The language variants are installed on top of the American English version of VMS DECwindows V2.1. The following language variants are covered by this guide: Dutch French French Canadian German Italian Norwegian Swedish Swiss French Swiss German Swiss Italian v Purpose of This Guide This guide describes how to install the following three products on the VMS operating system: _ VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants _ The German Language Variant of the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" _ The German Language Variant of the CBI "FileView and Its Desktop Applications" You must read the whole guide before you start to install the products. The German Language Variant of the CBI (Computer Based Instruction) "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" and the CBI "Fileview and Its Desktop Applications" are computer- based training programs covering the basic skills needed to work with a DECwindows system. These skills are independent of the specific Language Variant. However, the courses use the terminology appearing in the German and Swiss German Language Variant of VMS DECwindows. Also, the instruction in the courses are in German. The courses are therefore best suited for users working with the VMS DECwindows V2.1 German or Swiss German Language Variant. Who Should Use This Guide This guide is intended for VMS system managers or others who are responsible for installing system software. To install the VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants and the German Variants of the CBIs, you must have access to a privileged account, such as the SYSTEM account. You must also be familiar with the VMS installation procedure, VMSINSTAL. vi Keep this document with your distribution kit. You will need it if for any reason you have to reinstall any of the VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants, the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" or the CBI "FileView and Its Desktop Applications". Structure of This Guide This guide has nine chapters and two appendices. Chapter 1 describes the prerequisites and preparations for the installation of VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants. Chapter 2 describes the installation procedure of VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants. Chapter 3 describes what to do after the installation of VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants. Chapter 4 describes the prerequisites and preparations for the installation of CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems". Chapter 5 describes the installation procedure of CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems". Chapter 6 describes what to do after the installation of CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems". Chapter 7 describes the prerequisites and preparations for the installation of CBI "FileView and Its Desktop Applications". We recommend that you install a DECwindows Language Variant first, followed immediately by the installation of the German Language Variants of the CBIs. However, the installations of the three products are independent of each other. You may want to first install a DECwindows Language Variant only, and postpone the installation of the German Language Variants of the CBIs until later. Your bill of materials (BOM) and indented bills report (BIL) specify the number and contents of your media. Be sure to verify the contents of your kit using this information. If your kit is damaged, or if you find that parts of it are missing, contact your Digital representative. The VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants provide online Release Notes. Digital strongly recommends that you read the Release Notes before proceeding with the installation. For information on accessing the online Release Notes, refer to Accessing the Online Release Notes. You can install VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants on a standalone VAX and on a VAXcluster. Preparing to Install VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants 1-1 Prerequisite Software This section discusses the software you must have installed on your system before you install any VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants. The System Software Addendum (SSA) contains a complete list of prerequisite software and the required version numbers. The SSA is part of the Software Product Description (SPD). You must have VMS V5.4 and the American English version of VMS DECwindows V2.1 installed and running on your system before you install the VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants. Note All VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants run on VMS V5.4 releases only Installation Procedure Requirements The following sections discuss various requirements for installing the VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants. Time The installation takes approximately 10 minutes, depending on your type of media and your system configuration. Privileges To install the VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants, you must be logged in to an account that has SETPRV or at least the following privileges: _ CMKRNL _ WORLD _ SYSPRV Note that VMSINSTAL turns off BYPASS privilege at the start of the installation. 1-2 Preparing to Install VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants Disk Space Installing one of the VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants requires a certain amount of free disk storage space during and after the installation. Use the VMS Authorize Utility to verify and change account quotas. First set your directory to SYS$SYSTEM and then run AUTHORIZE: $ SET DEFAULT SYS$SYSTEM $ RUN AUTHORIZE UAF> At the UAF> prompt, use the SHOW command with an account name to check a particular account. For example: UAF> SHOW SYSTEM To change a quota, use the MODIFY command. MODIFY has the following format: MODIFY account-name /quota-name=NNN 1-4 Preparing to Install VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants The following example changes the FILLM quota for the SYSTEM account and then exits from the utility: UAF> MODIFY SYSTEM /FILLM=30 UAF> EXIT Preparing to Install VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants 1-5 After you exit from the utility, the system displays messages indicating whether or not changes were made. Once the changes have been made, you must log out and log in again for the new quotas to take effect. For more information on modifying account quotas, refer to the description of the Authorize Utility in the VMS System Management Documentation Subkit. If VMSINSTAL detects any problems during the installation, it notifies you and asks if you want to continue