VAX Decision Expert Software Chapter 2 Installing VAX Decision Expert ________________________________________________________________ This section explains each step of the installation pro- cedure. Then, follow these steps after installing the software: 1. Run the following commands on each node of the cluster: $ LICENSE LOAD DECISION-EXPERT $ @SYS$STARTUP:DEEX$STARTUP.COM 2-12 Installing VAX Decision Expert 2. To use the product on other nodes in the VAXcluster, you must replace the version of the DCL tables that is installed on the other VAXcluster nodes. To do so, perform the following steps: a. Log on to a node on the cluster. b. Run VMSINSTAL and enter the following command at the INSTALL> prompt: INSTALL> REPLACE SYS$LIBRARY:DCLTABLES.EXE c. Repeat steps a and b for each node on the cluster. Installing VAX Decision Expert 2-13 Chapter 3 After the Installation ________________________________________________________________ After installing the VAX Decision Expert software, you need to perform the following tasks: o Edit the system startup and shutdown files. o Reboot the system. o Set user account quotas. o Modify system parameter settings. o Modify the system startup command file (usually named SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM) to execute the file SYS$STARTUP:DEEX$STARTUP.COM each time the system reboots. This action defines the logical names required for the VAX Decision Expert product. The VAX Decision Expert software is now installed and all users can invoke it with the DECIDE command. You may want to install the shareable images DEEX$DEVELOP_ SHR.EXE and DEEX$DELIVER_SHR.EXE in memory to improve perfor- mance. See the VMS Install Utility Manual. The installation procedure modifies the DCL command table so that the system recognizes and processes the DECIDE command. However, the previous command table is still in effect for those users who are currently logged in. All logged-in users who want to use the DECIDE command must log out and log in again. After the Installation 3-1 ____________________________________________________________ 3.1 Running the Installation Verification Procedure Separately When you install the software while logged on to a VAXstation, you usually run the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) at installation. If you want to run the IVP separately to ensure the integrity of installed files after system prob- lems occur, log on to a VAXstation and execute the following command procedure: $ @SYS$SYSCOMMON:[SYSTEST]DEEX$IVP.COM If the IVP fails, the system displays error messages as described in Section 3.2. ____________________________________________________________ 3.2 Error Conditions If the installation procedure fails, the software displays a message similar to the following: %VMSINSTAL-E-INSFAIL, The installation of VAX Decision Expert V1.0 has failed. An error during the installation can occur if one or more of the following conditions exists: o The operating system version is incorrect. o The prerequisite software version is incorrect. o The quotas necessary for successful installation are insufficient (see Chapter 2). o The process quotas required by VMSINSTAL are incorrect (see Section 1.6). o The VMS Help library is currently in use. o The product was registered incorrectly or not registered. For descriptions of the error messages generated by these conditions, refer to the VMS System Messages and Recovery Procedures Reference Volume, the installation/operations guide for your processor, or the VMS License Management Utility Manual. 3-2 After the Installation If the system notifies you that any of these conditions exists, you should take appropriate action as described in the message. You may need to change a system parameter or increase an authorized quota value. If the installation fails, you must restart the installation procedure from step 2. If the installation fails due to an IVP failure, and you are installing the product while logged on to a VAXstation, contact a Digital Field Service representative. ____________________________________________________________ 3.3 Maintenance Updates Digital issues periodic maintenance updates of Decision Expert software. Each update consists of an installation kit. Install the kit as described in this document or in the documentation that accompanies the maintenance update. Each time a maintenance update is released, the version number changes. For example, if the current version is V1.0, the version number of the first maintenance update will be V1.1. In addition, the maintenance update includes new release notes. The release notes describe the changes that have been made to Decision Expert since the previous release. The update release notes are provided on line. You should read the release notes before you install the Decision Expert software; they are also accessible at any time after the product is installed. For information on reading the release notes at the time that you install Decision Expert, follow the installation procedure through step 5. To locate the release notes after you have installed the software, display or print the file DEEX$010.RELEASE_NOTES. ____________________________________________________________ 3.4 Determining and Reporting Problems If an error occurs while you are using Decision Expert and you believe that the error is caused by a problem with Decision Expert software, take one of the following actions: o If you purchased Decision Expert within the past 90 days and you think the problem is caused by a software error, submit a Software Performance Report (SPR). After the Installation 3-3 o If you have a BASIC or DECsupport Software Agreement, call your Customer Support Center. With these services, you receive telephone support that provides high-level advisory and remedial assistance. For more information, contact your local Digital representative. o If you have a Self-Maintenance Software Agreement, submit a Software Performance Report (SPR). 3-4 After the Installation Appendix A Sample Installation ________________________________________________________________ This section contains a .LOG file for a sample installation of VAX Decision Expert software.