the installation. In some instances, you can enter YES to continue. To stop the installation process and correct the situation, enter NO or press . Then correct the problem and restart the installation. Backing Up Your System Disk At the beginning of the installation, VMSINSTAL asks if you have backed up your system disk. Digital recommends that you do a system disk backup before installing any software. Use the backup procedures that are established at your site. For details on performing a system disk backup, refer to the section on the Backup Utility in the VMS System Management Documentation Subkit. VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variant Requirements During the installation of VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants, the product checks that you have VMS V5.4 and the American English version of VMS DECwindows V2.1 installed and running on your system. If you do not have VMS V5.4 and VMS DECwindows V2.1, an error message will be displayed and the installation procedure will abort. The product also checks that you have sufficient disk space available for the installation. The disk space for each language variant is listed in Table 1-1. If you do not have enough disk space, an error message will be displayed and the installation procedure will abort. 1-6 Preparing to Install VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants 2 ________________________________________________________________ Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants This chapter describes how to install VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants. The Installation Procedure contains a step-by-step descrip- tion of the installation procedure. General Information This section includes information about the following topics: _ Accessing online Release Notes. _ Determining which files have been added to your system _ Aborting the installation. Accessing the Online Release Notes The VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants provide online Release Notes. You must specify OPTIONS N when you invoke VMSINSTAL to see the question about online Release Notes. This question comes near the beginning of the installation. This is described in Invoking VMSINSTAL. You must review the Release Notes in case they contain any information about last minute changes in the installation procedure. If you have already reviewed the Release Notes during a previous installation, you do not need to specify OPTIONS N. Once the language variant has been installed, the Release Notes are located in the directory SYS$HELP: in one of the files listed in Table 2-1. These directories and files are listed in Appendix B. Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) The installation procedure for the VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants does not include an Installation Verification Procedure (IVP). This is because the VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants consist only of the user interface, online help and online documentation. As there is no IVP, Digital recommends that you check after the installation that the files have been installed correctly and that the language variant runs correctly. Refer to Checking the Installation and Invoking and Running a Language Variant for more information. 2-2 Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants Aborting the Installation To abort the installation procedure at any time, press CTRL/Y. When you press CTRL/Y, the installation procedure deletes all files it has created up to that point and exits. You can then start the installation again. The Installation Procedure The installation procedure consists of a series of questions and informational messages. Invoking VMSINSTAL To start the installation, invoke the VMSINSTAL command procedure from a privileged account, such as the SYSTEM account. VMSINSTAL is in the SYS$UPDATE directory. You use the following syntax to invoke VMSINSTAL: @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL saveset-name device-name OPTIONS N saveset-name The installation name for the component. For the VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants, use the installation names shown in Table 2-2. For example, MTA0: is a device name for a tape drive. It is not necessary to use the console drive for this installation. However, if you do use the console drive, once the installation is complete, you should replace any media you removed. OPTIONS N An optional parameter that indicates you want to see the Release Notes question. If you do not include the OPTIONS N parameter, VMSINSTAL does not ask you about the Release Notes. You must review the Release Notes before proceeding with the installation in case they contain new information about the installation. Note that there are several other options you can select when you invoke VMSINSTAL. Refer to the VMS documentation on software installation in the VMS System Management Subkit for information on these options. If you specify more than one option, separate the options with commas, for example, OPTIONS A,N. The following example invokes VMSINSTAL to install the Dutch VMS DECwindows language variant from tape drive MTA0: and shows the system response. 2-4 Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL DECWNL_NL021 MTA0: OPTIONS N VAX/VMS Software Product Installation Procedure V5.4 It is 16-SEP-1991 at 11:44. Enter a question mark (?) at any time for help. If you do not supply either the product name or the device name, VMSINSTAL prompts you for this information later in the installation procedure. If you do not specify any installation options, VMSINSTAL also prompts you to enter options. Installation Questions This section discusses the questions that appear during the installation. Appendix A contains a sample installation procedure which shows how the questions can be answered. Each question in the installation is marked with an asterisk (*) at the beginning of the line. Some questions show the default response in brackets, for example [YES] or [Y]. To use the default response, press . 1 System backup VMSINSTAL asks if you are satisfied with your system backup. You should always back up your system disk before performing an installation. If you are satisfied with the backup of your system disk, press . Otherwise, enter NO to discontinue the installation. After you back up your system disk, you can restart the installation. * Are you satisfied with the backup of your system disk [YES]? 2 Options If you did not specify any options on the command line, VMSINSTAL asks you to enter the installation options you want to use. Press if you do not want any options. * Enter installation options you wish to use (none): Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants 2-5 3 Mounting the media You must now mount the first distribution volume on the device you specified when you invoked VMSINSTAL. The device name appears in the line preceding the question. VMSINSTAL then asks you if you are ready to continue with the installation. If you respond YES, to indicate that you are ready, VMSINSTAL displays a message that the media containing the language variant has been mounted on the specified device and that the installation has begun. For example: Please mount the first volume of the set on MTA0:. * Are you ready? YES %MOUNT-I-MOUNTED, DECWNL_NL021 MOUNTED ON _$$MTA0: The following products will be processed: DECWNL_NL V2.1 Beginning installation of DECWNL_NL V2.1 at 11:45 %VMSINSTAL-I-RESTORE, Restoring product saveset A... If you entered the wrong device name when you invoked VMSINSTAL and need to restart the installation, enter NO in response to the "Are you ready?" question. To abort the installation for other reasons, press CTRL/Y. 4 Release Notes If you specified OPTIONS N when you invoked VMSINSTAL or when VMSINSTAL prompted you to enter an option, you are now asked to choose one of the four options for reviewing the Release Notes. Release notes included with this kit are always copied to SYS$HELP. Additional Release Notes Options: 1. Display release notes 2. Print release notes 3. Both 1 and 2 4. None of the above * Select option [2]: 2-6 Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants If you select option 1, VMSINSTAL displays the Release Notes immediately on the console terminal. You can terminate the display at any time by pressing CTRL/C. If you select option 2, VMSINSTAL prompts you for the name of the print queue that you want to use: * Queue name [SYS$PRINT]: You can press to send the file to the default output print device or you can enter another queue name. If you select option 3, VMSINSTAL displays the Release Notes immediately on the console terminal and then prompts you for a queue name for the printed version. Select option 4 if you have already reviewed the Release Notes and are restarting the installation. 5 Continuing the installation The installation procedure now asks if you want to continue the installation. To continue, enter YES. Otherwise, press . In either case, the Release Notes are copied to a file in the SYS$HELP directory. For example: * Do you want to continue the installation [NO]?: YES %VMSINSTAL-I-RELMOVED, The product's release notes have- _been successfully moved to SYS$HELP. %DECWNL_NL-I-INTRO, Installing VMS DECwindows Dutch- _language support. The Release Notes for each language variant are located in one of the files listed in Table 2-1 in Accessing the Online Release Notes. 6 Choosing to purge files You have the option to purge files from any previous versions of VMS DECwindows Language Variants that are superseded by this installation. Purging is recommended; however, if you need to keep files from the previous version, enter NO in response to the question. * Do you want to purge files replaced by this installation [YES]? Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants 2-7 Informational Messages At this point, the installation procedure displays a number of informational messages that report on the progress of the installation. The installation procedure does not ask any further questions. If the installation procedure has been successful up to this point, VMSINSTAL moves the new or modified files to their target directories, updates help files, and updates DCL tables, if necessary. Therefore, if you are going to continue using the system manager's account and you want to restore these symbols, you must log out and log in again. Error Recovery If errors occur during the installation, VMSINSTAL displays failure messages. If the installation fails, you see the following message: %VMSINSTAL-E-INSFAIL, The installation of DECWNL_NL V2.1- _has failed. Errors can occur during the installation if any of the following conditions exist: _ The operating system version is incorrect _ Disk space necessary for successful installation is insufficient _ Quotas necessary for successful installation are insufficient _ System parameter values for successful installation are insufficient _ The VMS help library is currently in use For descriptions of the error messages generated by these conditions, refer to the VMS documentation on system messages, recovery procedures, and VMS software installation. If you are notified that any of these conditions exist, you should take the appropriate action as described in the message. (You might need to change a system parameter or increase an authorized quota value.) For information on installation requirements, refer to Chapter 1. 2-10 Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants 3 ________________________________________________________________ After Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants After installing a language variant, you must perform the following tasks: _ Edit the system startup file _ Amend the LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF file _ Check the installation _ Run the language variant Editing the System Startup File You must edit the system startup file to provide for automatic startup of VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants when your system is rebooted. Add the command line that starts the language variant to the system startup file, SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM. The VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants cannot start until after the network has started. You must put this new command line after the line that invokes the network startup command procedure. This does not apply to the Norwegian language variant, which has no translated online documentation. To include the reference to Using the Bookreader in the file LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF, follow these instructions: Use the DCL APPEND command to append the file which contains the reference to the appropriate language version of Using the Bookreader to the file LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF. For more information about the APPEND command, refer to the VMS DCL Dictionary. Table 3-2 lists the file for each language variant which contains the reference to Using the Bookreader. The files are listed in Files. If all the files are in the correct directories, invoke and run the language variant according to the instructions in Invoking and Running a Language Variant. If all the files listed in Files are not installed, or if your language variant does not run correctly, report this to Digital. Refer to Determining and Reporting Problems for more information. Invoking and Running a Language Variant If you did not specify a system-wide default language variant (parameter2) on the startup command line in the file SYS$MANAGER:SYSTARTUP_V5.COM, you must tell all users how to start up the language variant which you have installed. Refer to Editing the System Startup File for more information on the startup command line. To start up the language variant, each user must do the following: 1 Choose Language... from the Session Manager's Customize menu. The Session Manager displays the Customize Language dialog box. 2 Scroll through the list of languages and choose the language which corresponds to the language variant installed. 3-4 After Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants The next application which the user starts is displayed in the selected language. If the application is not available on your system in the selected language, it is displayed in American English. 3 Choose Save Current Settings from the Session Manager's Customize menu. When the user starts a new DECwindows session, the DECwindows environment will appear in the selected language. Determining and Reporting Problems If you encounter a problem while using VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants, report it to Digital. Depending on the nature of the problem and the type of support you have, you can take one of the following actions: _ Call Digital if your software contract or warranty agreement entitles you to telephone support. _ Submit a Software Performance Report (SPR). _ Fill out and submit a Reader's Comments form if the prob- lem has to do with the VMS DECwindows V2.1 documentation. There are Reader's Comments forms at the back of each manual. Use the form from the manual in which you found the error. Include the section and page number. Review the Software Product Description (SPD) and Warranty Addendum for an explanation of warranty. If you encounter a problem during the warranty period, report the problem as indicated above or follow alternate instructions provided by Digital for reporting SPD nonconformance problems. After Installing VMS DECwindows V2.1 Language Variants 3-5 4 ________________________________________________________________ Preparing to Install the German Language Variant of the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" Before installing the German language variant of the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" make sure that your system has the hardware and software configuration required to run the course, and that the complete installation kit for the course is available. Hardware Requirements The German language variant of the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" can be installed on any VAX system. However, the course can only be run from a VAX system that supports the DECwindows graphics interface. The course runs on both monochrome and color systems. Color support is not required. To install the course, the system must have at least 2000 blocks of free disk space. Although the course can run on a system with 6 MB of memory, the system should have at least 9 MB of memory for good performance. The system on which the course runs may be a standalone system or a member of a VAXcluster configuration. Users are expected to use a standard three-button mouse. Users who are using a graphics tablet should understand the difference between a relative pointing device, such as a mouse, and an absolute pointing device, such as the puck or stylus used with graphics tablets. CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" 4-1 Software Requirements To run the course, the VMS Version 5.4 operating system must be installed and running properly on your system. The course uses the following components of the DECwindows software, which are installed as a part of the VMS Version 5.4 operating system: _ Session Manager _ Window Manager _ DECterm Terminal Emulator _ FileView _ Notepad _ Clock Since the instruction in the CBI uses the terminology of the German Language Variant of DECwindows, it is best if this Variant is also installed on the system. However, this is not a prerequisite for either installing or running the CBI. 4-2 CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" 5 ________________________________________________________________ Installing the German Language Variant of the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" To install the German language variant of the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" you must log in to a privileged account. The account must have at least the following privileges: _ SYSPRV _ SYSNAM _ TMPMBX _ NETMBX The SYSTEM account satisfies this requirement. Running the Installation Procedure After you have logged in to a privileged account you can run the course installation procedure. This procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes and performs the following operations: _ Installs the course files on a specified disk. Caution If a version of the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" has been installed on the specified disk already (for example the English Language Variant) the previous version will be replaced by the new installation. If you want to keep the previous version of the CBI, you should specify a different disk. CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" 5-1 _ Presents the option of adding an item that starts the course to the FileView Applications menu. Doing this enables users to start the course easily by choosing that item from the menu. _ Defines the following logical names which are required to run the course: DECW$CBI DECW$CBI_SUPPORT If the course is being installed on a VAXcluster configuration, the installation procedure presents the option of automatically defining those logical names on all members of the cluster. Note If a version of the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" had already been installed, and you did not replace it by the new installation, you will have to redefine these logical names to their original values in order to access the previous version of the CBI. Use the following steps to install the German language variant of the CBI "Introduction to DECwindows Systems" software: 1 Use the SHOW DEVICE command to check the system disk space. Read the resulting display to make sure there are at least 2000 blocks free on the system disk. (If you plan to install the course on a different disk, execute the same command using that device name to ensure that this disk has the necessary 2000 blocks free.) $ SHOW DEVICE SYS$SYSDEVICE 2 Invoke the VMSINSTAL command procedure. Use DECWCBIDE_ DE021 as the name of the product, and specify the device from which you are installing the course.
